June Aftermath: Magic Lantern Strange

JUNE AFTERMATH: MAGIC LANTERN STRANGE

Slide the Light Off You
As promised, the evening of the 21st finds the Jormun hosting a party on Ensō's largest beachfront. Near immediately, it should be clear that they've spared absolutely no expense when it comes to showing their story-walker brethren a good time.

Of course, they may also be...showing off a little.

The stalls and comfortable seating supplied around multiple firepits appears to be a mishmash of Jormun built contraptions and items requested from the Storyteller- many may be delighted to see the variety of beach cushions and blankets, items the Jormun will be happy to let their story-walker friends take home at the end of the festivities. A veritable smorgasbord of food and drink is also readily available, from the kid-friendly options of brrshavak (a spicy drink with a taste akin to liquified chili pepper) and molkavarr (a rich chocolaty broth) to the alcoholic rakvrhak (a rich wine that tastes oddly plumlike). Do be warned, however, that the last is incredibly potent.

Large slabs of driftwood have been laid out to form impromptu tables, bristling with the Jormun's culinary expertise: fried squid, seaweed wraps, spicy pickled kelp, kebabs of roasted eel, hard-boiled snapling eggs, and so on. The vegetables and meats of the sea have been laid out for all to enjoy, so tuck in!

Throughout the evening the air will be filled with the sound of music, with multiple Jormun eager to show off their skill in instrumentation. Conch-shell horns, carved driftwood flutes, urchin-needle harps, and countless more contraptions engineered by a deep sea-dwelling people fill the air with the most peculiar but nonetheless not unpleasant sound. Most of the bands will be set up in the shallow waters, however, as their instruments are not made to be used in open air - try playing them above the surface of the water at your own risk.

Of course, there's plenty more to entertain even the most difficult of people.

You're Living the Strobe Light
Those interested in proving their strength and skill will be encouraged to enter one of the many tournaments across the shoreline. The tournaments vary, featuring such challenges as play fights with the schlacknorkcvic to prove who is the greatest warrior, timed events to see who can stay on a bucking tigershark for the longest, and even a tourney of brovonkosshk, a board game somewhat similar to chess. Don't see anything you're interested in? Make your own. If you can think it, the Jormun will happily accommodate it - impromptu challenges are the highlight of such evenings, after all, though the Jormun won't be taking any responsibility for the first poor soul that decides to usher in a drinking contest.

A small variety of walker games are also available. Jormun children are more than eager to play such games as hide-and-seek or red light, green light, while Connor Murphy will be bringing his Cards Against Humanity deck, for those ready to completely screw with the idea of a fourth wall. There's even a game of Spin the Bottle... except the bottle is being spun overhead like a mace. Being hit by said bottle requires you to do a stupidly ridiculous task, so perhaps it's best to avoid that particular adaptation...

And of course, there's the lightshow.

As mentioned previously, the main show of the evening is the show of brssticca: bursts of magical light beneath the water that will put any fireworks show to shame. The lights are safe to wade and swim through, do keep in mind that the phosphorescent algae tends to cling to the skin. And should you reach into those spiraling, fluorescent nebulae of patterns beneath the surface, some of the configurations of light may abruptly shatter like broken glass.

Additionally, skilled Jormun will be happy to assist those who care to dress up for the event with intricate applications of shellivthiss - a style of waterproof body paint that is not only bright, but luminescent. Something the Jormun may forget to mention, however, is how similar shellivthiss is to henna; should you decide to get all dolled up, except to shine bright light a diamond for weeks to come.

Lastly, those who wanted to bring their own adventures are welcome to as well! Supplying some dope roast? Bringing those sweet, sweet greens? Have some alcohol to supply? All is welcomed by the Jormun - and undoubtedly, your fellow adventurers as well.

[Ardyn jerked his arm out of Gladio's grip folding them to prevent being pulled around again.]

Idiots.

[Here Iggy, have another kiss to demonstrate.]

Shellivthiss [He has to concentrate on saying that right and he might slur just a tiny bit.] 's bioluminescent body paint. Had 'em highlight my ink.

[And then some, obviously, since it's on his lips.]

Lemme paint you? [A glance back at Ardyn, a wink and... yeah waggling his brows at you.] Let us paint you?

I...

[He pauses then, obviously at a loss. The idea's one Ignis never would have thought of. In fact, it seems like a bit of waste since he can't see it himself.

