The Beach: For All the Rest
The shores of Ensō are far from the tranquil, almost idyllic tropical backdrop that they should be. And so it is that while you fish, or perhaps as you go about your daily business on the islets, the first thing you will note is the persistent sound hammering at the back of your skull.
A drumming.
And it's growing louder.
The source of the drumming will, like it or not, soon become apparent. At the fringes of the trees, wielding slings and hollow, wooden pistols, is a group of large and very displeased simians who have every intent of claiming this spot of beach - yes, traveler, this spot of beach you're standing on right now! - for their own, and by any means necessary.
And they certainly don't look interested in diplomacy.

If you came armed, you might be in luck, because this conflict will require your steady hand in its resolution. If you did not...well, you may be better suited to run, or risk capture at the hands of warriors skilled, cunning, and incredibly vicious. Laugh at their monkey business all you like; they are ingenious fighters and, what's more, they're just as good at killing as they are at capture.
For the uninitiated, this particular brand of chaos doesn't usually sweep across the entire island the way it has. But those who have been here for some time will recognize the monkeys in question, and might even recognize this for what it is: revenge.
Group I: The Squeakquel
Looks like your monkeying around last month has landed you and everyone else in a spot of trouble. The monkeys in question certainly weren't happy to be confronted with others on their lands, nor are they willing to share their territory. While you may have triumphed last time you confronted them, the apes have been planning their revenge in the meantime.
Some of you were unlucky enough to become targets. Overnight, a great deal of them silently invaded the islets. Their blow-dart guns are equipped with a fairly powerful sedative that is more than capable of knocking most living creatures out - and those that were immune were simply snatched up, gagged, and bundled away.
However, it seems that some of their prisoners didn't suit their purposes, for one way or another, and thus weren't retrieved with the intention of long-term capture. Which is why a number of you will awaken in regions of the island that you've already explored.
...the really, really dangerous ones.
Whether it's a Center of Gravity, a parade of centipuppies, a contingent of Lungblossoms, a Fustercluck, or something else entirely, one thing is certain: the monkeys wanted you out of their way.
So get ready to fight for your life.

Group II: Ape Escape
If you're not one of the slightly luckier newcomers that materializes on the shore, then you're one of the unlucky ones that's managed to materialize square in the middle of the jungle. Or rather, in the middle of one of the denser, more populated parts of the jungle. The abodes woven into the canopy are crude, built of mud and sticks, but they're nonetheless sturdy.
And, as an important note - they are also swarming with monkeys. Snarling, baying, armed monkeys. Perhaps they'd be more hostile toward an interloper...if you weren't already in a cage, along with several others.

Fortunately for the newbies, they've all got something the monkeys didn't anticipate, aside from the element of surprise. Most prisoners don't arrive with knapsacks full of newly-acquired gear, and it's a good thing, too - you may very well need it, and the help of the new arrivals, to escape this place. You could always wait for the cavalry to come, but are you really willing to take that risk?
Group III: Pot Luck
As for you, you terribly fortunate third group?
You'll find yourselves suspended in wooden cages as well, though this time, to the hot curtain of whitish steam clouding your vision. It smells an awful lot like smoke down there. An awful lot like something...burning? Unlike your fellows over in the second group, these cages aren't simply a means of containing you, no. These cages are currently hanging over what might be the largest cast iron cauldron you've ever seen. All of this is, of course, for one simple reason:
Some species of monkeys are carnivores.

As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.
All new arrivals will awake with knapsacks with their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can be found below!
Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

Muffet | OTA | Anybody want a rescue? :D
[But she is approaching the apes' base camp with a line of purple magic already in her hands and a distinctly displeased expression on her face.]
[You have something of hers, apes. She'd like them back.]

[Roy looks like he's been fighting off the entire ape army single-handed.]
[This is not far from the truth. He has, in fact, been using both hands. Because his greatsword is a two-handed weapon. But without time to recover his armor, Roy is practically a solid mass of contusion, laceration, injury, and blood.]
[This doesn't actually seem to be slowing him down in the slightest.]
I have to say, if you could web up some of their towers, I would be very appreciative for a respite from the gun attacks. My current plan is just to run them out of ammo, and I have to say it's not my favorite plan of every one I've ever concocted.

