The Birds: Talk 'Til Dawn
As promised, the Storyteller has withdrawn to see your path to the island you chose. It is for this reason that their presence may be somewhat less evident than usual, even at the site of their temple. It may take some time to reach them whenever you should require something or another, and it seems that they might not be paying attention to what is occurring on the island at all.
This is not necessarily a good thing.
After the firebird's flight in January, the sun has assumed its regular position in the skies of LifeAftr, warming and lighting the archipelago with a reassuring regularity following the horror of the continuous night. And with the Storyteller's intervention, a fresh wave of cloud has come to blanket the floating islands that travelers last month had the brief opportunity to explore. However, come March, little dollops of gray-white may occasionally come streaking from the sky like ashen comets; the firebird's sheer distance from LifeAftr has delayed their arrival somewhat, but it has come nonetheless.
LifeAftr's sun has begun to molt.
The phoenix's fiery red plumage is more of a dulled-out gray by the time it drifts down to the sands and treetops of Ensō, but that's not the only peculiar quality about it. No; the real strangeness is the fact that the molted feathers aren't really feathers at all.

What is notable is their rather unpredictable capacity to burst into flame. Oftentimes they'll simply regenerate from the ashes and begin the cycle anew, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's pleasant for whoever might be nearby - or if someone happens to be holding them.
In fact, it seems that the risk of this occurring seems significantly higher when someone initiates physical contact. At least now you'll stay toasty!
The Bugs: You Would Not Believe Your Flies
Come the night, the island has one more surprise for you, dear adventurers. Your new avian addition to Ensō's ecosystem sleeps during the night, much like the sun in the sky above, and thus is not much use for lighting up the dark. However, something else is. Something that perhaps many of you might recognize.

All new arrivals will awake with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!
As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.
Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

Ritsu Sakuma | Ensemble Stars
[The story teller was pretty vague with all of this here. Though Ritsu is still kind of assuming it is a dream to some degree. Even now as he sits on the ground, in his last performance outfit, going through his new bag, he has to wonder why him especially? There were much better choices for a protag than him...yet here he is. As he digs in the bag he hears a loud peep neck to him and sees the chick. It's the same chick he discovered earlier, he is on the fence about keeping it but it does seem to have developed a fondness for him.
When he reaches out to pat it he watches it burst into flames and pulls back. It was warm though. Giving up his investigation Ritsu moves to lay next to the new flaming chick as he drifts to sleep. It was nice enough for a nap.]
good night...
The Bugs: You Would Not Believe Your Flies
[With night came the time for vampires to thrive. After napping most the day in different spots, Ritsu finally awakes fully. With a long stretch and a yawn he looks up to see fireflies. They are a lot brighter than home though but it was nice. Standing he catches one of the slow bugs and looks at it in his hand before smiling at it.]
Cute. [Holding his palm up he lets the bug go before grabbing the handle of his bag and starting to pull it. While he does have the strength to carry it that was a lot of work... Besides his clothes are a little much.
With a low groan he watches the fireflies swarm as he makes his way to his new home.]
if 10 million fire eyes
[His voice is as gentle as ever, but looking at Eichi might require a double take right now. His Starfes uniform is completely charred, his gloves have been shoved into a pocket of his coat that's now missing most of its sleeves, leaving some burn marks on his forearms. His cheeks are a little crisped, as well, and the front of his vest and his cravat are completely ruined.
Somehow, despite that, he's up and walking around.]
It really is Ritsu-kun, then? [But in that sort of costume... He hasn't seen it. Is he also from after Christmas? This is unfair.]

Huh, the ground feels weird all of a sudden. Just what had she stepped on during her trek back to her shack?]
Oh dear. [She “exclaims” flatly, as she steps on the mass again without looking down, as if to confirm its existence. Step, squish.] This is... mystifying. [Step, step.] What is this…?