Oh, but he wishes he could see the work Gladio had done...

Still, Gladio and Ardyn can see it, and if it's enough to get the two of them to work together on something instead of bickering, maybe...]

You're not going to draw something embarrassing on me, are you? Because if you do, they will never find your body.

Leave me out of it. [Killjoy.] I've no interest in something like that.

Of course not. Gotta pretty you up.

[If there's any one thing they should be able to agree on it would be this. That Ignis is beautiful and elegant and Gladio wants to spend as much time turning Ignis into the work of art he deserves to be as the Jormun had spent on him.

He looks back at Ardyn, his grin fading into something softer and more sincere, more welcoming like he'd been on Monsun. Clearly to get him to be more amicable they just need to ply him with liquor.]

Please? [No goading, no pushing, no teasing. Just honest, earnest hope.]

Ridiculous.

[The word is soft spoken, as his blind right eye turns in Ardyn and then Gladio's directions before he bows his head in a vain attempt to hide the blush spreading across his cheeks.

Stupid alcohol. That's definitely the cause and nothing else.]

I suppose you'll want me to take my shirt off as well.

Don't make me repeat myself. I want nothing whatsoever to do with this.

[...he's stubborn.]

Do what you want. I don't care.

[Gladio leans on Ignis a little, his free hand coming up to toy with the top button of his shirt, fingers dipping inside to hook around the delicate thread of his necklace.]

Please, babe?

[Then he turns back to Ardyn, a sad smile on his face.]

Stay, at least? C'mon... you think I'm creative enough to do his whole chest on my own?

[Maybe if it means proving he's got something over on Gladio he'll at least stick around.]

[Ignis sighs, hand coming up to carefully untangle Gladio's from his necklace. There's a moment where it seems he's going to refuse, but he then lets go of the Shield's hand and begins to undo the buttons of his shirt. He's getting soft and he knows it, but hopefully the pause will cover it just enough to keep Gladio from getting a big head about it.]

My chest is nothing compared to yours. I'm not sure why you're even bothering.

[Of course, Ignis knows that he's soft on Ardyn too, subtly backing the man's wish to leave even though he would really rather the redhead stay.

Honestly, he's just doomed, isn't he?]

Does it look like I've anywhere else to go, Gladiolus? Even if I tried, you'd just manhandle me like an uncultured tyrant behemoth.

[Sigh.]

Why don't you go on and continue taunting me with your quite frankly revolting affectionate display.

[Is this a win? Did he just... win both of these fights?

Iggy's undoing his buttons and, bitchy as he is, Ardyn just agreed to stay. holy shit

He presses a kiss to Ignis' collarbone as the buttons give him the space to do so and he'll be able to feel just how broad his shit eating grin is. Then he turns back to Ardyn, still smiling, reaching out to try to snag his sleeve, nothing more.]

Come here and sit down, won't you? [Yes, that means closer to Ignis, heaven forbid.]

Gladiolus...

[Though he says the Shield's name softly, there is a warning in his tone. Oh, he didn't miss that grin, just as intended, but if you say one word, lovely petal, the shirt's going back on.

Once he finishes unbuttoning his shirt, Ignis reaches around Gladio and holds a hand out toward Ardyn, his request less pressing than Gladio's.]

Sit with me?

[Ardyn slapped Gladio's hand away from his sleeve, and if looks could kill the Shield would probably be full of swords.] I've had quite enough of you dragging me around--quite enough of you in general, in fact.

[Yellow eyes glanced from Gladio to Ignis, then back again for another sharp glare before he sat down just barely within arm's reach of the advisor.]

[There's a small sound that catches in his throat, something snappish and just as biting as what Ardyn said that he has to forcibly swallow down. He's trying his damnedest and most of it he can ignore but at least some of the venom Ardyn's spent all day spiting has to hit home.

But if he'll sit then at least that gives them somewhere to start.

He takes Ignis hand instead, guiding him to where he should sit and coaxing him back onto the sand with his head in Ardyn's lap.]

Gonna need you to stay still for awhile so hopefully this will be comfy for you.

[Ignis frowns slightly, recognizing Ardyn's reaction for what it is. There was a time all that anger and vitriol was thrown at him in an attempt to push him away. It's harder somehow, seeing it thrown at another, and when Gladio takes his hand, he makes sure to give the Shield's a supportive squeeze. He will have to sit down and talk with Gladio again about all this. It's was easy to agree when Monsun was bringing all their good sides out and before the insults started to fly, but now...

