What: A mountain of spare clothes has been made available in one of the rooms in the Storyteller’s Temple. Come get some freebies! Last month’s log is here.
When: This log is centered around the 4th- 14th Sept, but the Clothes Mountain will be around throughout September.
Where: The Storyteller’s Temple.
Warnings: none expected- mark on individual toplevels as needed.

NOTE: The Clothes Mountain provides free, roughly modern-style clothing to any and all. Some guidelines are here- go wild in putting your characters in weird and unusual outfits. However, in the interests of leaving enough for others we ask that characters don’t hoard too many pieces of clothing (as an estimate… under five full sets/ten pieces of clothes?) Thank you!

[Admittedly, Beau is pretty used to running around in just her usual monk vestments, seeing as she's kind of wearing a uniform. That said, no one is here to tell her not to, and free shit is free shit so here she is. She seems pretty content with her pants, but has acquired a couple of interesting shirts that she's left in a pile next to her. The thing likely of note, though, is that she's cutting the sleeves off of every single one of them. Anything that did not start as a tank top is a tank top now. She doesn't have a knife or anything, but she is carefully holding a throwing star, severing some of the stitching on another t-shirt in her hands as she sits cross legged nearby.

Maybe she should be looking for something functional. But right now her priority is clear, and that priority is fuck sleeves.]

[Ray also can't resist the siren song of free stuff, especially with her school uniform not being suited to roughing it.

She pauses--one of the galaxy animal shirts in hand--when she noticed what the person nearby is doing.]

Is there something the matter with the sleeves?

[lesbeau]

[Beau tilts her head to look up at who's asking, before continuing on her work while she talks.]

They're bullshit. Makes it harder to punch stuff. This'll give way more shoulder space.

[Because that's. Totally most people's priorities, huh.]

Besides, it looks, like, really cool.

[Ray glances down at her own short sleeves.]

I didn't realize it made such a difference.

[She considers the person before her with curiosity and slight wariness. Woman soldiers aren't unheard of where she's from, though she hasn't met many herself.]

Are you a soldier, in that case?

[lesbeau]

[Beau doesn't respond to the first question, but does arch an eyebrow at the second.]

No? I just hit shit.

[Technically, she's a librarian. Technically.]

Really, more of the 'person you can pay to hit shit', but on the short term.

Oh--so it is a job, of sorts.

[She's not sure if "shit-hitter" would be the right position title--still, being paid makes it sound like a job.]

Do you hurt other people or just--

[Shit?]

[I mean, it's kind of her title. Frankly, that's probably a more fun title than mercenary.]

I mean, sometimes people. There's a lot of shitty people in the world.

[Which kind of implies she only hurts shitty people, which isn't... really the case. She's probably hurt good people. (She's trying not to do that anymore.)]

I'm not gonna hit you, if you're worried.

Oh--I wasn't exactly worried about that. But thank you?

[She's not even going to embarrass herself by promising not to hit this lady either, since it's probably pretty plain that a mercenary doesn't need to be worried about an attack from Ray.]

Several of the teachers at my school had been in the military, but I haven't met anyone with a job like yours before. I was just curious.

[It's kind of a relief that she's not like Instructor Bai--he'd always freaked Ray out.]

[She usually finds it helps freak people out less if she says she's not gonna wallop them. Even though her outfit doesn't really carry the same threat that it does back home, you can't say that without being a little intimidating.]

Maybe you should be.

[As if that somehow made her less scary. She didn't even mean it as a threat, it's just-- true. Mostly.]

Eeh, we're like, cool wanderers, kinda? Most people don't. But the military mostly just breeds assholes or lazy people who want a good post. That sort of structure just benefits the guys at the top.

[liveasmyself]

[Ray listens with the anxious excitement of a student listening to someone trashtalk a hated teacher. ...Because that is essentially what this is to her.]

It sounds like you really don't like them!

I don't know much about what the military is like, but I don't think anyone at my school liked Instructor Bai. He was always barking at people asking them if they were Communists.

[lesbeau]

[In all honesty, she kind of is too. She may be talking about the military, but she's thinking about every smug monk at the monastery that did nothing to take away her hatred of 99% of authority.]

Ugh, yeah, that sucks when people get up in your face like that? Like they're all, I'm gonna threaten you cuz I just wanna feel powerful, not because I'm actually good at anything.

[At least her teachers were teaching her how to fight, and actually being able to land a hit on them was a good thing. Great rage motivation.]

Like, what dicks.

[Much as Ray would like to play it cool, she can't keep her mouth from dropping open to hear the objects of their mutual distaste insulted outright. Even Wei didn't go that far! She's kind of in awe.

She musters the mettle to nod her assent.]

Exactly! [Even though she immediately feels like she's been complicit in some misdeed just by agreeing.]

Do you often have to deal with people like that?

[lesbeau]

[Join the dark side of trash talk, young one. Beau's got you.]

The world is full of people like that. People who just want power and will be a dickhead to anyone they can control.

[She looks back towards Fang Ray, shaking her finger her direction.]

Trick is, you never let someone push you around. They want respect, they can earn it. Fight the man, kid.

[liveasmyself]

[Ray nods dutifully but hesitates before answering. She knows she doesn't even compare to a mercenary or anything when it comes to physical prowess. And she was just as scared of Instructor Bai as the other students were, so how much backbone can she really say she has?]

Okay...

[She doesn't want to be pushed around, though; she thinks of her mom silent no matter what the slight. It seems like a nightmarish future.]

...How exactly would you suggest somebody do that?

[lesbeau]

[This is simultaneously the worst and best question she has ever been asked. On one hand, this is something she is incredibly good at, on virtue of doing this for basically her entire life. On the other hand, please no one take advice from Beau, it's just not the wise thing to do. Outwardly though, she looks absolutely confident in her response.]

Never let 'em see you sweat. They push back, you stand tall and show them you're not afraid. People like that only get power over you if you break. If you show them you're scared. Never show them your fear, and they can never win.

[liveasmyself]

[It sounds like something easier said than done, but that won't stop Ray from giving it a shot.]

I think I can do that...

[She reaches inside herself, trying to find the mettle that made her snap at Wei when he tried to treat her like she was helpless. Sucking in a breath, she squares her shoulders and tries to hold herself perfectly upright. How's she doing?]

[lesbeau]

[Beau watches with intent, crossing her arms like she's judging her very hard on her interpretation.

But once she does it, Beau breaks into a grin, reaching forward and clapping her on the shoulder hard.]</small. There you go! Real strong. Just do that to anyone who pisses you off, look 'em right in the eye too. Then they'll get freaked out and know you're stronger than they are, hands down.

[The shoulder clap catches her off balance, but she's grinning even as she catches her balance.]

I'll let you know how it works out if I have to put it into practice.

[A brief pause.]

Thank you.

[lesbeau]

[She just winks at her.]

You know it. Good luck, kid. Keep that rebellious spirit. And tear off some shirt sleeves. It'll make you look really buff.

[She says, continuing to do just that.]
