Nothing like the smell of rotting ape corpse in the morning

Who: Newt and Everyone Who Either Commented or Is Listed in This Post
What: Searching that Monkey Compound
When: 10/7
Where: Everyone's on a D8
Warnings: Rotting monkey corpses? IDK, tag ur stuff, friendos

"Picking over the remnants of that bloody battle will prove quite advantageous, as long as you don't mind the smell. Not only did the monkeys fashion several abodes mounted in the branches of the trees in the compound, but they had quite a supply of various items on hand. For those who may have been concerned about islet over-crowding, it seems they need not worry; most of the homes remain undamaged, and aside from the strong smell of monkey, are completely habitable."

"Investigating the back of the compound will reveal a very small plot of farmland, where several rows of plants with dark green leaves can be seen growing. Anyone with a knack for identifying useful plants - or anyone who's simply willing to take one for the team and give them a taste - will soon discover that these leaves are the plants from which the monkeys drew their sedative. It makes quite a useful anesthetic in a pinch!"

"The sigil etched deeply onto the door itself will, as the Storyteller warned, be quite effective in keeping people out. The door repels any and all efforts to break through it; those sensitive to magic may note that it does indeed exude a very powerful and dense aura that makes its origins difficult to discern. One thing is clear, however: it will take a great deal more than teamwork between mortals to get through it." ( x )

[Welcome to the Mingle Log, Fam. Around you are the rotting corpses of many dead apes. There's also many items for you to lay claim to. Or you might feel like checking out those sweet sweet monkey nests. Or checking out that door. Whatever you feel like doing, leave a top level for people to pester you with. Or pester other people with top levels. The Mingle Log is your Oyster.]

[Gobbet smiles as she catches sight of the cowboy. There's a joke to be made about "man of her dreams" but she's not gonna make it. Not out loud, anyway. In one hand, she clutches a pilfered spear. In the other she cradles a couple of coconuts against her arm. She picks her way towards him across the field of dead bodies, seemingly unmoved by the rancid smell or grisly sights.]

Hey, it's the space cowboy! Glad to see you made it from dreamland to dry land without being boiled alive. Remember me?

Since when was I from space?

[But he's amused. He's been wondering about the girl he met, the one he could sort of remember. He'd been quick to chalk it all up as something he'd never understand, something that'd never come up again.

But there she is.]

An' I remember you tryin' to take somethin' o' mine you got from a crafty little fella before we made peace.

Aw, come on, I gave it back. That's gotta count for something, right? [A lazy grin plays on her lips as she comes to a stop a few feet away.] And I assumed you were from space since nobody on Earth dresses like that anymore. Clearly you're a man from Mars.

[She'd met some pretty crazy types, but a cowboy was so old-fashioned and mundane as a concept that it seemed three times as crazy as anything else.]

Counts for more than nothin', I reckon. [He shakes his head, snorting.] An' I'm afraid I'm just from plain ol' Earth. We haven't quite gotten 'round to puttin' colonies up on other planets yet.

[Horizon getting completely fucked by monkeys kind of put the kibosh on that.]

Well then, what brings you back to this beautiful, scenic site?

[Gobbet toes a corpse as she says this, voice thick with sarcasm. It probably wasn't exactly the same reason as her. It was probably looting. But it was rude to assume, so she asks anyway.]

Partner a mine wanted to scope things out, get a better lay of the land.

[And also find something, anything, useful. McCree eye the corpse Gobbet pokes out, leaning heavily against his pilfered spear.]

's not everyday you wake up about to be some ape's dinner, so there's probably a whole lotta shit we missed out on that'd be good to know.

I get it.

[She'd spent the past few days getting the lay of the land and making preparations. Now that a few days had passed, she wasn't surprised others were trickling back in to pick up the pieces too.]

Find anything useful yet?

Got a stick.

[It's a very useful stick. Pointy.]

Doesn't seem like there's much else here unless you're ready for a whole lotta commitment and callouses.

[Which is more of a general statement than anything else - this whole archipelago, while filled with strange things McCree's never seen, doesn't have much going for it. Dilapidated buildings, bizarre temples, stranger wildlife.

There are hints of there being something More, but there's not much of that more that McCree can find.]