He's jolted out of his thoughts when he realizes just where Gladio is planning for him to rest during this whole thing and stops his descent, tilting his head back at Ardyn,]

Are you okay with this, beloved monster?

[Ardyn sighed in a sharp, irritated breath, not raising any immediate complaints.]

Do as you will.

[At least he's more tolerant of Ignis. He's not sure he could handle sitting back and letting him snarl insults at Iggy the way he has been at Gladio all day. He gives Ignis a moment to get settled, tugging a few things from his pocket, pressing the coconut bowls of paint into the sand to keep them steady and then eyeing his boyfriend.]

It'll be easier to keep this even if I straddle you.

That okay?

[Not even sure who he's asking exactly.]

[As he settles, Ignis slides one of his hands off to the side in an effort to find and take a hold of one of Ardyn's in a silent 'thank you.' He starts a little when Gladio asks his question, face coloring slightly.]

Ah...yes. That's fine.

[Ignis pauses a moment frustrated by his unsteady tone and takes a breath to pull himself together.]

I swear, if you take advantage of having me in this position to tickle me, you will regret it.

[Teasing threats will cover his embarrassment, won't they? Oh Astrals, hopefully Prompto won't stumble by just in time to catch a shot of them like this...]

[Ardyn scowled in silent response to Gladio, bristling with something that he recognized as some odd volatile cocktail of anger and...jealousy? No, that would have been ridiculous.]

[Whether he was conscious of it or not, his hand curled around Ignis' even as he glared daggers at the Shield.]

[Maybe he should have offered Ardyn the paint instead, maybe he should have bowed out when the redhead made it clear that the only complaint he had was Gladio's presence. Maybe he should have just let them have their time together and stopped pushing so fucking hard.

Ardyn takes Ignis' hand, glares up at him and he closes his eyes for a moment, that big goofy grin wavering briefly.

Then he sinks down onto his knees, next to Ignis, not straddling him, not too close to Ardyn, distancing himself a bit to give Ardyn the space he needs to at least accept Ignis' affection. But, distance aside, he does still dip one finger into the pale blue paint, drawing one sweeping curve along his chest, tracing the line of his pec, then drifting up to his collarbone to highlight that as well.]

[Ignis may not be able to see the glares and scowls that are being passed along, but he can feel the tension and he isn't surprised when Gladio kneels in the sand next to him instead of in the position he had originally suggested. The Shield is trying to compromise and Ardyn is trying to do the same in his own odd way. The two ways just don't quite meet in the middle. Not yet.

That is where he comes in.

Without letting go of Ardyn's hand, Ignis shifts his own so he can run his fingers over the back of it in soothing circles. It's actually kind of hard to keep his breathing steady when Gladio starts applying the paint, but he tries his best, speaking softly as he does. Even as he does, his other hand searches out Gladio's knee so he can rest his fingers gently on it.]

Tell me what color he's using?

[The concession seemed to take some edge off of Ardyn's general 'angry coeurl' demeanor, but he didn't seem all that happy. Not that he ever really did, lately.]

...It's blue. Not too far off from your average warding runes, really.

[Lines mimicking the base on the opposite side. The swoop curving up along his chest is off, compared to the other one. The angle is wrong and it curls in a little too much at the top. He bites his lip but says nothing. If this is where he needs to be for Ardyn to be comfortable then so be it.

A soft hum of agreement. He wouldn't have thought to compare it to the old runes but it's something that would still be familiar to Ignis.]

Pretty close to the color of your egg, too.

[A soft smile as he considers where to go next, lifting the bowl to offer the paint out to Ardyn, just in case he wanted to add something.

A beautiful color, then. Hopefully, the canvas does it justice.

[Ignis chuckles softly, keeping the second thought that strikes him to himself. Aside from being a beautiful color, it's also one that denotes safety, and he really hopes someday he can be considered a safe place for both of them.

Confusion clouds his features for a moment when Gladio stops--certainly after all that the Shield has more in mind than just a few lines--but he catches the soft sound of the bowl being extended and realizes what is going on. The fingers on Gladio's knee give it a soft squeeze of appreciate before he speaks.]

Will you mark me as well, beloved?

He gave Gladio a deadpan look that at least wasn't another scowl, the implied 'really?' left unsaid.]
