Who: Terra, Trashw Keaton and OPEN
What: Out and about on the main island now that the flooding has stopped
When: 11/10
Where: NONE OF YOUR BEESWA- er. Enso and the Islets (..sounds like a band name). Allll over.
[1: Wandering Around, Surveying the Damage]
[ The flooding did quite a number on the island, and Terra had been curious about what the effects it would have, personally - plus, she hadn't been sleeping well, so some fresh air usually helped. Usually- the air was anything but fresh and clean on the mainland. Especially near the water - it smelled like dead fish. She paused on the beach for a little bit, just observing the area, her stomach turning at the sheer stench, before she rather suddenly pivoted to walk away, shuddering. The plantlife wasn't doing much better on that front for that matter. So far into her thoughts was she that she couldn't even muster her usual energy as she made her way along the beach. ]
[2: Closed for Keaton and Terra's Adventurin' Hijinx]
[ With all the dead fish and plants from the flooding, Terra had sauntered down to the beach to look for Keaton - figuring from their conversation, it was the most likely place he'd be right now thanks to his love of disgustingly smelly things. Ick. Well, to each their own, although she had to admit Keaton was the first person..wolf..person that she's ever met who actually LIKED the smell of dead things. But thinking about that lead her mind to a darker thought she shied away from. Her walk earlier did successfully wake her up enough that she could feign her usual cheer at least, and that was a good thing - she already accidentally worried Keaton once. She'd rather not do so again. ]
[3: Wildcard]
[ Terra can be found in various parts of the island and on any of the islets today. Normally her walks only take her from Islet #1 to the mainland where she'll explore a bit, but today she's getting in a little extra wandering time and visiting other islets for what is probably the first time in the last month or so. She might be perched up in a tree chilling out with the birds, hanging out by a mana pool or even checking out other things - anything can happen! ]

But it's just going into the ground anyway for the ..compost. Why would something else chewing on it matter..?
[ She does check the fish for toothmarks though, and nods a little to herself when she finds none. ]

These are all the ones I can find.
no subject
That should be enough to start working with. I've got some salt with me in my pack, so if you want to find us a good, flat spot to work on, I can show you how to salt these.
no subject
[ She could maybe smooth out a nice flat spot - although she supposed that might not work if they're trying to preserve the fish. So she glanced around for some driftwood, or maybe a flattish rock. Hrrrrm! ]

We'll need to hang them up somewhere later, so we'll be moving them anyway, but the ground should be all right if I put down some cloth or large leaves to keep them from getting covered in dirt...
no subject
Mmmh, okay. Oh, I can use this. [ She reached behind her to unhook her cape and spread it out on the ground. Eeww now she's gonna smell like fish all day. ]
About the compost for the plants - once it's prepared, it's buried with the seeds? [ She'll be getting some seeds on her expedition later, it'll be nice to try planting things for a change. ]

[There still might be some fish smell, but it won't be as bad as putting it directly on the fabric. Muffet reaches up to the branches of a nearby palm and neatly removes one frond.]
It takes a while for compost to break down into a usable mixture, you need to leave it to decompose for a bit, but once it has you can mix it in with the soil, like you would with fertilizer.

Got it. [ At least she absorbs instruction quickly! ]
I mean.. It seems simple enough if a little...time consuming. But I suppose this is another thing you would have to be patient and wait for. [ Too bad there isn't a magic that can just..immediately GROW stuff once it's planted. ]
no subject
A frustrating amount of things are like that, yes. But it's better to take the time to do something properly than have to do it all over again because rushing made something go wrong.
I've found the trick is to try and find something else to do while waiting, so that there's always something to keep you busy.

What do you do to pass the time?

[She chats idly as she pulls her tools out of her pack, sizing up the fish with a practiced eye.]
Do you know how to clean and gut a fish, yet?
no subject
Yes, I know how to do that, fortunately. I can catch them more quickly too. [ She means with her hands though. She hasn't quite figured out to make that net yet. ]
But I've been able to clean and gut them since I arrived here. I've mostly been eating that, and the berries while I'm here. [ She can't complain - it's more than she ever got back in the Empire. Probably. ]
Do you want me to clean and gut these?

[Leaving the matter of the fish itself in Terra's capable hands for the moment, Muffet turns to her pack again and begins pulling out the package of salt she has inside.]
no subject
There, finished.

Very good work, dearie. Now, the way you start is by cutting what you have into thin strips- there's not an exact size, but generally you don't want them to be any thicker than this...
[She demonstrates on the fish, working slowly but steadily so that Terra could easily see each step of what she was doing.]
no subject
You can't salt the fish when they're.. um. Fish formed? You have to cut them in strips? [ Hrm. She could probably do this for regular meat, when she manages to get some, too, now that she thinks about it. ]

Have you ever eaten one? A shark? [ It's a random question, sure, but Terra has that habit of asking random things. It's a nice way to pass the time while they work. ]
no subject
Too large to preserve whole, certainly. Cut down neatly, the same way we're doing here, and one can still salt the meat- I worked with one of the others here a while ago, helping them properly salt a tiger-shark they'd killed so it wouldn't go to waste.
[Which also answers her question about whether Muffet has ever eaten one...]
no subject
Was it Karamatsu? A few months ago he told me he killed a tiger shark. And he was only equipped with his fishing gear. Something like that is a pretty impressive feat.
[ If it was true. But she'd no reason to disbelieve him. ]
no subject
Ah, no, it was the Drifter. Have you met them, yet?
no subject
No, I've never met him. What's he like?
Just for the record, the Drifter uses they/them pronouns.
[With the possible exception of their reaction to their death in the caverns, but under the circumstances she can't hold that against them. She only hopes they're coping with it a little better now.]
Physically they're... well, humanoid is a broad term, seeing as it could cover both you and I, but they're more your shape than mine. Fairly short by human standards, I think, usually wearing some kind of cloak and helmet.
Noted!
I mean, a mask .. or a bag or something. I don't think he was the Drifter person. [ After all, the other guy was clearly male. Although huh, more Terra's shape than Muffet's so.. female? ]
Drifter is a woman then? Ah, my mistake.
