JUNE AFTERMATH: MAGIC LANTERN STRANGE

Slide the Light Off You
As promised, the evening of the 21st finds the Jormun hosting a party on Ensō's largest beachfront. Near immediately, it should be clear that they've spared absolutely no expense when it comes to showing their story-walker brethren a good time.

Of course, they may also be...showing off a little. The stalls and comfortable seating supplied around multiple firepits appears to be a mishmash of Jormun built contraptions and items requested from the Storyteller- many may be delighted to see the variety of beach cushions and blankets, items the Jormun will be happy to let their story-walker friends take home at the end of the festivities. A veritable smorgasbord of food and drink is also readily available, from the kid-friendly options of brrshavak (a spicy drink with a taste akin to liquified chili pepper) and molkavarr (a rich chocolaty broth) to the alcoholic rakvrhak (a rich wine that tastes oddly plumlike). Do be warned, however, that the last is incredibly potent.

Large slabs of driftwood have been laid out to form impromptu tables, bristling with the Jormun's culinary expertise: fried squid, seaweed wraps, spicy pickled kelp, kebabs of roasted eel, hard-boiled snapling eggs, and so on. The vegetables and meats of the sea have been laid out for all to enjoy, so tuck in!

Throughout the evening the air will be filled with the sound of music, with multiple Jormun eager to show off their skill in instrumentation. Conch-shell horns, carved driftwood flutes, urchin-needle harps, and countless more contraptions engineered by a deep sea-dwelling people fill the air with the most peculiar but nonetheless not unpleasant sound. Most of the bands will be set up in the shallow waters, however, as their instruments are not made to be used in open air - try playing them above the surface of the water at your own risk.

Of course, there's plenty more to entertain even the most difficult of people.

You're Living the Strobe Light
Those interested in proving their strength and skill will be encouraged to enter one of the many tournaments across the shoreline. The tournaments vary, featuring such challenges as play fights with the schlacknorkcvic to prove who is the greatest warrior, timed events to see who can stay on a bucking tigershark for the longest, and even a tourney of brovonkosshk, a board game somewhat similar to chess. Don't see anything you're interested in? Make your own. If you can think it, the Jormun will happily accommodate it - impromptu challenges are the highlight of such evenings, after all, though the Jormun won't be taking any responsibility for the first poor soul that decides to usher in a drinking contest.

A small variety of walker games are also available. Jormun children are more than eager to play such games as hide-and-seek or red light, green light, while Connor Murphy will be bringing his Cards Against Humanity deck, for those ready to completely screw with the idea of a fourth wall. There's even a game of Spin the Bottle... except the bottle is being spun overhead like a mace. Being hit by said bottle requires you to do a stupidly ridiculous task, so perhaps it's best to avoid that particular adaptation...

And of course, there's the lightshow.

As mentioned previously, the main show of the evening is the show of brssticca: bursts of magical light beneath the water that will put any fireworks show to shame. The lights are safe to wade and swim through, do keep in mind that the phosphorescent algae tends to cling to the skin. And should you reach into those spiraling, fluorescent nebulae of patterns beneath the surface, some of the configurations of light may abruptly shatter like broken glass.

Additionally, skilled Jormun will be happy to assist those who care to dress up for the event with intricate applications of shellivthiss - a style of waterproof body paint that is not only bright, but luminescent. Something the Jormun may forget to mention, however, is how similar shellivthiss is to henna; should you decide to get all dolled up, except to shine bright light a diamond for weeks to come.

Lastly, those who wanted to bring their own adventures are welcome to as well! Supplying some dope roast? Bringing those sweet, sweet greens? Have some alcohol to supply? All is welcomed by the Jormun - and undoubtedly, your fellow adventurers as well.

Dagger blinks and a moment later bursts out laughing. Ushara would do more than just burn pieces of him away. She'd go after him with knives and other pointy objects too.

"You know her so well and yet you've never met."

"I've known a few--if you will pardon the pun--fiery ladies in my day, and one thing I learned very quickly was not to unjustly belittle myself in their presence. Not if I didn't want to be feeling my foolishness for the next few days." There is a fondness in Ignis' words as he speaks. He never got to know Crowe all that well, but he'd been around Nyx just enough when he was training to know he needed to watch himself even if he was just joking.

He has no doubt, if he'd gotten to spend more time with Lady Lunafreya, she would have been the same way.

"Haven't really learned that yet myself. I focus more on trying to not say anything that might be misinterpreted and piss her off."

Normally about her or her family. She could be as upset with him over his own self-deprecation as she wanted. That didn't usually bring about as much fire.

"Ah yes, the old adage 'if you have nothing nice to say, then be silent' is harder for some to learn than others," Ignis had learned it early, of course. His role as advisor demanded it, but sometimes--especially around those he trusts--he will let himself slip.

"Dare I ask how many times she's charred you for speaking carelessly?"

[suspecteverything]

"That's an old adage? Never heard it before."

He wasn't being sarcastic or anything either. That was certainly not something his grandmother would have taught him. She lived more by the "Rip them a new one verbally and if that's not enough do it physically" model. Being nice didn't exist.

"A time or two. Generally she's incredibly understanding though."