Eichi Tenshouin | Ensemble Stars! | OTA
[This isn't the first time Eichi has messed with a wild animal. Things went a lot smoother at home when a lion got loose from its cage before his performance and he managed to give it an entire speech about being king, but this place just can't let him win, can it? First those monkeys with the coconut guns, and now, this baby chick that's so deceivingly ugly-cute...]
You're not as cute as the "chocobo" chick I met upon first arriving here, but they say the ugly duckling can turn into a beautiful swan... ♪ Don't get discouraged, little one.
[Really, he's trying to be nice, crouching in front of the baby that seems so lost, so scared, far from anyone that could care for it. But just as he's reaching for it, a spark hints, and he pulls back his arms in reflex. The chick completely erupts into flames, torching Eichi's outfit in such a considerable way that he's instantly without sleeves on his coat or knees on his pants, stumbling backwards. He definitely needs some assistance.]
Karma is a bitch
[Once the fire is put out, Eichi is a mess and unable to fix it. His sleeves are gone, the knees of his pants are ashy holes, the front of his vest is ruined and revealing in ways he doesn't want to talk about, and his cravat isn't much of a cravat anymore. As if that weren't enough, he has burn marks on skin— his knees, some of his legs, his hands and forearms, and his cheeks, down to part of his jaw.
The sun is setting, and it's too chilly for him to be out, but he's crouched by the edge of the water, not sure that he even wants to return to that shack and deal with any smart remarks that might come about this. Struggling to see his reflection in the water, he frowns, thinking that he's by himself, and touches a burned cheek carefully, wincing lightly as he does.
Maybe if Keito were here, he'd scold him and yell while guiding him though the right way of helping this heal properly. Or Wataru, he could work some magic and make him feel better in an instant. Tori and Yuzuru would be welcome faces, one calm and collected while the other frets. But none of them are here, and Eichi drops his hand away from his face with a frown, hugging his knees a little tighter.]
It became cold so quickly... [The sun only just set, and fireflies will begin to gather shortly. Startle him too much while he's talking to himself and he might fall into the water, though.]
Wildcard
[Of course, you're free to run into him anywhere else, too! Like on Islet 2, where he's setting up yet another tin can phone tripping hazard with fishing wire.]
HELL
Then the bird exploded. Ah. He probably hurt its feelings. Who knew that phoenixes had the heart of a maiden? Really, he should be more delicate when speaking to children... While Takane won't deny that he had it coming, it certainly does look painful for him. She's not sure how she can help, but she'll try to anyway...!!
She approaches, with her usual deadpan full-name greeting:]
Eichi Tenshouin. [Holding her hand out dramatically, as if giving out a royal decree, she flatly says in gratuitous English:] Stop, drop, roll.
[Most helpful advice.]

Guzma || Pokemon Sun and Moon - OTA
[Ever since the return of the sun, Guzma'a been taking time out of his schedule (working on his home, hunting/gathering food and supplies, and training his pokemon) to nap outside in the warmth of the sun. He hangs his hammock between two shady palms and just rests. BY the time he starts to feel the chill of night, he hears a soft buzz by his ear as well. Swatting at it lazily, Guzma yawns and removes his sunglasses from his face as he stretches i his hammock and scratches at his stomach - sort of like a very sleepy bear. He sniffs loudly, then his vision stares to focus as the world comes into view.
There's still enough light to see the world around him, but it's obvious that it's just after sundown - and the last light is only granted perhaps a few more minutes in the world of the waking. Regardless, there are still a handful of glittering, glowing dots in the air floating around him and Guzma blinks before he sits up slowly. What in the world? The glow reminds him of Volbeat, but way...way tinier. It couldn't actually be a bug, right? Nah, the insects here on the island were immense and pretty terrifying, actually. These things were smaller even that a Joltik!
He slides his legs off the hammock rattling another dozen or so that had been resting on the bottom of it and they buzz and blink signals to each other in the dimming light. They're like tiny little embers, and despite himself, Guzma reaches out his hands and very gently scoops one right out of the air. They're pretty slow fliers, and the task isn't at all difficult. Cupping his hands, he peers inside and...it is. It's a bug. The smallest bug he's ever seen, and its lighting up it abdomen with that yellow-green light.
A peaceful, almost affectionate smile spreads on his face as he opens his hands and gives the tiny insect a little nudge with one finger, to startle it enough to fly away. Watching it join the others, Guzma swings his feet a little off his hammock and sighs softly. He looks perhaps the most relaxed anyone's ever seen him, and even as he takes down his hammock from the trees to bring back inside his and Luna's home, he does so...very slowly, stopping quite a few times to admire the glittering creatures around him.]
Dang, guys, coulda used all y'all a few weeks ago, yeah? Don't got nothing to give you, though... [Not like he has any sugar to mix into some water for them. Ah well, the bugs looks content enough, and he's noticing that as darkness falls, there's way more of them than he first thought.] Better not cause any trouble, homies, would hate to do any of y'all in.
[He says, shaking out his hair and setting another five or six flying from the nest of white.]