Ardyn Izunia | ota | ffxv spoilers (i'm so sorry for him)
[The dagger wouldn't be efficient enough; it bothered him to utilize his true powers so openly, but the secret was more or less out by now. So he held a five-foot long greatsword in one hand, and swung it as though it weighed nothing at whatever threat dared come within range as he casually made his way the hell out of here in long, cavalier strides.]
[Saving people had long since stopped being something he was interested in. The others could handle themselves, it was hardly his problem.]
why are you like this
She nearly gets beheaded. Which is incredibly irritating, and Mira lets out a wordless yell when she sees the sword come way too close to her head. Considering how short she is, and how tall he is and the way he's swinging it around, it's not that surprising. Still... as a warning, she raises her hand and swings it in an arc, leaving shards of ice in its wake. ]
Do you always swinging your sword around without a care as to who it might hit?
[ Any bite that might have been behind the words is gone; she's tired, after using so much magic, and that's frustrating. What good is her magic if she's more and more exhausted with each use...? ]

[Says the fighter with a longer greatsword but one he is properly wielding in two hands as he dashes -- yes, back into the fray, despite being covered in bruises, lacerations, and blood that all speak of some serious fighting up till this point.]

In fact, here's someone wielding one dagger in each hand. A boy that is suddenly just there, barely keeping out of range of the sword. He actually is here for heroics, deliberately taking himself to wherever there are people.
And there are people around here. Not all of them are as fast as he is. Some might not watch out.]
You should be more careful with that.

So when she rises from someone else's aid, turning to see the Chancellor swinging a royal arm like it's nothing, the shock of recognition ebbs not into weakness, but strength. She stands her ground, trident in hand, and waits for her murderer to notice her.]

Never be sorry
The hand clutching the white and gold sword remains steady, as heedless of the weight as Ardyn is of his own weapon. The wielder is a tall, slim boy, paler than the Glacian but for eyes that burn as scarlet as Ifrit's darkest flames. Those eyes watch Ardyn closely, too keenly intelligent and far too old for such a youthful, androgynously beautiful face.]
I'm not a threat.
[Maybe not to Ardyn or anyone else but a homicidal monkey, but if the Chancellor can sense power he'll find it in spades in this boy. Dark, seething, nearly as virulent as Starscourge in its hatred. Yet the youth is outwardly calm, not betraying even a hint of the endless, wordless scream inside him.]

8) here we go
So the child who joins him, this fine day, appears to be in good spirits. No winded, nor injured, even if their clothes and skin are liberally spattered with blood. It's a particularly unpleasant smile on their face, right now- superimposed over their features, like their lips have been painted on.
They say hi by ramming a flaming knife into the back of the simian facing Ardyn. Call it luck, or actual intent- but with it's spine severed, the creature crumples all too quickly, yelping more out of surprise than any pain.
Looks like that issue isn't registering to it, anymore.]
It's rude to steal all the fun for yourself, sir.

Pharah (and Shepard) | Both prompts near the Pot Luck for now
The cage itself didn't prove too much trouble, not once Pharah had found the multitool in her sachel. The companion that she rescued was a little more resistant than she would have liked, though, so she's more than happy to put him down once they're on solid ground.
Her suit, on the other hand...
That had nearly given her a heart attack. There was something wrong with the hover function, and she was going to have to check that later when she had a moment. For now, she would just have to do without. Adrenaline is still pumping through her veins from that near-dunk into the boiling water, but she's feeling pretty fine on the whole.
Better than fine, really. Where she is and how she got here is still a mystery to her, but those are questions for later. Right now, there's a sachel tied at her waist, and a rocket launcher in her hands; and she's focused on the moment. There are two primary objectives: Release the remaining prisoners from their cages, and fend off the primates until they can break through their ranks. Clearly the other prisoners are her priority, but a rescue mission is no good if she's going to get shot in the back in the process.
[B: Holding Out For A Hero, OTA]
With her and Shepard working together and providing cover for each other, they're able to cobble together some rescue attempts for the people still left in their cages. There's not a whole lot of time left, though. Those people need to be freed now.
[Feel free to tag in here if you want a rescue from Group 3!]

