JUNE AFTERMATH: MAGIC LANTERN STRANGE

Slide the Light Off You
As promised, the evening of the 21st finds the Jormun hosting a party on Ensō's largest beachfront. Near immediately, it should be clear that they've spared absolutely no expense when it comes to showing their story-walker brethren a good time.

Of course, they may also be...showing off a little. The stalls and comfortable seating supplied around multiple firepits appears to be a mishmash of Jormun built contraptions and items requested from the Storyteller- many may be delighted to see the variety of beach cushions and blankets, items the Jormun will be happy to let their story-walker friends take home at the end of the festivities. A veritable smorgasbord of food and drink is also readily available, from the kid-friendly options of brrshavak (a spicy drink with a taste akin to liquified chili pepper) and molkavarr (a rich chocolaty broth) to the alcoholic rakvrhak (a rich wine that tastes oddly plumlike). Do be warned, however, that the last is incredibly potent.

Large slabs of driftwood have been laid out to form impromptu tables, bristling with the Jormun's culinary expertise: fried squid, seaweed wraps, spicy pickled kelp, kebabs of roasted eel, hard-boiled snapling eggs, and so on. The vegetables and meats of the sea have been laid out for all to enjoy, so tuck in!

Throughout the evening the air will be filled with the sound of music, with multiple Jormun eager to show off their skill in instrumentation. Conch-shell horns, carved driftwood flutes, urchin-needle harps, and countless more contraptions engineered by a deep sea-dwelling people fill the air with the most peculiar but nonetheless not unpleasant sound. Most of the bands will be set up in the shallow waters, however, as their instruments are not made to be used in open air - try playing them above the surface of the water at your own risk.

Of course, there's plenty more to entertain even the most difficult of people.

You're Living the Strobe Light
Those interested in proving their strength and skill will be encouraged to enter one of the many tournaments across the shoreline. The tournaments vary, featuring such challenges as play fights with the schlacknorkcvic to prove who is the greatest warrior, timed events to see who can stay on a bucking tigershark for the longest, and even a tourney of brovonkosshk, a board game somewhat similar to chess. Don't see anything you're interested in? Make your own. If you can think it, the Jormun will happily accommodate it - impromptu challenges are the highlight of such evenings, after all, though the Jormun won't be taking any responsibility for the first poor soul that decides to usher in a drinking contest.

A small variety of walker games are also available. Jormun children are more than eager to play such games as hide-and-seek or red light, green light, while Connor Murphy will be bringing his Cards Against Humanity deck, for those ready to completely screw with the idea of a fourth wall. There's even a game of Spin the Bottle... except the bottle is being spun overhead like a mace. Being hit by said bottle requires you to do a stupidly ridiculous task, so perhaps it's best to avoid that particular adaptation...

And of course, there's the lightshow.

As mentioned previously, the main show of the evening is the show of brssticca: bursts of magical light beneath the water that will put any fireworks show to shame. The lights are safe to wade and swim through, do keep in mind that the phosphorescent algae tends to cling to the skin. And should you reach into those spiraling, fluorescent nebulae of patterns beneath the surface, some of the configurations of light may abruptly shatter like broken glass.

Additionally, skilled Jormun will be happy to assist those who care to dress up for the event with intricate applications of shellivthiss - a style of waterproof body paint that is not only bright, but luminescent. Something the Jormun may forget to mention, however, is how similar shellivthiss is to henna; should you decide to get all dolled up, except to shine bright light a diamond for weeks to come.

Lastly, those who wanted to bring their own adventures are welcome to as well! Supplying some dope roast? Bringing those sweet, sweet greens? Have some alcohol to supply? All is welcomed by the Jormun - and undoubtedly, your fellow adventurers as well.

[The feeling is mutual-her eyes have fallen on Ginko from time to time and she knows he's been on the island for as long as she has, though they've never spoken. Things have gotten in the way. Mana pool shenanigans, island teleportation, treasure hunting, but it's time to change that.

Also, why are you all questioning her cake! It's a party!! There's food all over!! Just accept it.]

[That technically answers the question?? It's fine. Nevermind it was like three day old birthday cake for someone else.]

[Listen, there are some differences between the general abundance of food associated with parties like this and the specific presentation of a handful of cake from a child's pocket, and one of those differences is that the latter raises way more questions.]

I... see. Thank you.

[He's gonna... see if he can put off eating this, though he suspects he'll probably have to at some point.]

[Does it tho, Ginko? Does it?

Have fun putting it off. At least she won't hound him to consume the cake, because she's kept it in her pocket so long anyway. Just shove it in, wait till you need a snack and enjoy. Just ignore the fact she's snacking on the leftover frosting on her fingers. That's fine.]

I like it. People are happy and their hearts are smiling. It makes this place very warm. Are you happy too?

[That's... probably fine, sure. And he guesses might be taken as evidence that the cake is probably okay? Unless she just doesn't care.

Regardless of the state of this cake, though - this is. Really cute. Ginko smiles slightly despite himself, and his tail gives a couple amused thumps against the sand.] ...Yeah, I guess so. It's pretty nice.

[She just doesn't care. No mold means no problems and she abides by that terrible rule at all times. She'll teach you fools. It's totally fine.