Wade Wilson | Deadpool (Marvel 616) | OTA
Nights in LifeAftr were apparently no different.
He's taking a stroll through the steadily darkening wilderness when he suddenly sees a flash of light out of the corner of his eye. Another pinpoint of illumination winks into existence directly in front of him, and it's only until a third light brightens somewhere to his left that he realizes what he's seeing.
Fireflies. After three years of no wildlife to speak of in Haven, he'd almost forgotten these bugs even existed.
The sight of the insects causes a broad, disbelieving smile to cross his face, and he reaches up to trap one gently in his cupped hands, to prove to himself that this isn't just a hallucination brought on by eating the wrong batch of the local fauna. The creature doesn't seem to mind that it's been caught, lazily crawling around on the palm of Wade's glove and giving off pulses of light every now and again. Suddenly its wings spread, and it once again takes to the skies, Wade watching its movements with an almost childlike delight until he can see it no more.
Anyone daring to venture out will spot a strangely-dressed man armed to the teeth with weapons, darting to catch the brightly-lit bugs and generally acting like a kid a third of his age.]

Terra | Final Fantasy 6 | OTA
The birds were nothing like the baby chocobo that Prompto had shown her - but they were just as cute, if not more adorable in a fashion. Being that she was far more fond of animals than people, she naturally gravitated towards one, kneeling to gather it into her hands gently.
"How adorable..." she smiled faintly, being very, VERY careful with how she touched something that looked rather frail.
Until it suddenly burst into flame, startling her into letting out a small shriek of both surprise and pain, before she hastily put the bird down, in order to move back from the flames - the burns weren't TOO severe, but she wasn't exactly protected from such - and their flames were far different from when she called Fire and held it in her hand. Her hands and arms both were singed, but fortunately she knew a healing spell to take care of the worst of it. So as she silently called the healing energy into her injury, she gave a betrayed, hurt look to the little bird, "... I suppose you don't like me..."
Bugs
Fireflies are definitely something she's never seen before -- of course that isn't saying much when she had no memories, was it? But regardless, she was fascinated and enchanted by the luminescent bugs, laughing softly when they would drift near or around her, or holding perfectly still when one alighted on her hand or shoulder, just motes of light flitting here and there. The sight of them brings her such joy that she forgets herself and glances towards the nearest person, "They're so pretty~, what are they?"
Birds
Mickey began to walk over, with the evidence of his own bird-blowup on his soot-stained face and a very small singed marks on his hat. But he was taking it in stride - after all, compared to the real horrors of the island, this was pretty much nothing.
"You all right?"

Amaterasu || Ōkami - OTA
[It doesn't take much for Ammy to find the peeping bundle of wrinkled skin and soot among the pile of ashes, and her noses through the cinders until she finds the source of all the commotion. The tiny creature squeaks at her as it blearily peers up at the white wolf, wriggling forward towards her as she pushes away the cinders from the little chick. She looks around, wondering if its parents could be close, but after a closer look, she feels a very familiar presence coming from this little thing. It's so tiny, like that of an ember, but she knows it well. After all, it's the same sort of warmth and radiance she emits as well.
As Ammy cleans the chick's grey plumage of soot (eugh, what a nasty flavor - like an ash tray!!), she sets it oh so gently upon her reflector, where it can stay nice and warm as the rainbow-hued flames of Solar Flare billow from the underside. It should provide a soft of nostalgic comfort - like that of its parent - or so Ammy hopes. She trots slowly about with the chick positioned just so, slowing her gait when it starts to cry a bit too loud. She has no more bags of seed to feed the thing, and that may not even be good for one so tiny... Ah, what to do? If it's a god like her, then it doesn't necessarily need to eat...m-maybe, but she still does, even if there's no actual benefit to it.....other than food tastes FREAKING AWESOME.
Maybe someone on the island can help? The humans here have already begin to coop up those other birds, maybe they'll know how to care for these one as well? If anything, Ammy can at least get it some water. It may be thirsty after being bathed in so much ash.
Either way, the white wolf is heading towards where most people converge, with her little peeper - whom she's almost definitely going to be calling Moegami - snoozing peacefully on her back.]
---
Hotaru Koi
[It's beautiful...what wonders night can bring, for those that stay up long enough to behold them. Thought she is a being of the sun, Ammy oft relishes the glimmers of light that twinkle so in the velveteen blanket of darkness. As she walks along the shores of the islets, on her usual patrol (Moegami safely tucked away in a den she'd dug out some time ago), she stops to watch the fireflies dance through the air, creating patterns in the air with their flickering rumps.
Try as she may to continue on her path, the gorgeous display of lights is far too much for her, and she lays down on the sand by the beach, listening to the waves crash onto the shore as the foam hisses on the went sand, and the fireflies blink and buzz to one another. It's a tranquil scene, and Ammy yawns loudly, but will herself awake, despite the relaxing feeling wafting over her like the ocean breeze. Eventually, she begins to make a game of the fireflies light, trying to create the brush gods' constellations from their glittering lights, and scoring herself doe every time she can do so before the lights die.
She doesn't manage many points, but it's a fun little game she plays nonetheless, and it makes her enjoy the beauty of these insects for that much longer. As she stands, and shakes off her fur, she rouses a whole lot of them that had perched on her. She wheezes of a soft, canine chuckle and sighs softly. Ah, she's always been fond of little, glowing bugs... Lifting her head to look up at the stars instead, Ammy wonders, idly, how Issun is doing. How they're all doing back in Nippon. Are they happy? Are they well? Are they looking at the same sort of sky right now, filled with bright stars and beautiful fireflies? She prays for it, and smiles as a star streaks across the sky. Heh...not even her doing this time. ♥]
hotaru koi
Takane will take up her own spot on the shore and look up at the sky. Ah, is that...?]
A falling star, hm? A most fortuitous moment, indeed. I sincerely hope that the wish you made is made true, my esteemed peer. [She speaks to the wolf like she were talking to an old friend, as if there is no reason why she shouldn't have a normal, intellectual conversation with one.]

