Can you teach me?

[All time spent with the Drifter is something to cherish and she doesn't want to particularly let go of this chance to be with them. She assumes they'll amble off to map this weird island soon enough-might as well keep them around and know they're safe for as long as she can until that time comes.]

Do you get five strikes? Do you say 'blackjack'?
hyperlit: +sprite (MY STRONGEST POTIONS)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-04 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[They have no idea what a “blackjack” is but are not opposed to someone saying it, at any time they prefer.]

10 goals wins
we have no goals

[Perhaps they ought to make some...they’re unused to having to set the game up on their own.]
catpiper: (the end came for my ass)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-10 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
[Say no more, she's got this!! She can make 'goals', unless the goal is surviving to adulthood and that's not on the docket today. Without a word, she turns on her heel and ambles off to do whatever gremlins do to make games playable.

Which boils down to finding sticks, apparently. They aren't good enough to be Drifter weapons, but they're fine for soccer, probably. She drops both to the ground, directly next to each other, which is going to make for a short game if they play this way.
]

Okay, I found our bases. The goals.
hyperlit: (◈ ᴏᴠᴇʀᴡʜᴇʟᴍɪɴɢ ᴡᴏɴᴅᴇʀs ᴀɴᴅ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Hmmm. The Drifter surveys that briefly, before deciding to make a few adjustments - staking one stick into the ground, then another, a few feet apart from one another, and then doing the same at the opposite end of the very loosely defined "field."]

[They survey their handiwork. The dimensions are arbitrary, but they don't have to be exact for a beginner.]

goals
catpiper: (orla orla hypothesis)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-12 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[#Renapproved

And from there, she gathers the ball needs to be kicked towards the sticks. Does it matter which goal? Probably not. Victory is in the eye of the beholder and she aims to win.
]

You can kick first.
hyperlit: (◈ ᴀ ᴘᴏɪsᴏɴᴇᴅ ᴍᴀᴅᴅᴇɴᴇᴅ ʜᴏᴍᴇʟᴀɴᴅ)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-12 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[That seems unfair, given her diminutive size and the fact that she has yet to actually play a game of soccer in her life, but the Drifter nonetheless complies, albeit with considerably less force than they would usually. While they're more prone to straight-up slamming into the ball with their blade and launching it into the sky at full tilt, the Drifter instead gently knocks up against it with the side of their foot, sending it rolling across the grass at a leisurely bump-tumble.]

[What a thrilling game of soccer!]
catpiper: (shoujo professional sparkles)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-13 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[This dirty cheater runs after the ball with more speed than necessary, given they didn't kick it that far, and picks it up with both hands. And as she heaves it into the air, ready to throw it across the freaking field, she slowly remembers this is a kicking game. No throwing.

And you know. Rules are for losers, but she'll follow the few she knows. She's considerate enough to carry the ball directly to the goal, set it down in front of her, and gently kicks it past the stick.
]

Blackjack!
hyperlit: (ill scoot until im fucking pregnant)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-13 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Drifter shakes their head, too bemused to be disappointed or put off. Sometimes they forget; she is not merely a child, but a child with far fewer life experiences than most. They are used to children who are brutally competent, who can handle things like bombs, or understand complex concepts like the end of an entire world.]

[They are less used to this.]

you are supposed to use your feet
catpiper: (orla orla hypothesis)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-15 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I did!

[She perks up cheerfully, thankfully not holding a bomb or the fate of the world in her hands. Because she'd cheat to the very end or allow the death of x amount of people to happen because she's scared. That's fine.

Either way, she did kick when it counted most-at the very end and she eagerly runs up to Drifter, holding the ball out for them to grab.
]

Now you run up and kick it past the stick when you get close.

[She's the expert now?? Apparently??]

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-15 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
not your hands

[gosh kid don’t you know a thing about soccer :/ ]

[Evidently not, which merely means they’ll have to teach her such arbitrary rules as: you can’t use your hands, but weapons are 100% okay as long as you don’t hurt anyone with them.]
catpiper: (gonna drown myself in pudding)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-17 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[Bend to her unerring cheating law that is in no way contradictory or wrong.

No hands period?? Terrible. But that's fine. She can accept that adults need to put games on hard mode and she plops the ball in front of their feet. Go ahead peanut.
]

Okay, we'll try again. It's still your turn.

['We'll'. Like it wasn't just Her messing up.]
hyperlit: (ill scoot until im fucking pregnant)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-17 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
there are no turns

[THEY DID NOT EXPLAIN THIS VERY WELL AT ALL, HM???]

[They should be more bemused than they are. They’re not accustomed to a child’s leaps in logic. But they can accept that some people have never passed their time over a game of soccer, outrageous as it is to consider.]
catpiper: (you finally came into my house)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-19 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
[This game is bullshit.

Or rather, filled with many difficult rules like don't use your hands or no turns and goals. When do you hit 21? Maybe it's like tag. Either way, she's determined to learn. Because Drifter likes this game, she's going to figure the methods to their gaming madness.

