Teamwork makes the Dream Work
Who: Weiss, Jaune and YOU!
What: Just normal team bonding and training that is perfectly restrained and safe.
When: 09/10
Where: Enso, D4
Warnings: It's a violent fight but nothing graphic so no.
[What a nice uneventful day on Ensō’s shore. The waves gently lap against the sand, surrounding the area with a sense of tranquility and security not often seen lately.
Until half of a boulder lands in the water and two figures go flying at opposite sides of the beach from a height that would definitely be harmful.]
[Panting, Jaune stands from the ground and takes a second to compose himself before he launches his shield at the smaller figure with enough force to possibly knock a normal person out, using that window to decrease the distance between him and his opponent.]
Oof! [ The shield collided with the aforementioned opponent, a girl by the name of Weiss Schnee. It was in the blink of an eye that it sent her flying backward, straight into a boulder on the beach with a sickening crack. The source of the tumult was the stone cracking on the small woman, though, rather than the other way around. Small crevices formed in a radial pattern in the rock surrounding Weiss just before she fell down to the sand, but she didn’t stay down for long.
As if it hardly phased her, Weiss jumped onto the back of Jaune’s now face-down shield and let a hand fly behind her to call a glyph to the face of the damaged boulder, using it to launch her forward. It was rather like the ice queen was surfing across the sand’s surface right toward Jaune, jumping off at the last minute into a flip above his head as a misdirect. His shield continued hurtling toward the water, and Weiss used another glyph to stop herself mid-air and redirect herself toward Jaune, Myrtenaster aimed firmly at his shoulder. ]
[With little time to react, Jaune yelped in pain as he was hit by the very sharp and potentially fatal tip of Weiss’s sword, flying back and flipping several times out of control as his face skated on the rough sand. Extending a hand to the ground, he managed to stop himself, glancing over to at the already damaged boulder, and kicked it hard to finish the job. With the pieces now at a reasonable size about as big as his upper half, he started throwing them in the Snow Angel’s direction so he could run and retrieve his shield.]
Here, catch!
[Emitting a relieved sigh, he fished his shield out of the water and started to drag his feet through the wet sand to return to their battle, breaking into a run and sweeping his sword down in the direction of Weiss.]
[ The rocks that flew toward Weiss didn't connect. The first couple of rocks were dodged with rapid flips and half-corkscrew jumps that any gymnast would be impressed with, then another glyph to full-on block the final one from colliding with her. It gave Jaune the time he needed to retrieve his shield, and so did Weiss's next action. A large glyph formed in front of her, one that looked very different from most of her normal ones, and spun rapidly before quickly sputtering out. A wasted movement, even if she had promised to show Jaune her summoning when she had the chance. The moment of panicked surprise from Weiss was a clear opening. ]
[Jaune had seen enough of Weiss’s glyphs to know to be on guard when she began to conjure one. Even more since he didn’t recognize this particular one. A new attack?
Was this how she summoned?
Feet skidding against the sand, he shielded himself in a running stop, prepared for the worst. Unless the disappearing glyph would form into a towering undead-grimm-knight-thing, he was in the clear. Able to react quickly enough to still take advantage, the sharpened side of Crocea Mors struck down in a smooth, practiced movement that was aimed for her torso, and created a shockwave of wind in its wake.]
[Weiss doesn’t have enough time to block, and glyph after glyph should have been fine normally, but she was already feeling like she’d been fighting for an hour. Her reflexes suffered because of it and she didn’t manage to get a glyph up to block Jaune’s sword, instead getting basically smashed into the sand. Her aura protected her from getting her arm cut off as she went to try to protect her torso, but the amount of force behind the hit sent her straight into the sand, creating an impact trail in her wake. She’s practically half buried and coughing as she tries to brush the sand off of her to get up again, though before she makes it off of her knees she immediately gestures for another glyph, one that Jaune likely won’t see because it’s definitely a black one behind him. Rather suddenly, Weiss throws Myrtenaster at him very much like Pyrrha had speared him for her, except with a significant increase in force given the increased gravity from her glyph. She moves to stand up as she does, ready to slide toward him with a row of consecutive glyphs on the ground, but about three in she stops and falls down to her knees, holding up her hand. ]
Time out! [ Her voice sounds breathless, like she’d been fighting for far longer than Jaune had. She wasn’t this out of practice, was she? ]
[OOC note: OTA if you want to have your characters watch the entire fight, or come in when they’re done to react!]