A little bit of fire never hurt
It takes some time before Jullien returns to the nest, another chick nestled in his gloved hands. He doesn't appear to react at all when it explodes. The first chick he rescued taught him enough. Now he wears his combat gloves. It's one of the benefits of flying space ships meant for battle. Their combat clothing is relatively flame retardant. He settles the little chick in the circle of rocks with the others. Hopefully it will keep them all safe.]
Takane Shijou | The iDOLM@STER | OTA
[Takane was incredibly disappointed upon waking up to discover that the chick she was caring for on That Other Island did not follow her to the physical realm of Enso. However, her hopes were quickly raised when she started hearing familiar chirping outside. Even when she started hearing ominous popping and yelling in the distance, and also witnessing one of her friends catch fire as she explored the island, she still had high hopes of reclaiming one of those mystifying creatures.
Which brings us to this moment, where she finally manages to get her hands on one of these chicks. She stares blankly at the ugly-cute baby bird nestled on her cupped palms, utterly enchanted by it. That doesn't last, though, as Takane begins noticing her hands getting warm rather quickly. This is beginning to feel familiar---]
Ah...
[Having her hair caught on fire in Mu made her very reactive towards these chicks. Fool her once, shame on the chick. Fool her twice, shame on herself. Not missing a beat, she tosses the chick upward. As if on cue, the instant she turns away and uses a hand to toss her hair, the chick explodes mid-air. Takane vacantly stares into the distance, a grim mix of guilt and disappointment in her eyes.]
Again, an explosion.
It was never meant to be.
I shall bid farewell.
[On the final line of her impromptu haiku, she solemnly holds out her arms, as if she were trying to embrace the sky. Ashes rain down upon her.
As much as she really wanted to keep a chick, she has decided a third attempt was not worth the risk of being set on fire again.]
The Night's Aria
[It was a normal occurrence for Takane to be out and about at night, especially when the moon was so lovely this evening. More so when she noticed the myriad fireflies that began clouding the island once night fell... they almost looked like stars had descended down from the sky and began floating about in the air. A breathtaking sight. It was for these reasons that she felt that tonight was a good time for practice and keeping her skills sharp. In the event she was returned back to Tokyo, she knew being stuck on a supernatural remote island would not be an excuse for falling behind in training.
During the middle portion of nighttime, Takane can be found in the vicinity of the Storyteller's altar. Moving along to music only she could hear from the depths of her memory, she's singing a medley of ballads that she believed were fitting for the atmosphere that surrounded her. With fireflies rotating between resting in or floating away from her silver hair as she practiced her dance steps and songs, it wouldn't be unreasonable to mistake her for a fairy sighting. Or maybe a spooky ghost. It's always in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?!]