So. Since there are no turns, she looks to the ball in front of them and kicks it far to the side.
]
hyperlit: (i am going into battle and i want)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-19 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Now she's getting the hang of it. Of course, she won't truly understand the genuine Soccer Mood unless she is trampled by a relentless child, plowed over through the dirt while the ball sails heavily past and slams into her goal ten times in quick succession.]

[The Drifter is, thankfully, a much gentler opponent than soccer kid.]

[They streak to catch the ball with the side of their foot and bat it in her direction, mostly to see where she plans to kick it next.]
catpiper: (what the fug)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-21 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Look, Ren's a veritable baseball expert as far as this island's concerned. There are no professional players anymore-Batter's gone. It's just her. She can pitch with all the ferocity a noodley armed teenage girl can, but kicking? The coordination required for this is absurd. But she's going to win.

She stops the ball with her hands, removes them once it's still lest she get another gentle reminder of the stupid no hands rule and lines her foot up to kick the shit out of it.

The problem is she can't beat Drifter with ordinary, mortal methods. They're fast, strong and have soccer knowledge on their side, so she. Points up to the sky. Wow, look at that!!!
]
hyperlit: (it's fucking sick)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-21 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[They’ll give it to her: they weren’t expecting that. And when she points skyward, their instinct is not to assume deception. Their hand falls across the hilt of their blade and they dart a look upward, scanning the uniform, cloudless blue for the potential danger. A pterax? Another firebird?]

[...or literally nothing at all?]

[The Drifter looks back down. Wait a sec.]
catpiper: (but damn i look good)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-22 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
[One day, she might look back on this moment and feel sorry for her sinful actions against a precious drifter, who only wanted to play a game of soccer.

That day is far, far into future and there was no rule against cheating anyway? It's fine. When they look back towards her, the ball has mysteriously vanished from her gremlin kick zone.

Because she kicked it while they were distracted and it's currently moving towards the goal. She's not far behind it.
]
hyperlit: (i dont know how to fucking please you)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
[The Drifter...could attempt to rob her of that point, and possibly succeed, but they're the one that fell for the child's silly jape, so as far as they're concerned, they deserve to suffer for that crime. They simply stand there and watch with their arms folded across their chest when she goes bumbling for the goal with the ball.]

little pup

[They shake their head, but the corners of their eyes have crinkled with amusement.]
catpiper: (if i was one with the earth)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-24 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[The ball goes flllllying past the stick and she throws her arms in the air in celebration, excited as all hell because she managed to get a point! Against the Drifter! In a game they already knew!

In-freaking-credible. Cheating works. That's the takeaway here.
]

Look, I did it! That's ten points!

[She kicks the ball back towards them and says-]

Make me look somewhere else and you can get a point too!
hyperlit: (◈ ᴏᴠᴇʀᴡʜᴇʟᴍɪɴɢ ᴡᴏɴᴅᴇʀs ᴀɴᴅ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-24 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
1 point

[A gentle correction, but a firm one. Don’t think you can get away with inflating your score, you rascal. There’s only so much cheating one can allow in one game of soccer.]

goals are 1 point
catpiper: (brmbrm with your mew)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-25 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Spiritually, it's ten points per goal, but she can relent to their unerring soccer law for this one thing.]

Okay, it's one point.

[For now!!! She'll work her way to ten one day.]

You have to get one too.
hyperlit: (but i'll have mine)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Ren, you melt their heart. They love you, deeply and earnestly. But by god you have no idea how competitive sports work at all do you.]

will you try and stop me

[It's partially a taunt and partially an instruction. You have to try to stop them, Ren. Please.]
catpiper: (at 10:15 in the morning kids tequatl)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-28 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[That's the big q of the day, isn't it Drifter? Will she? There's a vivid memory of Sai reminding her she has to keep the other player from scoring because that's how baseball works. But only baseball.]

No?

[And then-]

Yes!

[Soccer is kind of like baseball and after some mental deliberation, she eventually falls for the taunt because she's like five. Here she comes!! Don't use your hands or she'll call them the heck out!!]
hyperlit: (i dont know how to fucking please you)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-05-28 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Score.]

[Metaphorically, anyway. They've yet to score against her in earnest, but they're still not sure if they ought to. Will she be upset, should she lose? She's not exactly the soccer kid, and the Drifter has been rather competitively obsessed with beating them at their own game for some time now.]

[They elect to move slowly, at first, watching her with something that could almost be called approval as they bat the ball across the field as an assuredly decreased pace.]
catpiper: (they can't study me)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-05-31 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Real talk-she fully expects to lose to them at a game they've played many times and whose concepts she's just starting to grasp. It's not going to bother her because their victory will be something to celebrate, but she'll practice and come at them with the force of ten thousand suns when the Time Is Right. And probably cheat her way to another point.

That's how it is.

She goes after the ball, trying to find an opening to kick it out from their path. It's harder when you can't trick someone!! Gosh!!