Seperate Toplevel, closed to Weiss
He really likes this hoodie. He's not particularly fast, and Myrtenaster sure is flying at him at an accelerated speed, so he dodges to the side, doing a sort of half-assed cartwheel that leaves him stumbling over to her. He doesn't have time to be disappointed that he couldn't show off his Really Cool Weapon Upgrade, because concern over how fatigued his friend appears makes him tune out everything else.]
What's wrong?
sup
Something's wrong with my glyphs. Can you check my aura level? [ It'll probably look normal, which is even more questionable considering how exhausted she is. ]
you know everything, you?
It looks normal. [He holds it out to show her himself.] Has that ever happened before?
not much son just chillin
Then futilely, she tries again. And a fourth time. Jaune should probably stop her because she's looking incredibly stressed that it's not showing up because it needs to show up, that was how she determined she was ready to leave. Because she could do this. She can't have this be something she can't control. ]
me 2
[He speaks up softly when she tries again. When she continues to persist, he tries again, more alarmed.]
Weiss, please--
[He thinks he kind of understands what she's doing. Maybe not fully, but he can recognize her frustration. Perhaps it's a mistake, but he reaches for her shoulder without thinking.]
--You're going to get hurt.
no subject
Don't touch me. I need to be able to summon, Jaune.
no subject
[He mumbles, quickly retracting his hand. There's obviously more going on than he knows about. He's quiet for a moment, unsure of what to say, before stepping beside her within her line of sight.]
Whatever's going on, it's not on you.
no subject
[ Because if she can't do that, then how is she supposed to do the harder things? How is she supposed to protect people from herself when it comes out on accident instead of when she can control it? She raises her sword to try one more time, but the glyph doesn't even form this time, instead Weiss just stares at the sand in front of her. ]
no subject
Maybe... [He starts carefully.] Before you tried, you used that first glyph. So maybe that's why. We could go to the green water and try again later.
no subject
[ She assumes he won't take offense at that. It's not that it was a bad fight, and Weiss's stamina has never been excellent, but she's never been that bad. ]

no subject
[ 6-8 months of not doing anything because she was hurt and scared and angry is enough to make her doubt herself. 6-8 months of doing that with her father around? Hahaha ]
no subject
[He won't outright say she's being too hard on herself, but he definitely thinks she's being too hard on herself.]
no subject
[ She'd be a lot less hard on herself if she knew that it was the crap island's fault. ]

When we were traveling to Mistral, we ran into this creepy guy named Tyrian who tried to kidnap Ruby. He was stronger than us--any of us put together--and obviously more experienced, but that didn't stop Ren, Nora or Ruby from trying to stop him. He managed to take us out, and was about to hurt Ruby, I saw her aura break and everything and I didn't do anything about it. If it hadn't been for Qrow, things would be very different right now. Maybe you were the only one stopping you, and I think that you're not making excuses about it shows how strong you really are. But if you hold onto that indefinitely and keep blaming yourself, you're only holding yourself back. [Says the world's biggest hypocrite.] It's in the past, Weiss. We're here now.
no subject
It's been five minutes since I realized I can't seem to summon, I'm allowed to be upset with myself. Five minutes is not three-quarters of a year.
no subject
[He shrugs, stepping away and starts stretching. If Weiss wants to be upset she'll be upset. If she wants to talk about it, she will. He's been proven a multitude of times that he's really not good at encouraging people, so he's learned to not push it.]
no subject
After a few more minutes of silence, she pipes up with. ]
Thanks, Jaune.
no subject
Any...time? [He's not sure what he did for Weiss to thank him now, but if he helped or at least didn't screw up as badly as he thought, he would take it.]
no subject
Goodness, that certainly sounded impressive. So, approximately how many pieces do I need to find to start putting you two back together again?
no subject
Unless your medical talents include repiecing boulders, we're both perfectly fine.