Ignis Scientia | Final Fantasy XV | OTA
[The problem with letting his bludrocs just hunt for food as they wander free on the islet is that eventually they will make their way to his garden and that is something Ignis can't let happen. Granted, there isn't much in there they are going to want, but with both plants and bugs in shorter supply, he knows it's only a matter of time before the inevitable happens. He's just gotten things straightened out for replanting. The last thing he wants is to have to start over again.
To that end, while they have been working on repairing the cottage, they've also been planning on an enclosure for the bludrocs and whatever other animals they gather. Prompto may not want to part for very long from Coco, but his chocobo will need a place of his own soon enough. At the moment, the proposed area is mapped out with rocks so Ignis can clear and try to level it out before they start building some kind of structure.
Honestly, he first registered the cheeping a while back, but brushed it off as the local birds starting to return to their daily activities after the Darkness. The sounds are coming from more than one direction after all, and obviously that is a good sign. The quicker the wildlife returns to normal, the better for them.
Of course, when he feels an object with a downward trajectory skim over his arm and then land not far in front of him, he pauses, running a gloved hand over the warmth said object left against his skin in passing.
Then he hears the cheep.]
Goodness, I don't think that's how you learn to fly, little one.
[Ignis moves toward the sound slowly not wanting to startle the bird with his approach. Is it hurt? Healing humans he has experience with, but healing a broken wing? That's a different story.
Once he gets as close to the small creature as he feels he safely can, he pulls off one grove and reaches for it, fingers eventually finding soft feathers and coming away with...]
Ash?
[He rubs his fingers together, bringing them to his nose for a smell. Yes, that is definitely ash and the poor creature is covered in it. That's can't be good for it.]
Well, this certainly isn't how I was planning on spending my afternoon, but lets get you cleaned up, shall we?
[Despite the dirty job and the fact Ignis is almost positive he's going to be getting ash on his face and in his hair, he can't help but smile when the bird cheeps happily and snuggles against his hand.]
March 6th Onward: Birds of a Feather, Tent Together (Islet 4; The Tent, Nearish to Shack 1)
Don't cheep at me, Rory. Need I remind you that you wanted down?
[Ignis moves toward the answering cheep, tapping his cane near it and then waiting as the small bird moves up it and into the satchel at his hip, the one that should be carrying supplies but now is apparently a small bird's nesting ground, said bird taking it upon herself to burn beyond use the few things that had been in it before.
Lesson learned. Ignis now makes sure to keep the bag open and empty so Aurora can snuggle into whenever she gets the urge.
Honestly, he's probably moving too quickly around the tent for her to follow after she got tired of sunning herself. Unfortunately, he has no idea how long Asch has been gone nor does he know how the tent has been keep up. He's got a lot of organizing and maintaining to do in the redhead's absence. The tent is far too valuable a resource to let it become neglected. As are the few cabbage batch squids that linger around it.
Besides, it helps him keep his mind off the pain of having yet another friend disappear from this place.]
5th, cottage 2
[I guess this is how all their threads start... though they've been doing this for a while offscreen, to put things on record, so Ignis could probably guess what this is about.
Phoenix removal is what it's about. The faint smell of smoke lingers on Laurent's clothes, stronger than the ever-present smell of horse, and it -in a sense -complements him. After all he wears sharp unapproachable blacks and once looked perpetually hostile, and the smell of smoke conveys that kind of image. This is the visual memo you’ve missed, Ignis. The blonde’s voice is terse- Ignis can recognise it as displeasure of some sort. Maybe he doesn't like birds? That's probably it.]
Another phoenix landed in my paddock. Help get rid of it.

Atsuko "Akko" Kagari | Little Witch Academia | OTA
[The small gray chicks falling from the sky catch Akko's attention immediately. They're cute, for one. They're helpless and in need of protection, for another. She is determined to take one under her metaphorical wing from the moment she sets eyes on them.]
[The first attempt does not go well.]
[She stoops down beside one of the baby birds and smiles in a way that she hopes comes across as welcoming. Stretching out her arms in a sign of open friendliness, Akko motions for the little chick to come closer.]
Hey, little guy! My name is Akko. I have a feeling we could be good friends, don't y-
[The surprising thing is not the pain, but the rush of heat preceding it. It knocks her back on her butt, sends her scrambling towards the shore, towards cool water. She cups water in her hands to splash on her brow, just to make sure nothing on her face blisters, but freezes. Her reflection stares back at her incredulously. She's missing half an eyebrow.]
[Akko whirls on the bird, shouting across the beach at the little ball of flames.]
What the heck!? You can't just go exploding in peoples' faces like that, you could hurt somebody!
Bugs
[As the sun sets, Akko finds herself by the shore, soaking her blistered hands in the cooling waters of the sea. On her shoulder is a little gray chick, nipping at the charred tips of her ponytail absently. Despite her clothes being covered in blackened burn marks and the complete lack of eyebrows. She hums cheerfully as she does this, apparently un-bothered by her injuries since she came out of the ordeal with a baby bird friend.]
[The dimming of the sun brings about pinpricks of light over the water. Only a couple at first, so faint she's not sure she's really seeing them, but the longer she stares the more join in. The fireflies are fat and slow, blinking lazy messages to each other as they drift along. Akko gasps softly, staring wide-eyed as hundreds of the little dots appear all around her. Had they really been there the whole time? On her shoulder, Comet chirps and coos at the passing orbs of light. It's a relief he doesn't try to eat any of them, Akko notes, pressing her cheek against the chick's soft flank.]
[Really today hasn't been all that bad, despite the multiple explosions and dulling pain. She got a new friend. It was worth it.]

