Ruins Mingle Log!

Who: Newt Geiszler ohnehalfte and EVERYONE
What: So a bunch of people headed up towards the ruins, so they've got to all run into each other and start to congregate, right???
When: Evening of the mingle log and onwardish.
Where: The Ruins
Warnings: Um...same as the mingle log?



The beach curves up a gentle slope until it meets forest, some manner of building visible through the trees. Further exploration of this area will reveal a dilapidated building of sorts; the architecture is indiscernible to even the most skilled eye. Despite looking as if it has seen better days, there are areas that offer some form of shelter...and who knows what else. Just because it appears uninhabited doesn’t mean you won’t wind up pleasantly, or unpleasantly, surprised.


[ooc: Hey y'all! I thought this might be a good place to start getting larger groups of characters together to do some exploring, settling down, banding together and figuring out rations, etc. Feel free to throw up any threads of your own for specific things like exploration groups, a gathering in the entrance hall, whatever strikes your fancy or that you think your character would organize. Have a party!

[He'll take a moment to look around, at that question] Eh...considering the size, it might've been some sort of large house or something at some point. But it's definitely just ruins, now. It'll make a good enough shelter for us, though. Way better than sleeping out in the elements.

Yeah, that's no fun.

[...why did that sound like he's speaking from experience.]

But if whoever used to live here ain't no longer here, maybe that means they found a way out and away from this place... so we can too!

[Newt blinks at that easy response, and frowns slightly--but he's distracted by the sudden blinding positivity. There's that pang just behind his ribs again, this time tinged with worry.]

...yeah, dude. Maybe so.

[That answer comes out as more contemplative than uncertain. Because there's a part of Newt that's been desperately clinging to the idea that if he fights hard enough, he can gain back any sort of control in this sort of a situation. Even though there's so much evidence, experience to the contrary, it's something he actively convinces himself of because without it, well, really...he has nothing.

So...there's a smile creeping onto his face, twitching up at the corner of his mouth, small and genuine] You know what? Definitely. We will definitely figure this place out for sure. It might take a little time, but we'll do it.

[That's what happens when a character of many years and many games meets one who is in day one, game one, and at the most blindingly optimistic point of his canon. FRIENDSHIP SOLVES EVERYTHING!!!]

I do wish I could get back home as soon as possible... but if I can't, then I can't, and no use frettin' over stuff I can't do.

[Huff! Hands on hips.]

Right now, we gotta focus on what we can do! And we can explore, and learn!

[Awww buddy. Mickey's optimism is catching, possibly because it's what Newt so desperately wants to believe himself.]

It's a good place to start, definitely. The more we know, the more we've got to work with, at least. And if we make time to analyze the data and figure out what we don't know, the more easily we can narrow down our search.

[He knocks a fist to his head, almost knocking his hat off.]

I'm afraid I won't be much use there... Brains were never my specialty.

[Really, he can't help but grin a bit at that, still feeling a little off-kilter by the compliments because they're so honest....it's unusual. But he let's Mickey's second comment easily divert him]

Hey, dude, don't sell yourself short. There's 9 types of intelligence out there; yours might just be different from mine.

[Now that makes him blink, mostly out of confusion.]

9 types? Gee, that's a lot! I had no idea!

Yeah! There's this behavioral psychologist named Howard Gardner who noticed that schools only seemed to measure one side of intelligence, and the people he worked with seemed to be intelligent in different areas, so he came up with nine different main ones. There's natural intelligence, which is the ability to survive in nature and notice things; musical intelligence, which means you're very good at music and recognizing the difference in sound; logical-mathmatical intelligence, which is being really good at numbers and reasoning; existential intelligence, which is being generally smart when it comes to life and the big picture and philosophical stuff; interpersonal intelligence, which is being really good with people, basically; bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, which is being really good at sports and other physical stuff; linguistic intelligence, which means you're good at languages; intra-personal intelligence, which means you're good at knowing yourself; and spatial intelligence, which means you're really good at art because you've got a great awareness of how the world fits together as a three-dimensional entity.

[did you get all that, Mickey? Anyway, Newt shrugs, continuing.]

I mean, it's like they say, if you judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree, it'll spend its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Hm... well, I think maybe I'm that interpersonal one, then, cause I really like people! And I really like making new friends, and helping others! Now I feel a whole lot better! Thanks a bunch, Newt!

[the corner of Newt's mouth quirks up in a smile at that] No problem, dude. Just statin' facts. [He plops down next his knapsack]

We should definitely get around to exploring this place, though. The sooner we figure it out, the better off we'll be.

About that... if we got the materials, maybe we can make some sort of map of this place, and of the island itself. That way we can keep track of what we learned, and don't get lost as easily.

Yeah, it's finding the materials that's the problem. I dunno about you, but I don't have much in the way of paper or anything to write with, pen, pencil or otherwise.

Well, okay, I've got like...one piece of chalk, but I'm saving it.

I got my sword, some cloth, hard tack, a hammer, soap... and a funny lookin' sickle.

[He clicks his tongue.]

I guess one of us havin' punch of paper and pencils would be too much to ask for... we'll just have to make due.

[There's a hum in Newt's throat at that, brow furrowed slightly in thought] ...well, I mean, I guess we could carve it into the stone or something. At least it'd definitely be permanent that way.

Yeah, we could do that! Shoot, I don't even know how to use a sickle.

Well, no better time to start, right? [he grins] I mean, I can't say that I know how to use one either, but there's probably someone around here who does? Considering the variety of everyone...[he waves a hand, indicating those gathered in the entryway]

[Mickey glances over, nodding in agreement.]

Sure is a curious cast of characters we got here.

... I wonder...

[Newt glances at Mickey at that, arching an eyebrow] What?

[souris_keteer]

Well, it's just... We're all pretty unique individuals. Ain't a normal one in the bunch. Shoot, even if someone looks normal, their history says they're not.

Just... makes me wonder if us bein' here is less random and a little more on purpose.

[ohnehalfte]

...honestly? In my experience, when this kinda thing happens, it's never random. [Newt shakes his head a bit, mouth pressing into a line] The question is always who and why.

Well, we've got you, who's super smart... And there's others, who have magic, experience in exploration, people who know how to fight, how to cook... It's like, if we had to be stuck here, we got the right people for it.

[Aside from himself, as Mickey is still far too humble to consider himself of any great importance.]

I mean, you're not wrong. [Newt folds his arms over his chest, but mostly in thought] Weirdly, though, I don't think I've met anyone with superpowers, other than Wade--[he hooks a thumb at a red-and-black-clad figure in the corner] --here, and usually there's a lot. But you're right, there is a solid mix of people. Which is far more deliberate than something random could provide.

[Mickey copies the gesture.]

Hm... But you know, that's somethin' too. If we had a bunch of folks with amazing powers and magic and could do anything, it's like... bein' here would be "too easy".

Yeah, no kidding. So even if someone did have superpowers, they'd probably be nerfed or something. Or they'd find a way to make it difficult for even those people, because that's always how it works. There's always something more powerful than even the people with a lot of power that makes it so even they can't get any traction.
