May Adventure: I Want to Go Where Everyone Goes

Things Are Shaping Up to Be Pretty Odd
As of May 10th, the mana pools on Ensō and its islets will now allow for travel to Io. Though you could always opt for sailing, if you wanted. As we mentioned on the island's introductory post, no exploration is necessary! The island is small enough and easily traversed, and with a minimum of dangers, you have plenty of time to visit each of Io's six draws.

The temple is the easiest place to get in touch with the local avatar, though you can contact them just as easily by striking up a conversation with just about any honeybee you see in the vicinity. The lazy drone of them can be heard all over the island, though they're quite complacent, and not at all prone to disturbing adventurers. The temple itself is twined with grapevines and smothered with inlays of rubies, proud and sparkling. Inside, it smells of honey and wine, and seems to exhibit a naturally contented glow. Just outside, numerous fruit trees sprout all about the temple's courtyard, to be sampled at your leisure.

The bathhouses are located just south of the temple, and are prime locations for some rest and relaxation. Bathe, swim, take a spa day! There are innumerable rooms to do exactly that, and more space than be reasonably filled by some sixty-or-seventy people.

Or maybe you're interested in getting absolutely sloshed instead. The vineyard is perfect for that, located to Io's northeast on one of its long, tapering peninsulas. Rows upon rows of grapevines lead up to the crown jewel of the region: a proud winery with enough goods to satisfy even the most parched.

For those less keen on mind-altering substances, the tea gardens are a far safer bet. They practically emanate tranquility, with their soft paper lanterns, thickets of tea trees, and a tea room with a seemingly endless supply of every supplement to your drink that you could ask for. And if none of the teabags or tea leaves in there suit your preference, you're free to wander about the gardens yourself and sample whatever you like.

The Honeycomb at the island's heart is much more akin to a play structure or jungle gym than anything else, but its interlocking passageways and erratic, hexagonal architecture aren't for nothing. It's an ideal spot for play or exercise, if you're into that kind of thing - or for getting positively sick on honey sticks.

The campsites ensure that you don't truly have to depart from Io, if you don't want to. Tents full of chairs and cushions and blankets make it a wonderful place to spend the night if you're so inclined, and the lockers full of food and drink are assurances that you won't go hungry. And with all these massive bonfires and firework cannons, why would you ever want to leave?

[Well, she's supposed to be trying to be a better person, so maybe she should try to go along with this kid's plan. Whatever. She can beat him at whatever he wants. So Beau rolls her eyes, but drops down to the nearest platform to head over.]

Alright, fine. C'mon, if that's your game I expect you to be really good at it.

[And she'll take off that way to rise to his challenge... or, the one that's been presented to her.]

[Ha! She bought it. Now, when Beau's not looking, Zidane will sneak behind the tower to go to that entrance. And climb partway inside and then get out of one of the windows, making the rest of the way up. There's a chance she'll work out that she's been tricked. Who knows? But hopefully by that time he'll have climbed a fair way up and be well on the way to beating her anyway.]

[She turns to head towards the structure he pointed out, doing a little half-jog to the edge, talking before she turns.]

Okay, so what exactly did you wanna do here--

[Which is about the point Beau turns, and sees he's just. Gone. Super gone.]

Wh-- hey! Kid! Where--

[Oh fuck. Oh fuck he could totally get up the tower couldn't he--]

HEY!

[She takes off in a dead sprint back towards the tower, but he has a solid minute lead at least, even if she's nearly running up the damn thing.]

[The temptation is there to stop and make some smug comment is very strong but Zidane keeps going. He can do that if he wins. He climbs out of the window and keeps climbing up the rest of the way as fast as possible. He's fast but maybe not quite as fast as Beau's maximum speed in his current state. However, he is obviously nowhere near as incompetent as he claimed earlier.

Will he make it to the top first or will Beau do something to her advantage?]

[She doesn't have anything in the way of magic to make her go faster- Beau has her ki, of course, and she's tapping into it as she climbs to give her the boost of adrenaline not to wear out. But he does have the head start, meaning she's reaching him in a dead heat at the end.

She will reach out and try to pull his tail just as he gets to the top edge, though. Whether or not it stops him, it's vengeance.]

[Well, that certainly does cause a reaction.] GAAAAAAH!

[And puts him off guard for a few seconds before he pushes himself up and glares at Beau. She's probably won by this point but he's less concerned about that than WOW RUDE YOU DON'T GRAB PEOPLE'S TAILS. :(]

[Chances are, it's the edge she needs for them both to clamber up to the platform without being able to tell a winner. Not that she cares a ton about that right now- as soon as she gets up, she points an accusing finger at them, frowning.]

Hey! You fuckin' lied to me to try and cheat! What the hell!

[Who is the winner? Who knows? But oww. Does she know that can really hurt? Weird people who try to pull his tail either for pettiness or weird curiosity. Zidane rubs the seat of his pants, still glaring.