She's idly following a little group of them around (she has no idea if she's even following the same bunch of fireflies, honestly) and she's so distracted that she comes perilously close to just tripping over poor Akko and her new buddy. ]

Shouto Todoroki | My Hero Academia
[When Shouto wakes up after the Storyteller little chat, he's still kind of assuming it's a dream. This is, after all, a kind of bizarre that just doesn't Happen.
But he opens his eyes to a beach, everything he had on him completely waterlogged, and with a new backpack filled with junk. It's. Well. It's certainly happening.
And on top of that, there are birds dropping from the sky and bursting into flame, as if this needed to be any stranger.]
You should be careful.
[There are burns on his fingers from the first time he ran into this particular bird, which had seemed hellbent on getting cozy in his hodgepodge of supplies. Eventually, it had seemed to form the impression that Shouto's attempts to shoo it away were an attempt to bond, and now it's gotten attached to the boy.
He also feels a little off, talking to the chick like it can understand him, but it does make him feel a little less alone.]
I can't replace any of this.
[Most of the things he's been left with are flammable, bird, and he wants to be able to survive.]
bug bug bug
[Night comes and the bird seems to be tuckered out. It's curled up in Shouto's lap, and he's content to leave it there for now.
It's been quite the day. From running into his father again at the lessons to waking up on a strange island in what very might well be an entirely different world, nothing about this day has gone any sort of way he was expecting. It's like life took a left turn and now he just has to deal with it.
But so far it...it's not bad. The fireflies are big and fat and lazy, and the atmosphere is almost comfortable. Almost, because he's still stranded and he's still not quite sure what he can do about it. He can't just stay here, but he doesn't know enough to say that being here is necessarily a bad thing. Or, again, if it's actually really real. For all he knows it could just be some sort of...quirk-induced hallucination or illusion. Still, for now, he's going to put those thoughts on the backburner as he finds a tree to lean against.
He's not quite relaxed enough to fall asleep, keeping a watch on anyone who wanders by, but he doesn't seem keen to actually get up and move even as the night gets colder and darker.]

Physical touch is what sets them alight.

Crow | Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon | OTA
[So despite his namesake, Crow has never actually held a bird before: they usually stayed out of arm's reach of him back at the amusement park, and honestly, that was fine with him. Personal space and all that, he gets it.
Still, seeing this little thing moving around in a pile of ash gets his interest, so soon he's reaching out to pick it up and get a closer look at.]
Huh... you're kind of filthy, but I guess that makes sense, seeing as you were just--
[And then the bird suddenly bursts into flame in his hands here, and because Crow can't actually feel pain, his reaction isn't to immediately put it down. Instead...]
What in the... that... is so cool...
[Though, maybe someone should have him put it down before his gloves and clothing catch on fire and burn up from that...]
The Bugs
[This is not the first time that Crow has ever seen fireflies before, what with how frequent they were sometimes in the empty fields back home... still, these ones are pretty darn bright by comparison. He can't help but stop and stare, even sitting on the ground here with one of those birds he's managed to befriend sleeping in his scarf. He watches until he brings his hands up and... there! He brings his hands around it quickly to try to catch it.]
Got one!
[You sure did, Crow. Got it hard enough to... accidentally kill it from the force of your hands coming around it, whoops.]
... Damnit.
[Maybe someone should teach him proper firefly catching techniques if he wants to hold one in his hands.]
Bugs
You're going to ruin them by trying to catch them.

[Muffet was vaguely curious about the little firebirds at first, but decided they were best left alone after the first time she saw one randomly burst into a flurry of fire.]
[Unfortunately, once the island starts booming with the sound of far-off explosions, she realized that many of her fellow castaways didn't share the sentiment.]
[Not liking the possibility of wildfire, she decided to take matters into her own hands- all six of them. That's why, if you're having an unfortunate avian encounter somewhere today, you may here a brief 'Sorry about this' before having a pot full of water unceremoniously dumped on you and the surrounding flames.]