"Well, we've already determined our worlds are very different. I can't say I'm surprised you haven't heard it." Being a politician means compromising and playing nice when sometimes all he wants to do is bite someone's head off. Ignis supposes he should be grateful that playing nice is even an option for the most part. There are many places--like Dagger's world--where those in power don't even pretend to play nice. They just take what they want.

"That sounds fair. True love doesn't try to change those they care for. They merely deal with them."

A smile blossoms across Jules' face.

"I've changed quite a bit thanks to my wife. Not that she was really planning on changing me. Or... the parts of me that changed weren't what she wanted to change at least."

She would probably prefer him not to get into so much trouble or to make such stupid, life-threatening decisions.

[shatteredlenses]

A gentle smile crosses Ignis' face at that. He might not be able to see Dagger's smile, but he can hear it in the man's voice.

"The best kinds of changes are the ones that come naturally. I dearly wish that Gladio would learn more control over his temper, but it's a part of him and something that I won't try to change," he laughs suddenly. "Besides, when a man that large comes at someone angry, they tend to back down very quickly. Well, you might not for obvious reasons, but most people do."

"They do. At least humans tend to. It works rather the opposite way for Andarians."

Andarians didn't back down for anything. If anyone picks a fight, even another Andarian, the one targeted would certainly finish it. That is the Andarian way. They live to fight.

[shatteredlenses]

"Well, humans are what I have the most experience with," Ignis laughs and then pauses to correct himself. "Actually, humans and daemons, but I'm not certain if daemons should count. Many don't have enough awareness to know they should back down or are too angry to care."

"That's a species I haven't heard of before."

He's well aware of the fact that there are multiple different species in the universe. Still, he's a little bit surprised that he hasn't even heard of this one. There is a pretty huge variety across the Ichidian Universe after all.

"They're not a species, technically," Ignis frowns, trying to think of the best way to describe daemons to someone who isn't from Eos without spending the next few hours doing so. "They are those--animal and human--who are unfortunate enough to be twisted and mutated by the Starscourge. It is a plague that was released in the distant past when one of our gods was driven mad by rage."

This is... definitely nothing like that where Jullien is from. He doesn't really have anything to even compare it to. There's something else in that statement that he finds rather curious though.

"Your gods have actually proven they exist in your world?"

[shatteredlenses]

Oh, most certainly, though they have slept for the most part until recently.

[There is one in specific that he wishes was still sleeping, but that is neither here nor there.]

Were we back on my world, I could take you to where Titan holds the Meteor in his mighty grip, or if you prefer cold to heat, we could go visit where Shiva fell fighting the Imperials. A snow storm has raged there since her death, turning what was once desert into a frozen tundra.

I'm not sure gods would take well to me. Yours or any others.

[He might be a practicing Demurrist now thanks to his wife, but it took a long time for anyone to convince him that the gods cared about anyone. It took even longer for him to believe there was a chance one of them cared a lick about him. At least other than to see how much they could torment him.]

That may be to your benefit when it comes to my gods, honestly. Their favored tend to have...interesting lives.

[As in short, tragic, and painful. Almost every one of them. Except Ardyn, that is, who ended up with long, tragic, and painful instead.]

[What "interesting" means to Ignis flashes through Jules mind and he snorts.]

Sounds like my life. Only they haven't managed to kill me yet.

[Ignis lets out a small, sadly amused sound unaware that Dagger has picked up on a bit more than a normal person would have.]

Well, yes. We all do apparently have far too much experience with people trying to kill us. It's not exactly the kind of life I expected as a child, that is for certain.

You actually had a moment as a child when you didn't think everyone was trying to kill you? You've got a leg up on me then.

[He says it in a way that doesn't make it clear whether or not he's being sarcastic.]

[Considering what he knows of Dagger's life so far, he is going to take that as sarcastic, but with far too much truth tied to it.]

About six years, if you can believe it, and then I became the prince's advisor and everything changed. You know how politics is.

[Especially when war is afoot. Ignis still remembers wondering over and over if he could have helped keep Noctis from being hurt if he'd been with him during the Marilith attack. Could he have helped or would he have died just like everyone else but the young prince had?]

[That would be a good assumption except for that fact that he wasn't being sarcastic at all. He was being quite literally unless you wanted to count the time when he was too young to remember his life being threatened. At six he'd already had to kill his first person.]

I've found that politics are far too different based on the location to make any lump generalizations about them.

[shatteredlenses]

[That response has Ignis tilting his head slightly.]

At the core, isn't politics all about the people with power doing whatever they have to in order to keep that power? There are some exceptions, of course, and some people do better things with that power than others, but in the end that is still the basic goal for them all.

If you want to break it down in an incredibly general way, sure. The issue is more why they want that power. The motives behind it change drastically, and sometimes the goal of keeping power can be willingly relinquished under the right circumstances.

[Not that it happens often, but it can happen. Not everyone rules because they want to rule.]

Well yes, that part I can't argue. Motives are just as numerous as the stars in the sky are and that is just talking about the logical ones. There are so many illogical ones it makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

[Ignis shakes his head at the thought and then laughs.]

Not really the kind of thing we should be talking about on a night like this, is it though? I apologize for bringing up such a serious topic.

Didn't exactly ruin my mood or anything.

[He'd been in a pretty dark place mentally before Ignis showed up. Besides, discussing politics gave Jules something to think about besides missing his family.]