But his glare goes when Beau calls him out on his lying.]

Oh, that? [And then a smirk forms on his face.] It looked like it was gonna be a really straightforward race. So I thought I’d try and liven things up a little. [Looks like someone is not sorry.]

That's not liven, it's lying. You have to have some kind of rule or you can't measure it. Don't sit here acting like the victim!!

[Well if you're not sorry, she's not sorry, so THERE. Beau folds her arms, face flat.]

You just couldn't take me head on.

Well, you're right. I did lie. [And considering he was raised as a thief he's unlikely to be sorry about that except certain circumstances like an innocent person's life being put in danger.] I mean c'mon do I really look like I run out of energy that easily? [He's obviously not a bodybuilder but there are some muscles there.]

But if we're gonna talk about rules, did we actually have any in place? [Excuse: There wasn't any rule saying speed only and no trickery allowed!!!!]

[Beau is gonna be the last person to holler if some rules were broken. To say she has a set of rules she enjoys following would be a direct contradiction, but sometimes you have to play the game. That's just how it is.]

It's not about rules. What are you, 12? It's about not being a dick.

[She just shakes her head. Actually, she just had a thought, fuck this. Beau just squints at him with her face still solidly judging the hell out of him.]

Whatever. I don't need to play baby games with you, I'm here to work out. You know. Like an adult.

[He was about to tell her that she was taking the whole thing way too seriously and this isn't something to get worked up over. But then the 'workout' comment made him frown at her very hard.]

Sure you are. The really mature lady who challenged a random guy to a race, told him "Come and fucking get me!" and pulled his tail [Someone is still a bit pissed off about that.] was only here to do grown-up things like workouts and not play kid games. Uh-huh.

[Beau just squints her eyes right at him, a direct challenge.]

I pulled your tail because you cheated. And also, racing is a workout. I'm just trying to make it fun. You want a challenge, you come back here and make it so winning means something. Otherwise, you can just be a dick about it. I don't care.

[She says, as if somehow, this entire argument was not about her caring or something.]

See you or not, kid.

[Honestly, whether or not he wins isn't that big a deal to him. It's a bummer if he loses but it's not the end of the world. He's not a spiteful person. And the thing he's most annoyed about is the tail pulling but even he won't be annoyed at that for long. And he was honestly here for fun. Well, fun in a different sense to Beau's. But if she wants another challenge....]

Well, I guess you took the whole thing more seriously than I did. [And this is less of a criticism than a realisation that they had different attitudes to the race.] But okay. If you really want, we'll have a rematch. [And he won’t cheat this time. That and he’s not stupid enough to think the same trick will work twice.]

However, do you want an exact race like before? I mean, I think we kind of know who is faster here. Not saying that to be a bad loser. I'm just saying it'll be a little predictable. Cos we could have another challenge but set up our own terms? Person who loses has to do something for the winner. And whoever cheats is gonna lose automatically. How ‘bout it?

[Everything gets taken seriously by Beau even if she swears it doesn't, a bad consequence of growing up consistently undervalued. So of course it was one sided, but... he's right. It's not fun to slam down a kid for the fun of it.]

Keep those rules. But we'll find another challenge later, huh? Something we agree on.

[Her voice is still a little curt and clipped, but it isn't accusatory at least. Small victories for Beau acting like a regular person? Who knows. Not being an asshole is harder than it sounds on paper.]

Right now, I just wanna run. So we can figure out this dumb thing later.

[Zidane would have taken the race more seriously and not cheated if there were a bunch of cute women to watch them both. Or, he would have taken it even more seriously and especially not cheated if Dagger was there. And gotten bummed out if Beau won because in his mind that would mean he wasn't able to impress the love of his life.

Well, if she just wants to race and have another challenge later, that's fine. Zidane holds out his hand and grins.] Okay, deal!

Right, so do you wanna start where we started first, uh.....hang on. I don't think I caught your name?

[Well that's something they can agree on- cute girls good. As if somehow Beau didn't radiate strong lesbian energy at every moment, honestly.

She looks at his hand for a moment, looking strong and judgmental-- but yeah, sure, she'll shake.]

Beau. You?

[She might not give out her name under other circumstances, but if they're all gonna be on this island, lying is going to be more trouble than it's worth.]

[CUTE GIRLS ARE AMAZING DON’T YOU AGREE BEAU?

He’ll shrug off the judgemental stare though and keep being friendly. Beau can think what she wants.]

Beau, huh? Name’s Zidane!

Okay, Beau. Same starting point and up the tower like before?

And look, not actively yelling at or hitting you? That is friendly on her standards. She even touched him nonviolently, look at that. Real paragon of friendliness.

But she'll just nod her head, a sharp affirmation.]

[The quirk of her eyebrow is the challenge he'll get for this one- nothing ostentatious, just ready as she relaxes her stance.]

3... 2...1... go!

[And they can take off for the proper rematch and fill the rest of their day with something maybe less abrasive.]