Commander Shepard | Mass Effect | OTA (will match formats!)
[Falling fire feathers from the sky absolutely catches Shepard's attention pretty quickly. When she comes upon a smoldering pile of ash that is gently peeping her curiosity gets the better of her and she picks one up gingerly, looking at it closely. It appears to be a bird of some kind, a baby chick, and it looks very familiar. As she stares at it, moving her free hand over it slowly, it peeps again and looks her in the eyes.]
Hey there little buddy. Are you-
[Then it bursts into flames in her hands and she yelps, dropping it and shaking her hand wildly as her eyebrows smoke a bit.]
Shit! Fuck! Ow!!
[She may need... some assistance here.]
Bugs
Shepard more than once has ended up staying awake long past when the sun sets, either scavenging for food, taking care of the Bludrocs left on the isle by friends departed, or just because she can't bring herself to sleep. However, one night when she's out in the jungle looking to pass the time, she begins to see lights glimmering in the vegetation around her. Her first instinct is to get ready for a fight, her biotics beginning to shimmer up her body and adding to the light show... but after a few moments when all the lights do is float around her harmlessly she stops and looks around more curiously. It doesn't take long for her to put it together what this means.
It's rare to see Shepard so completely and utterly absorbed in something, but if anyone comes up she'll be entranced by the fireflies around her. Whether it's gently catching some in her hands or sitting on the ground and watching them flutter about, she'll be in a better mood than she's been in awhile. If you're especially lucky, you may even see her relaxing on the ground and letting the fireflies perch on her body, illuminating her in a soft light.

Minako Aino | Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
[She'd never really had a pet before, unless one counted Artemis. But honestly, Artemis was so much more than that. And he'd likely lecture her if she ever dared consider him a pet.
The chick, though? There was no way she couldn't keep it. Almost as soon as she'd set eyes on them, she'd know she was going to keep one. It had only been a matter of deciding which one. This one just so happened to find her after she'd wandered off to do something else. It was on the way to the building she'd call home on this island that she'd spotted the baby this time.]
Oh goodness! What are you doing out here by yourself, birdie?
[With that, she's kneeling down and hesitantly reaching out to where the tiny gray chick was now cheeping up at her. Her bag, while not entirely forgotten now,
is little more than an afterthought.]
Please, please don't burn all my hair off?
The Bugs
[She might've been afraid of the dark, once upon a time. But she'd learned a long time ago that there was nothing to fear about the absence of light in and of itself.
Still, there was always something magical about the world after the sun had gone to bed. Tonight, however, was even more so because of the multitude of fireflies.

[He hadn't paid much attention to the little birds at first. He's not really the first to fuss at small animals (...these days, at least), but after he came across Akko attempting to coax one of them into friendliness his interest as been...somewhat piqued. Just a little. It's more curiosity than anything else, really! He doesn't even know how big they'll get, and they explode at the drop of a hat!]
[...okay, let's be real, the exploding into fire is helping their case a little bit.]
[Crouching near a bush, Ed holds out a tiny bit of meat in one hand and attempts to make little chirping sounds to lure an ashy little chick out from hiding under the branches. The scorched fur over his entire arm is still smoking a bit, but he's learned from his last attempt, at least.]

Ginko | OTA
Ha ha ha wow this is the worst. He doesn’t hold it against the birds, of course; he’s not sure how much control they even have over their sudden ignition to begin with, and even if they can control it, it’s probably just a defense response. But it sure is INCREDIBLY concerning and inconvenient.
And yet people keep touching them.
He’s got his poncho rolled up under one arm and soaked with seawater now, so as to have it more easily available for smothering fires. His knapsack is hanging off his other shoulder, loaded with what he could fit of his supplies. He’ll approach anyone who seems to be trying to handle a baby phoenix, though he’s definitely trying not to startle them - or the highly flammable birds they’re trying to tame.
“Are you sure you should be doing that?”
B - Bugs (starting March 12th)
Ever since these bugs appeared, Ginko has been spending a lot of time each evening just sitting out in the open with his tail curled around himself, watching them drift through the air. It’s a familiar sight, in, frankly, a few different ways, and… now he has to wonder.
He couldn’t close his second eyelid in Ryslig - meaning he couldn’t connect to the light vein, leaving him entirely cut off from it in a way he had never been in his own world. In those two years, he’d been forced to get used to being entirely disconnected from the River - but he’s not there anymore. So, maybe--
Ginko rests his hands on the ground, closes his eyes - and tries to close them again.
And keeps trying.
To outside observers, it will look like he’s just sitting on the ground with his eyes closed, apparently more relaxed than some residents of the islands may ever have seen him.
This is… probably fine.

"That's it!" A click of the camera. "Work it!" Another click. "I don't know about you, but Red Team could sure use a new mascot. Our old was such a drag." He moves around the fiery bird. "I mean, there's only so much you can do with a flag and after Sarge banned me from going anywhere near it while naked, it just hasn't been the same." Another click. "But maybe, if he see's these, he'll totally change his mind about getting a pet for Red Team. I've been working him down for years now, and I'm thinking I almost got him where I want him."
He's blabbing mostly to himself while the baby phoenix moves around, eyeing him with suspicion and as Donut moves in for a close up the little ancient dino starts to light up ready to burn him when Ginko stops by.
Donut stands just in time to avoid a face full of flames. "Hey, Stranger. Never seen you around here." And since he hasn't have a flash of light as he takes a picture. Once he's rightly blinded him, the blond smiles from behind the camera before lowering it.
"Names Donut. What's yours?"