Roy | OTA | Get rescued or say hello, either or
[Actually, it is not an exaggeration to say Roy has taken on a dinosaur-mounted army and won. Now to be fair, he had help with that and their victory was in fact killing most of the army and escaping from much higher-level characters, but that totally counts (and can be read in Blood Run In The Family, available online or from your local comic book store.)]
[...Look, Roy is wearing this shirt. That's a real thing. If you can tell where the hell the fourth wall is any more, you're a better man than he is --]
[ANYWAY THE POINT IS: Roy stalks through the ape encampment with his sword in his hands and blood, most of it his, practically streaming off his body from a plethora of wounds, contusions, abrasions, lacerations, and general hit point damage that will probably get him a lecture from Mercy like none the world has seen before or since. This dire threat does not stop him, though; so long as people are in danger and he has a reasonable amount of strength left, he is going to fight to save them.]
[Help him or get out of his way. Or get helped by him. Or argue with him about his life choices. He'd really prefer the first or the third, but he doesn't control you.]

tim wright | ota for YET MORE RESCUIN
[A lighter, a flip-knife, a hatchet, and a jar of fire-starting beads. It's not much. It'll have to do.]
[The door to the compound is just as impenetrable as it was before, but this time he's got something on his side.]
[He's got a fucking axe.]
[He's not superpowered like most people here; he hasn't got magic, or LOVE, or a fistful of enchanted knives. He can't abuse time until it warps into a localized circle. He doesn't have pokemon at his disposal, and he can't throw fire, and he isn't even a fucking doctor.]
[But he has a fucking axe. He has a lick of someone else's old determination guttering in his chest - humming, perhaps, with the phantom sensation of ice-cold water soaking his jeans to his legs as a cage suspended on a salt-stained iron chain clanked and clattered and lowered them ever closer to the end.]
[He sets to work at the very edge of the compound - hacking at the dense vegetation with his face drawn into a cold, unyielding scowl. If he can penetrate the monkeys' makeshift palisade, then he can finally get inside - and get everyone out.]

mira | ota | here for your healing needs....... maybe
[ As much as she really would love to go somewhere absolutely safe, there's one thing on her mind. If she's in this situation, it stands to reason that there are others in as much trouble. There's no guarantee that they'll have someone to help them out, and she's not a fighter, but what she can do is heal.
So. If she sees someone's hurt, she'll go on over to them. ]
Do you need healing?

Ouse | OTA | idk sometime after cage escape
Despite a few dirt smudges, Ouse manages to stick out by still being in a more-or-less pristine white wedding kimono, her knapsack clutched tightly to her as she tries to avoid the main conflicts, knowing she'd be useless without access to a steadier water source. But her knife is clutched in her hand still anyhow, just in case.
It's hard to be inconspicuous in all-white, however, and it isn't long before a monkey catches up to her. She can only move with rather slow, deliberate steps so it's not too surprising either, but as she turns to face the monkey she lifts her hood just a little...
For a moment, her appearance wavers and changes; this particular monkey seems at least smart enough to not want to fuck with whatever that is and quickly hightails it out of there in search of less pants-shittingly terrifying prey. The entire effect lasts only a second or two, a blink of an eye, before she's back to her more human appearance and she heaves a deep sigh, lifting her head to survey the area again.
Despite the violence, she seems hardly moved by it. Honestly, she's seen a lot worse and a lot gorier things and she's rather emotionally exhausted from how weird this whole sequence of events has been.
Ouse turns and begins to walk away again, but winces as her bare feet tread on broken pieces of wood and debris, forcing her to pause again and look down in dismay]
...Perhaps I will need to be carried a little further... [Dammit.]

Jesse McCree | OTA | post-cage escape
Everything's coming up Jesse.
Yes, he's still very much in danger and there are monkeys everywhere that are very much not like the mild-mannered gorilla he's come to know, but he has his gun and a brand new knife so the odds are in his favor. He keeps his gun holstered for now - ammo preservation has been something drilled into his head many times over by Commander Reyes and Captain Amari both. Don't take shots you don't need to, or you'll just get bitten in the ass when someone you don't know is there gets the drop on you.
Maybe not advice that's strictly applicable to this scenario, but it's something he repeats as he cuts his way through. There has to be an end to this - either to the monkey's numbers or there's somewhere safe from them.]
Ah, hell.
[It would be easier to just try to make his way on his own, but that's not something that sits well on him. So every person he passes is greeted with a short, sharp gesture or a touch on the arm or soldier and the same question.]

