January Event: Setting Fire to the Sky

JANUARY EVENT: SETTING FIRE TO THE SKY
Who: Everyone!
What: The sun dies, and the creatures of the night emerge from the depths
When: January 21st - January 28th
Where: Everywhere! Ensō, Monsun, Chol, and the Islets
Warnings: Character death, possible body horror and violence. Please mark any additional warnings as needed!
So We Can Take the World Back From the Heart-Attacked

The night of the 21st, the sun begins to dim. It dips in the horizon, sinks to nestle itself in the center of Chol like a star falling in slow motion, where it begins to smolder quietly - massive, smoking, and hot, like a massive egg. The night grows colder, the sky reduced to an inky black. The surface of the surrounding water is still but for the occasional ripple, the odd, strangely subdued wave, with not even the hollow lights of distant stars to glint off its reflective waves.

The Jormun gather around the sunken, dying sun with their scaled hands on their weapons, their expressions grim. They fan out across the island of Chol with arms in hand. Their fortifications have settled around the island's center in a dense ball of bristling weapons. They have been preparing for this. They are ready to fight.

Are you?
No island is safe. From the well-trodden mainland of Ensō and its islets to the stark dichotomy of Monsun to the craggy shores of Chol, all manner of strange things have begun to haul themselves, dripping, from the watery dark.

No more preparation. No more running.

From here on out, it is fight or die.
One Maniac At a Time, We Will Take It Back

As the Storyteller has promised, there is sanctuary in their temple on Ensō, which will keep out the worst of the creatures. It will not, however, protect characters from the cold and dark, and so they will have to keep themselves warm some other way.

The Jormun fight fiercely, but they do not fight alone. Aside from the help that the willing of your number have offered, you may glimpse the Storyteller battling alongside the rest in a flurry of strange, shifting animal shapes: a heavy-antlered reindeer, a shrieking owl with outstretched talons, a slavering grizzly bear with the Storyteller's signature tome strapped across a broad, furry back, to name but a few. Those creatures that the Storyteller defeats will burst into a flurry of paper and dark, spattering ink, rather than being felled in the conventional manner. How odd.

As this is an event with a high risk of death, the Storyteller will impose death penalties for one week only. However, deaths succumbed during the event will count towards the character's total.
Then I'll Raise You Like a Phoenix

Come the sunrise on the 28th, the sun will launch itself into the air with a victorious shriek, its wings trailing plumes of fire behind it. The phoenix takes flight, reborn from the ashes.
The shores of Chol are littered with corpses, both shadowy and scaled, along with an even smattering of crumpled paper and splotched inkstains. Despite the triumph of the fight, it did not come without its costs. The Jormun gather their dead and prepare to mourn them quietly. Those who perished in the fight will not see the sunrise from this unique perspective, watching the murk of the night tint to soft, milky yellow and pink, and then to a glorious new day.

Munin will greet the survivors with a mixture of solemnity and relief, thanking them profusely for their help. There is not much more that her people can offer you, at this point - they must grieve their dead, and she must return to the sea to prove that she has cemented her worth as a leader in the eyes of the other Jormun - but that does not mean that your stories will part forever.

[Ignis' first response to those soft words is sorrow, but he knows that sad feeling is far too close to the pity that Ardyn detests so he forces it away and lets another emotion take its place. Anger. At the Shield who broke his vows, at the brother who turned Ardyn away, at Bahamut who thought his plan was the only way.

Honestly, he's angry at Ardyn too for giving into that darker part of himself, for letting go of hope, but two thousand years is a long time and even the most perfect, hopeful person would have cracked. Can one really blame a man who took the darkness of countless people into himself for doing so as well?]

They were wrong.

[He said once before that not caring is what got them into this mess and remembering what happened in Altissia doesn't change that. Ardyn's confession doesn't either. His choice, perhaps, changed nothing, but it was a choice made out of caring and he would do it aga-

His thoughts stop for a moment. He would do it again, wouldn't he? Ignis doesn't regret the desperate action, but knowing he would do it again even with the hardships it would bring? That is something he hadn't been sure of. At least, not until now.