[ Though she didn't sound happy about it. What is making her glyphs so hard to use at her normal rate? ]
Watch out for my crater.
[ She's not about to let the blind man trip over what looks like a meteor hit the beach. ]
no subject
[Jaune pauses before doing a little theatrical bow. Ignis was clapping, okay? The look he gives Weiss is concerned, but he doesn't say anything about it, for now.]
There's still pieces of boulders around too. I can take care of those. Maybe we can make something out of them now.
no subject
[Ignis wouldn't mind being able to heal up his wounded pride, that's for sure.]
If you're not hurt, then why do you sound so unhappy? Is training not going well?
[Carefully, he moves closer, wary of the warnings he's been given. When his foot finds the edge of Weiss' crater, he stops uncertain which direction to go to get around it. To cover his predicament, he attempts to distract away from it.]
Jaune, if any of the rock pieces are relatively flat, could I beg your assistance moving them to the islets later? They will be useful for cooking with.
no subject
What was all that noise?
[Exercising a little extra caution, he swiftly made a beeline to Ignis' side. In the brief moment that he was trying to take in what was going on he at first missed that Ignis was considering climbing into the crater. He made a move to hop down before it hit him, and he instantly swiveled to get Iggy.]
It's like... a 30 degree angle?
[That might not have been accurate, but he was trying, reaching up to take Ignis' hand and hold him near the elbow with his other hand, offering some support so he could step down. He knew this was hard for someone as proud as Ignis. He couldn't imagine trying to do a lot of this stuff blind.
Glancing back towards Weiss and Jaune, he asked in perhaps a more alarmed tone than necessary.]
What happened?
no subject
[ Weiss didn't really like admitting that anything about her was less than perfect, especially when it should be. It came from a long history of not being perfect meaning it was a worthless effort, even if she'd gotten better about not worrying about perfect form and making no mistakes. ]
I use my semblance- that's the glyphs I use, that Prompto said were bluish- far more than most people utilize theirs. I normally have a grasp on doing that and can balance it with my aura so I'm not immediately exhausted. I've used a couple of glyphs before and I was just fine. [ Just not.. consecutively and very quickly like she was today. The rapid use of them shouldn't have affected her, and yet. ]
Some of my glyphs didn't even activate, which is even more concerning. [ She won't go into which ones, or why it was so frustrating. There were a lot of emotional components to that, and while she liked Prompto and Ignis, she wasn't exactly at a spill-your-guts level of friendship with either of them yet.
She glances over at Prompto, reaching up to wipe some sand off of her cheek. She hasn't realized there are a couple of pebbles from the boulder breaking on her in her hair yet though. ]
Jaune and I were just training, Prompto.
no subject
Weiss has always been really talented at summoning glyphs, so what happened...wasn't normal. [And he won't get more personal than that.]
[Perking up at the request to help, he nodded eagerly.] Sure! Do you plan to use them as cutting boards?
[The pebbles are a stark contrast against her hair though, and Jaune points at her without touching.] You got rocks in your hair. We have to stay in top form, Prompto.
no subject
[There is amusement in Ignis' tone as he replies, though as Prompto, Noctis, or even Nyx can tell them, Ignis and breaks have a very loose relationship. As in, one is rarely seen around the other.
He falls silent for a few moments, then, focusing on the step down. It's much easier to do with Prompto's help, and the blonde is given a genuine 'thank you' once the advisor has completed the movement.]
Cutting boards are one application, but they can also be used for many other things. Grills, platforms for baking. Smaller, rounder ones can also be used in anything from boiling water and heating soup, to frying meats and eggs.
[Ignis tackles the less serious question first before turning his full attention to Weiss' dilemma.]
So you are finding limits where there once were none and growing tired more quickly. Would that be an accurate summery?
[It sounds extremely familiar to what he was discussing with Muffet not long ago, truth be told.]
no subject
That was training? It sounded like you were tossing spells around.
[Which, for them, might as well have been like tossing elemental grenades around.]
It seems like everyone has been affected like that. I haven't been able to summon my gun like usual, and I think Noct and Nyx have gotten tired when warping?