[Shion had been confused at the feathers floating from the sky until he had realised that they were chicks. Tiny, fluffy adorable baby birds. He approached one carefully, Shion had no idea where it had come from.] Hello, what are you? [He leaned over and reached out to stroke it...
A pop and a woosh of fire, Shion fell backwards, his hands coming up to his face in pain. A moment later he calmed. His face hurt and his hands were red. He was more worried about the bird that had exploded.
However when he looked the bird was there, tiny and small sat in ash. A phoenix... Shion had read about them in stories, but never seen one.
It meant that when people said the sun was a phoenix they were probably being literal, Aster hadn't seen it, Shion hadn't been on the islands at the time. He wasn't sure what to think about that.
But then again he was almost certain this place wasn't real. Not in the sense that what they were seeing was completely the truth. He wasn't sure if they were physically here, or if like in the tower they were once again disembodied souls.]
A phoenix.
Bird 2 and 3
[He had seen other people with the birds, so maybe he had just approached at a bad moment. Some time later Shion was patching up part of the house, replacing some of the leaves with new leaves. A noise caught his attention. He turned around to see another chick.
He approached cautiously this time, not wanting to frighten it.] It's okay, I won't hurt you.
[Luckily Thalassa is no where near, he picked the chick up carefully. It was so soft. He smiled and then yelped in pain as there was a woosh of fire.
Everything hurt, his fingers were beginning to blister. The chick is still there, reborn again.] Won't you be my friend?
[No. Apparently not. More fire. More pain.]
Bird 4
[He should have known better. But he had seen people with the birds and usually animals liked him. He liked animals. He had never met an animal that didn't like him before.
He was heading to bathe his hands in water, they hurt a lot, red and blistered. He was pretty sure from feeling his face he had very little eyebrows left and his hair was singed not to mention his coat.
But here was another chick. A tiny chick on it's own. His approach is even slower this time, a blistered hand reaching out.
He didn't try and pick it up this time, just stroke it. It seemed content for a moment but then...
More fire, more pain. Shion sighed and went to bathe his hands in the sea water before retrieving his first aid kit and loosly bandaging them.]
Not birds
[Other people might need medical attention as well, Shion kept an eye out for them. He didn't stray past what he knew, the islets, the beach, the storytellers temple. He had learned the hard way that this island could be dangerous.
But if he saw anyone who looked more smokey than they should he would approach, to see if they needed help]
birds 2/3!
It's been a Time, that's for sure.]
I don't think they can control themselves, so you shouldn't think it's because they hate you.
[He's not all that far from Shion when he speaks, thumbs hooked into the straps of the island-gifted pack he's thrown on his back, and...well. He doesn't exactly sound all that concerned, though that might just be because he's soft-spoken and he's trying not to disturb the bird nesting on his shoulder.]

Lup | OTA
"Holy shit, what are you doing down here? Where's your mom?" she croons and kneels down in the dirt, offering it a finger. Which the lil thing immediately scorches with an angry squawk and a small burst of flame like ruffled feathers.
Lup yelps and falls in love.
It's a fucking tiny baby phoenix, like the one she'd seen soar across the sky after a week of darkness, dread and pain. A nascent, vulnerable little symbol of hope and life and winning the fight. Also it's gonna be super badass when it's grown up? She chuckles and reaches out again, this time wreathing her hand in the flames of a restrained Fire Bolt.
"Lil bit of friendly fire there, huh? That's okay. But I'm cool, see?" And the chick does see, hopping towards her fire happily and nibbling at her hand. Well, Lup is now definitely ready to die for this bird. She carefully scoops it up and it starts smoldering a bit at being jostled but settles down quickly into the warmth of her hand. Lup is grinning from ear to ear. "You're a good good fire boy, aren't you?" She's gonna be here a while, doting on this bird, whatever task she'd originally set out to do utterly forgotten.

Thankfully, he has far more restraint, and a job to do. With his arms full of island grass and a few vines he's picked up, Guzma is huffing and puffing as he heads back toward the islets. He catches Lup out of the corner of his eye, cooing at the little homewrecker and his nostrils flare. If he could grill and eat these birds...oh. Oh. What a stew he'd make.
"Careful...them mini Moltres there go up in flames more'n a trigger-happy Electrode."