The Batter | OTA | Sometime after cage escape
But there's no time to dwell on the hows and whys of that when there's nothing but chaos around him. Being unarmed in such a situation was also worrisome, but the Batter was nothing if not practical and the dead creatures had no need for their weapons. A spear is better than nothing even if the Batter was not experienced in using one. All he had to do was hope it didn't break as he dives back into the fray.
The Batter is not going to go out of his way to save people - the apes have done enough to prove they are hostile and in need of eradication, which has become his priority. But if someone gets his attention then he will follow. Or maybe they can lend a hand to destroy the monkeys attempting to kill him. The Batter wouldn't complain.
Strangely enough, however, the apes seems to be taking a rather cautious approach to the man. They're attempting to kill him like anyone else, but they're also circling the purifier when they can. Like watching a wounded animal that could still kill you if you are not careful.
Maybe they see something that nobody else yet has. But it doesn't matter to the Batter one bit. The creatures needed to be destroyed, one way or another.]

Pharah | OTA (Any group)
Once the immediate danger of boiling alive has been dealt with for her and her various companions, the next leg of this impromptu mission is getting the hell out of dodge. Several people have already made a break for it, but it's definitely possible that there's still stragglers--or others that she hadn't seen by the boiling pot.
It might be prudent to leave as soon as possible, but there's no chance in hell that she's leaving anyone behind. So as people flee the apes, she's ushering them along and providing cover as best she can, her armor bright blue against the green canopy of jungle around them. If she finds anyone cornered or in trouble, she's more than willing to dive into the fray. Or grab them and jet into the air, if needed.
[B: A Walk in the Wild Wild Park]
Outside of the monkey compound, Pharah finally gets a chance to catch her breath. It doesn't seem quite as chaotic out here, so even if she's alone for the moment, she's not that worried. She has a bearing: head northeast, find a mana pool. It's one of those things... She'll know it when she sees it. Probably.
If she happens to cross paths with anyone, there's no harm in asking them to come along. But it would be a lie to say that she's not still tense and on guard. Here's hoping she doesn't mistake anyone for a hostile in the jungle foliage. Or else, they might find themselves looking down the barrel of a rocket launcher.
B!

a wildcard for ardyn | closed
Except Maribelle has had enough action for a day. Instead he ends up lounging around, while the horse pecks at flora along the shoreline. He could stay out all night with a book, but he doesn't even have that at hand- a small consolation, at least, is that he spots one of the few people he's willing to initiate conversation with.
So he's going to just. Stroll over, sitting down should Ardyn be doing so. The guy doing whatever the fuck out in the open means he's fair game. Laurent has no doubt Ardyn associates him with the enemy; he's been seen around them enough. But Laurent is also fairly sure Ardyn is smarter than to start a fight and give the Chocobros (more) moral high ground.]
I see the apes treated you well.

COMING OUT OF MY CAGE AND I'VE BEEN DOING JUST it's ota i;m very sorry
[ Unlike something resembling a reasonable person, Karin doesn't stick with her two fellow prisoners once they burst out of the cage. No, instead she decides she's going to do what she does best -- throw herself into the thick of things with a sword swinging. She'd prefer two but after blasting out of their prison she's found she can only keep one around.
Alright. That's fine. She can handle just one.
Maybe you're in trouble and she comes to help you out, maybe she's just getting in your way while you're trying to get the hell out but she's hard to miss -- there's a ridiculously dressed middle schooler with a goddamn katana causing a ruckus and you might just find yourself getting caught up in it. Rest in pieces. ]
baby naps
[ Much, much later, once Karin's found herself to some sort of relative safety, you might spot her huddled up somewhere looking considerably more average than she did before. She's plopped herself down on the floor, knees pulled up to her chest and her face mushed into her knapsack. Going by the slow, even rise and fall of her shoulders it looks like she's up and conked out. But if you approach her (intentionally or just get a bit too close in passing), she jerks awake with a huge wheezy inhale and her eyes wide if a bit unfocused. ]
Wh-- s'there more monkeys? I don't--
[ She starts looking around, blinking rapidly and just all around looking like an idiot who desperately needs to be put down for a real-ass nap. Rest in pieces, Karin Miyoshi. ]

Soma Cruz | OTA | Late arrival spoilers for Aria of Sorrow?
And there's no hiding what he is while he's caught up in a fight: his eyes glow crimson and his fangs are on full display. Anyone he saves is likely to flee from him, right?]