The excitable tail thumping and his little smile make her smile in turn and she points towards the water to see if he'll move his tail again if he sees the incredible, amazing, spectacular underwater display happening.]

[You know what, that's valid. Ginko's eaten worse things than pocket cake himself, anyway, so there's always a chance he'll go ahead and eat it once he's adjusted to the idea.

He looks to where she's pointing, ears tilting forward, and congratulations Ren because there goes his tail again.] I did. It's really pretty incredible; I don't think I've seen anything like that, even in my own world. What about you?

[It's like Ammy's-back and forth, back and forth. She's so happy to see it wiggle again.]

No, I didn't see things like this in that place I lived before.

[Not her world and not her home because she found better places for those terms.]

Tim found fireworks-the water looks like that. I've seen that loud surprise here.

[He notices that choice of words, but sees no reason to comment on it. He supposes that, in a world like this one, rather than Ryslig, it makes sense that some people would be inclined to move away from thinking of their original worlds as where they belonged.]

Right, the fireworks - those are pretty, uh. Exciting. [A little loud for him, but that's fine.]

Do you want to go play in the water? We can look for treasure.

[Because this is literally the only time she has any desire to go more than two inches into the ocean.]

...Y'know, why not. [Those bursts of light seem to be harmless enough, so.] Shouldn't go too far out, but sticking to the shallows should be okay.

It's safe if you stay in the water that's-

[She drops to the ground, leveling her hand against her leg, and then reaching over to do the same for him. That's how far he can go. Up to his weird monster ankle and that's it.]

This high. You won't drown.

[Go any farther and yeah, you'll die.]

Just that high, huh? Well, I'll keep that in mind.

[Listen he can respect this kid's desire to be cautious, and if she goes a little overboard with it, that's fine.

He steps toward the water, but makes sure not to get too far ahead of Ren.] Ready?

[catpiper]

[Hell yeah she's ready! It's sparkle water time!! The only time when it's okay to live free of fear and bust forward into the unknown.

Which means, he says ready and she immediately jumps with all her terrible might into the ankle deep water. If Ginko's close enough, he'll be getting a small shower for his troubles.]

[OH there she goes. He snorts quietly, raising an arm reflexively to block the splashing, whether it actually reaches his face or not. He follows behind more slowly, watching the water and the fluorescence within it rippling around his feet.]

Hey, if you don't slow down you're gonna be leaving me behind here. [She'll just be so incredibly far ahead, being like three feet in front of him in shallow water. How will he ever catch up.]

[The request is enough to make her stop in her tracks after doing a single twirl in the water. She can't tell if it's teasing because she's Like That and keeps his slow pace in mind for the future. If monsters reappear or monkeys attack, he's going to need to hide. It'll be impossible for him to outrun things if treading through the water is difficult for him and she makes a note to look for huge hidey holes after the party.]

I won't leave you alone-I'll wait. You're doing a good job.

[onegreeneye]

[Oh no he forgot kids don't always know what jokes are, but also, that's cute?? He catches up to her pretty easily now, giving a reassuring smile. He hopes it is, anyway; it's hard to be sure now that he has tusks.]

Ah-- sorry, that was a joke. I should be alright; you are pretty fast, though.

[He's not gonna retract compliments about kids, okay. Also she is fast, or maybe he's just old and tired.]

[Look, she's spent her whole life running and hiding. A compliment about her speed is a glowing testament to her survival skills and that brings a huge smile to her face.]

I can teach you how to run faster. We can play tag.

[He's pretty big and they're gonna need a lot of practice.]

Ah, really? I'd appreciate that.

[If he's honest, running has never been his strong suit. He doesn't know if this kid can do much about that, of course, but it is true.]

I've... never played tag before, actually.

[Oh. Oh Ginko. Today is your lucky day because for an unlimited time, she's offering her services for the incredible price of 0 treasures.

And she seems to plan on taking advantage of his ignorance on the matter, slowly, steadily, creeping forward like some kind of monster from the abyss and-

If he doesn't move, she's going to poke his hand, say you're it, you're it! and run back towards the shore.]

What-- [That's all he manages before she pokes him and darts off, leaving Ginko to... well, honestly, he just stands there? He just stands there in the water and looks faintly confused, looking from his hand to Ren.]

I tagged you and now you have to tag me. You have to run and do that.

[God, look. She's even helping by staying at the water's edge, helpfully giving out all this tag advice. Come on!!]

If you touch other people, they have to play too.

Okay, well, the good news is he thinks he understands now. The bad news is that he's... not sure he can play this game.]

I, uh... I'm sorry, but I don't think I should.

[Okay so how does he tell this kid that he has, in the past, while overtaken by a magically-induced murderous hunger-rage, chased down and attempted to kill multiple people (including children) and successfully killed one, and now there are really no words to describe his aversion to the idea of chasing after a kid if it's at all avoidable?

Answer: He doesn't!]

It, uh-- doesn't really seem like my thing. We could do something else, though.

[Look, that's a Ren approved method of problem solving. Shove it under the rug, pretend like nothing happened and call it a day. That's fine. She doesn't know any other games that could him practice running though and their options for hide and seek are limited on the beach, so-]