Aw, I don't think you're looking hard enough, Cowboy! There's those weird plants out behind that weird temple, those could be good for something. These nests are full of fruit. There's timber, rope, weapons to be reclaimed - even housing options for those of us who prefer to live in style rather than stone shacks.

[She punches his shoulder playfully as if they've been friends for years.]

Shit, I even found you in the rubble, didn't I? There's plenty here.

[personal profile] jinglejangle 2017-10-20 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, stone shacks are plenty stylish. Just a different sort of style, y'know. [There's a pause, as he makes a note to go grab some of the fruit she mentioned.] Plus I don't reckon I'd want to share that place with anyone else.

[A shack he could share, though. Sure, he could live on his own but...

He's lucky enough to have his family here. He's not about to let them go.]

You don't gotta flatter lil ol' me, but I appreciate that you think I've got something to provide the masses.

[He laughs, with a fond shake of his head.]

It's not flattery if it's true. What's more useful than a gun and southern charm?

[If you can't shoot the shit with it, shoot it. It's the perfect solution to any problem.]

I, for one, am looking forward to exploring this whole island. It's kinda like a tropical vacation, you know?
jinglejangle: (pic#11795109)

[personal profile] jinglejangle 2017-10-25 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Place like this? Probably more wilderness knowhow than I'm equipped with.

[Shooting the problem until it's dead doesn't exactly worth when some of the dangers are environmental. You can't shoot plants to life.]

A vacation that's leanin' heavily on thrillseekin' activities, but if that's what you're into I can't judge.

[Not with that attitude.]

[Gobbet waves a hand dismissively and yawns.]

I come from a city of rain, grime, and crime. Tropical islands with murderous monkeys are a nice change of pace. As for wilderness survival, it can't be that hard, right? Just don't die. Food and water, heat and shelter, et cetera, et cetera. You'll figure it out. Plus, I can give you some tips once I've got my footing.

[personal profile] jinglejangle 2017-11-03 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Rain, grime, and grime mean I'm not sure you really know what you're gettin' in for.

[Though it does give her a leg up on people who came from cushier backgrounds...for some things.

Maybe not so much like agriculture, though that's where McCree knows he's going to struggle.]

Don't reckon this place is gonna make gettin' any of that easy, but there's damn sure a lot of folks who seem to be tryin' to make the best of it.

[personal profile] ratsinadaze 2017-11-04 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Boy, you fuss too much. I never said that would make any of this easier, just that it makes it seem nicer. I've been surviving all my life, it's about time I get to do it on a tropical island rather than a semi-abandoned boat in a crime lord's backyard.

[Gobbet eyes McCree critically, a modicum of seriousness on her usually carefree face.]

You seem like you could have made it in my world, you know. Might have been a decent street sam. If I'm right about you, you'll figure things out for yourself.
jinglejangle: (pic#11795099)

[personal profile] jinglejangle 2017-11-08 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Never thought anyone'd be tellin' me that I'm the one kickin' up too much of a fuss.

[He laughs, but he does understand Gobbet's sentiment. Sometimes life can't always be about upgrades, trading something worse for what's better.

His grin goes a little crooked.]

I might could've - can't say I know much about life on the streets, but I know a bit about gettin' into tussles where I reasonably shouldn't be tusslin'.

[It's not- not entirely a lie. Deadlock didn't do much on the "streets", Blackwatch you could pretend was always on the up and up. Still nothing a kid should've dealt with, probably. Still wasn't pretty.]
ratsinadaze: (Smile)

[personal profile] ratsinadaze 2017-11-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
You don't need to know about 'street life' to be a street sam. 'Street sam' is short for 'street samurai'. They're kind of like bounty hunters or mercenaries with their own codes of honor. They're generally really good with one type of weapon. Like a pistol, or a sword.

[Gobbet explains, thinking primarily of Gaichu - who was a real samurai. She doesn't know a whole lot about McCree, just what can be gleaned from his aesthetic and general demeanor, but she thinks that if things were different, they could have run together. Running the shadows was all about doing what needed to be done, filling a complex and critical role in society that went largely unnoticed.]

[Hell, depending on what the island was like in the long run and what needed to be done, maybe they'd run the shadows together anyway.]