[He glanced up at Ignis to confirm that.]
Maybe we're further away from the things that make our powers work at home. Like, our worlds all seem to work differently, but which world's rules work here?
no subject
It's probably better not to dwell on it until there's a real way to find answers. Weiss snaps herself out of the thought, and focuses instead on the conversation. She brushes the rocks out of her hair on Jaune's note, making a face as she does but when Ignis and Prompto both describe limitations, growing tired, she looks visibly relieved. It shouldn't be relieving, but.. well, she had banked her ability to survive leaving on her ability to summon without accidentally killing someone. ]
Everyone's been experiencing limitations? [ Because if it wasn't Weiss's fault, and it was just stopped, then it wasn't that she'd lost control of her summoning. ] One of my abilities is linked directly to my emotional state. I'd only just learned to control it before I left home because if I can't it leads to.. accidents. [ She'll call it that for now. ] But if this is being on the island and not because I lost control again, it should be fine.
[ She looks over at Prompto, gesturing to him with Myrtenaster. ] Though it's definitely not that, Prompto. Jaune and my abilities are linked directly to our souls. I highly doubt we left those at home.
no subject
[He noticed Prompto help Ignis, saying nothing about it. They both knew eachother than he knew either of them, and had Prompto not been around he might have offered to help, but the blonde seemed to know what he was doing.]
I could probably break a few in half and try to smooth them down if that's what you're planning.
[He goes quiet, listening to their exchange.] I haven't experienced any limitations. [It's mostly mumbled to himself, but he isn't sure if that's a good thing. Would he be experiencing the same frustrations as Weiss and the others if he was more on their level?]
So basically, this place has put some sort of block between our souls and what we can do with them.
no subject
Cooking and reading I guess, though both things are a big part of my duties. I'm not so sure they count.
[Not really wanting to go into it farther, Ignis quickly shifts the topic after assuring Jaune he will be most grateful to the young man if he can do just that with the rocks.]
They do get tired when warping, and Noctis can only summon a fraction of what he should be able to. Considering the number of people who have their skills limited in some way keeps going up, I suspect that your control, Weiss, is just as good as it was when you left home. Whatever the source of our power is, something externally is preventing those powers from working as they should.
[He mulls over this a few seconds before nodding and continuing.]
Even on our world, powers have a wide range. It's nearly impossible to predict the kind of powers and the strength those powers may have. The Storyteller is regaining strength. They've told us that. Who knows if whoever is responsible for bringing us here is doing the same. They would have to make sure our abilities are never stronger than theirs if they want to keep us here. Limitations are the easiest way to do that.
no subject
[Then he could at least get coconuts and do other simple tasks in a flash. Here he was, attempting to climb towering trees, and people were just flying around shooting up boulders. What use was he here without even his gun?
With a few cautious last steps he scraped his way to the bottom of the crater and held onto Ignis for that last bit. These things were going to take some time to get used to.]
If we believe what the Storyteller says, then we must be dealing with something pretty big and we don't even have any idea what it is. It would have to be a god or something, right?
no subject
[ Blocking their souls, come on now. Not ok. :| But the further Ignis and Prompto explain, the less stressed Weiss looks. It's certainly a huge relief to know that there's nothing wrong with her, she's not going to put people in danger if she isn't perfectly okay all the time. The fact that it means she still was ready to leave, that what she was banking on to prove she was ready to be on her own is still in tact came second.
Still... ]
That they needed to block our abilities means they're likely not as powerful as they want us to believe they are and they just found a way to take them aside from that. [ Otherwise why would they need to?
Weiss makes a mental note that when she finally finds a spot she wants to build that shelter she's planning, she should try to make a little "counter space" so to speak for Ignis. It won't be much, but it'll be something. ]
no subject
[Can you tell Mickey was excited by the whole thing? Cause he was excited by the whole thing, starry-eyed, flailing.]
