January Intro: I Know the Winter's Getting Colder

INTRO LOG: JANUARY
Who: Everyone!
What: New souls arrive to the archipelago of LifeAftr
When: January 5th and onward
Where: Chol and surrounding waters
Warnings: Mark as needed!

The Overview: New Lands
New arrivals will not be waking in the typical hub of activity; instead, they will find themselves coming to on the small island of Chol. While the island's fringes are little more than an unforgiving spread of craggy, canyon-like rock and coastal cliffs, the island dips down to form a fertile divot of edenic woodland in its center. The people living there will even be helpful and polite to you, should you inquire after them.

All new arrivals will additionally awake with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!

Icebreaker: This is the Winter of Our Youth
Unless you're someone with a fondness for the cold, you'll undoubtedly be waking with more than a slight chill in your bones. The appearance of the island of Chol has signaled a coming event of great import in LifeAftr, and unfortunately, the signs of that event's approach have already been set in motion. The temperature has begun to drop as the sun's rays begin to die, faster and faster, leading to an impressive cold snap in the ocean waters - particularly those surrounding Chol.

It is for that reason that you won't be waking on Chol, per se. Instead, you'll be waking on a thick crust of ice that's mantled itself over the ocean waters, freezing solid enough to bear your weight...for the most part.
The ice won't hold forever; it isn't meant to. If you happen to be particularly vivacious in your waking, or especially active in general, thick cracks will start to spiderweb out from underneath those impacts with low, warning chunks and wrenches of fracturing ice. Better hurry to land soon, unless you care to take a little dip into those freezing cold ocean waters.

Mainland: When We Pick Over the Past
Should you make it to the land of Chol, braving the iced-over waters surrounding its craggy shores, you'll encounter something at least as startling - the people who have elected to set up a rudimentary encampment upon its lands. While a bit on the scalier side, the Jormun are nonetheless allied to you land-dwellers, and will welcome you to the island.
Most will be preoccupied with preparations for an approaching siege, but many will comment idly that the cold is a sign of the coming battle. Some may point you to their leader, known to most as Munin, but others will venture hospitality based on the actions of those land-dwellers that came before you, who were successful in allying themselves to this sea-dwelling people.

Those who might have braved the cold a little too fiercely will quickly be offered some rather rough blankets - perhaps more on par with burlap sacks in terms of texture - as well as a hot brew that the Jormun call brrkshavak. Heated to a boil just prior to being served, the drink will be more than adequate in warming your weary bones, though it bodes mentioning that it is both scalding hot and made with a fleshy kind of undersea herb that is akin to crushed chili pepper in taste.

It'll warm you up, all right.

As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.

[ Not too far off, Magnus sits with his 3rd or 4th bowl of brrkshavak and a blanket over his shoulders, having, for the moment, gotten absolutely distracted from the task at hand - figuring out where he is, how, and why - to enjoy copious amounts of this slimy soup that's going to absolutely wreck him on the way out.

The sound of the crashing barrel catches his attention, and he watches this small bird-ish person fuss about for a moment.

Standing up, he downs the rest of his brew - hot hot hot hot - and makes his way over. ]

Hey there. Need some help?

[ he's in the middle of pushing the broken wood into the barrel (empty, thank goodness!) when Magnus comes around the corner like a surprise choo-choo train!!

Otus has acquired a +1 Spook!

But after the startling settles down, Magnus' offer reaches his brain. He...wants to help. He wants to help? But Otus dropped it-- where's the disappointed facial features? And...why is he looking for them at all?

Otus offers him the broken piece he was trying to fit on. Not very good at fixing things-- that was definitely always more Geddy's speed-- and seeming somewhat apologetic. :C ]

[ Magnus might not be the best at noticing things, but he sees the frown on this guy's face, and that's no good! ]

It's okay! Here, let me see.

[ Master Carpenter, ya'll.

He takes the loose piece and crouches to take a closer look at the barrel, scratching his chin. It doesn't seem to actually have broken pieces, just fell apart on impact. Which is lucky!

He fusses around with his belt and the little pouches and glass ball (which olds a very living goldfish!) strung to his belt. ]

I don't--have....ah!

[ He swings his backpack off and ruts around in it, taking out a small hatchet he'd found in it before. He turns it around in his hand, so that the blade is facing away from the barrel. ]

We just gotta knock this piece back into place, then get that ring nailed down again to hold it all in place. Can you hold this piece? Right here.

[ It's okay.

He's a little touched at the stranger's kindness, and watches him closely with the loose piece!! What on earth is he doing? Is he? Fixing it? He's a mechanic? That's amazing!

His belt reveals a little goldfish, swimming in a ball, and Otus is somewhat surprised...a fish? A little tiny one? He just carries it around? He wants to see...fish are nice. Especially little tiny ones.

Magnus startles him a little by swinging his backpack off, and Otus stands at attention when the man speaks to him, reaching out with both hands to hold the piece in question...without question. H-help the mechanic! Yes! Yep! That is what we are doing today! ]

[ Magnus notices this little dude is pretty tense, but he is mostly focused on helping him getting his barrel fixed. It's pretty easy, specially since nothing broke, so Magnus can get it back together even without having his proper tools around. ]

Hold it steady, okay? Watch those fingers.

[ Not that he's gonna hurt the guy, but, you know. He looks like he startles easy.

So he sets on hammering the loose piece back into place, hitting it with the broad side of the hatchet. Not the prettiest job, it's going to leave some scuffs, but it'll do. And he holds the piece in place when it's down, getting the metal ring wrapped around the wood pieces again and whacking that back into place too.

The tests the stability by giving the barrel a couple of gentle fist smacks. ]

She's gonna hold for now, but, huh, try not to hit it against anything. Kinda hard to make sure it's held tight, you know, without the proper tools for it...