A small smile crosses his face as he continues to gentle stroke Ardyn's hair.]

There are many types of love. Dark at its core, jealousy is still one of those.

[Perhaps, tainted as he is, the only kind Ardyn can truly feel.]

I'm not certain of what you think you're implying...but present situation aside, I don't care about any of you. I haven't the capacity or the desire to try.

[Which was a funny thing to say, tilting his head just slightly into Ignis's hand.]

Jealousy is jealousy, and nothing more. I envy what Noctis has, his friends and his position as the savior I once believed I would be. Love does not factor into it, whether for the Blademaster and my brother or for my distant descendant and his would-be Kingsglaive.

I've told you a thousand times...there's naught but hatred and spite left, especially when it comes to the four of you. And if there truly is more as so many of you seem to think, it's long since been drowned out and lost. Once I've been forced off this island, you'll understand if you hope to survive.

[A sad, though surprisingly sharp laugh leaves Ignis as he leans forward to rest his forehead against that of the exhausted healer. He hadn't meant for the laugh to be so sharp or so loud, but he still doesn't have full control of himself. More honesty that he would like is probably going to be slipping into his actions for a while, much to his dismay.]

My little monster, you so do like lying to yourself.

[Fingers very lightly stroke Ardyn's cheek.]

If you cared nothing for us, you wouldn't even feel envy. 'Envy' by its very definition means that you desire something that another has, and what is desire but a craving for something? A want? A need? A love?

[Ignis falls silent then, not because he has no more to say, but because he's all but shaking from the effort to force what he wants to say out of his mouth. His head is pounding as he fights off the very real urge to give into sleep so he can escape the pain.]

I know what you're tryin' t' do. Won't work.

[Ignis pushing himself too hard to help someone else? It's more likely than you think.]

You push the definition well past its limits, my dear. [Ardyn shifted as much as he could in his worn-down and exhausted state, pulling Ignis against his shoulder and leaning on him in turn. Instead of letting the adviser continue, Ardyn elected to give him a few minutes to recover by doing what he did best: talk.]

...I have loved the world and its people more openly and passionately than you could ever know. Solheim, Izunia, Gilgamesh-...there was nothing I would have refused to do for any of them. I gave up my time, my life, my humanity--all for the sake of a world that might someday be safe for the people I loved.

I can't... 'the Accursed' can't understand compassion like that anymore. To risk one's own safety for even one's person's sake is...it's inefficient at best and recklessly stupid at worst. I want to protect all of you from myself, and none of you will allow it--instead choosing to show a monster and blight on the world compassion at cost to yourselves.

[He paused for a moment to try arranging a chaotic mess of thoughts, arm around Ignis' shoulders as if proximity alone would stop Ardyn from being cold as the walking corpse he was.]

Having all of you simply stop trying to get close to me is a small price for your safety. Why do none of you understand...I don't want to hurt you. If that should be Ardyn Lucis Caelum's final wish, I do not see why so many of you adamantly refuse it. Solitude is no foreign thing to me, and these islands are vastly preferable placed beside the last one to which I was exiled.

If we can't sacrifice, neither can you.

[It's frustrating. There is so much he wants to say, so many arguments he wants to make, and yes, so many definitions he wishes to push--it is part of his job, after all--yet, the words seem farther and farther away the more he reaches for them, his condition stifling his best efforts.]

I'll fill no self-fulfilling prophecies.

[He is already entangled in enough of the regular ones to aid Ardyn in the slightest when it comes to his own desire to once again be abandoned. Either way, they will upset the Accursed, after all. One course of action leads them to abandoning him which will only prove the man's hatred and rage correct, lending fuel to a fire that needs no more. The other course angers him because they will not leave him be to reinforce his hatred of all around him. It will not allow him to believe them as bad and worthless as those before.

Ignis' good eye falls closed for a minute as he turns his face farther into Ardyn's shoulder, and he is unable to stop a tired sigh from preceding his words.]

We're a sad pair.