First you were like, bam, and then you were like, pow, and the shields, and the stuff, and the things, and, WOW!
no subject
I shouldn't have thrown my shield, but I didn't account for Weiss's speed.
no subject
[ Weiss is less praise-happy. She'll give it when it's due, but she's definitely more about teachable moments than anything. She's not remotely happy with her own performance, though she's not about to voice that. It's not something she understands yet, and Jaune sure as heck isn't going to. Either way, she comes trudging behind Jaune through the sand, her steps heavier now than they were at the start of the fight. ]
Hi Mickey.
no subject
I didn't know size could factor into it like that! That gives me a some hope, huh?
[A little joke. Cause he's short. Get it?]
no subject
[He kept talking partly in hopes that he could keep Weiss distracted. She was still more skilled, but she shouldn't have been struggling like this against him. He rotated his shoulder a few times and started stretching.]
Size always makes a difference. It can definitely be used as an advantage. You could use yours to evade me, or use my height against me and take me down! [He finished cheerfully, encouraging Mickey and perhaps not fully realizing it was a joke because he was excited about strategies now.]
no subject
[ Honest question, not an insult. Jaune's balance doesn't seem like it's exactly on par with hers. ] Also, be careful what surface you do it on. Sand shifts so it would take a long period of time for it to cause damage, but if you try that on rock or another hard surface, you're going to scrape it pretty intensely and you'll have to file it down to get the damage out.
Of course you have hope though, Mickey. Just remember that there's a lot more to a fight than brute strength. --And Jaune's right, evasion is an entirely useful technique for smaller individuals. [ Weiss is pretty small, though nowhere near as small as Mickey, but still enough to know that if a super buff White Fang Lieutenant grabs her by the face mid-maneuver and slams her into a train, it's going to hurt real bad. First hand experience on that one. ]
no subject
Gee, you guys sound like experts! Wherever you're from, it must be really safe with you two around, fighting bad guys and showin' 'em who's boss! Where did you learn how to do all that?
no subject
[Mickey you are too good. Jaune rubs the back of his neck awkwardly, glancing to Weiss.] Just, different places, but we still have a long way to go. [Especially himself.] It's not that safe, but that's why we fight. Wanna train with us sometime?
no subject
[ Look, they're like an endangered species on Remnant. Four kingdoms! And a bunch of stuff that disappears over night! That's it! She's hearing about these other worlds and Weiss is like how did we end up in the only one humans are struggling to populate. ]
We're certainly not experts, but we'll get there. [ A beat, then she says, almost sounding offended. ] We're technically drop-outs. [ she has just dealt an emotional blow to herself, she can't believe she's a drop-out..... ]
no subject
Miss Weiss here already offered to teach me a few things... would it really be okay if I trained with you two? I'd hate to slow you down!
[But he can't stop smiling, he REALLY wants to spar and fight and be a better swordsman! But gotta be polite first.]
no subject
Hey. [He's frowning at Mickey.] You're not slowing us down. I think we could both probably learn from your fighting style too.
no subject
[ She's not going to say he's not going to slow them down. Jaune is the nice one, not her. Sorry. Though it might make a little more sense why she's always such a know-it-all and the first to Weissplain things to people. The more you repeat information and have to explain it, the more firmly cemented it is in your head. ]
no subject
[She knows perfectly well they're both friendly enough people, and she relaxes a second later as she realizes they're only sparring with each other. It's just hard to shake that initial first reaction to seeing humans fight, the nervousness that comes from knowing how much more fragile you are compared to these people.]
[Still, the moment passes quickly, and she leans casually against a nearby tree to watch the rest of the fight from a safe distance.]
[Once they finish, they'll be able to hear the sound of polite applause drifting down the beach from where she's standing.]
Quite an impressive display, dearies. You must have been practicing your techniques for a long time.
SORRY I TOOK FOREVER
[ Weiss looks up in surprise at the source of the clapping and voice, standing up and straightening herself. Muffet always seemed refined, but with a good head on her shoulders. Spider or human didn't matter, Weiss wanted to show her a good face. ]
We used to attend combat school together. We've got a long ways to go, though.
It's okay :D
Ah, that explains it- you did look like you were used to sparring with each other. Still, I certainly think you're making a promising start.
Who or what were you being trained to fight, if you don't mind my asking?
