Ruins Mingle Log!

What: So a bunch of people headed up towards the ruins, so they've got to all run into each other and start to congregate, right???
When: Evening of the mingle log and onwardish.
Where: The Ruins
Warnings: Um...same as the mingle log?



The beach curves up a gentle slope until it meets forest, some manner of building visible through the trees. Further exploration of this area will reveal a dilapidated building of sorts; the architecture is indiscernible to even the most skilled eye. Despite looking as if it has seen better days, there are areas that offer some form of shelter...and who knows what else. Just because it appears uninhabited doesn’t mean you won’t wind up pleasantly, or unpleasantly, surprised.


[ooc: Hey y'all! I thought this might be a good place to start getting larger groups of characters together to do some exploring, settling down, banding together and figuring out rations, etc. Feel free to throw up any threads of your own for specific things like exploration groups, a gathering in the entrance hall, whatever strikes your fancy or that you think your character would organize. Have a party!

[There's a hum in Newt's throat at that, brow furrowed slightly in thought] ...well, I mean, I guess we could carve it into the stone or something. At least it'd definitely be permanent that way.

Well, no better time to start, right? [he grins] I mean, I can't say that I know how to use one either, but there's probably someone around here who does? Considering the variety of everyone...[he waves a hand, indicating those gathered in the entryway]

[Mickey glances over, nodding in agreement.]

Sure is a curious cast of characters we got here.

... I wonder...

[Newt glances at Mickey at that, arching an eyebrow] What?

Well, it's just... We're all pretty unique individuals. Ain't a normal one in the bunch. Shoot, even if someone looks normal, their history says they're not.

Just... makes me wonder if us bein' here is less random and a little more on purpose.

...honestly? In my experience, when this kinda thing happens, it's never random. [Newt shakes his head a bit, mouth pressing into a line] The question is always who and why.

Well, we've got you, who's super smart... And there's others, who have magic, experience in exploration, people who know how to fight, how to cook... It's like, if we had to be stuck here, we got the right people for it.

[Aside from himself, as Mickey is still far too humble to consider himself of any great importance.]

I mean, you're not wrong. [Newt folds his arms over his chest, but mostly in thought] Weirdly, though, I don't think I've met anyone with superpowers, other than Wade--[he hooks a thumb at a red-and-black-clad figure in the corner] --here, and usually there's a lot. But you're right, there is a solid mix of people. Which is far more deliberate than something random could provide.

[Mickey copies the gesture.]

Hm... But you know, that's somethin' too. If we had a bunch of folks with amazing powers and magic and could do anything, it's like... bein' here would be "too easy".

Yeah, no kidding. So even if someone did have superpowers, they'd probably be nerfed or something. Or they'd find a way to make it difficult for even those people, because that's always how it works. There's always something more powerful than even the people with a lot of power that makes it so even they can't get any traction.

[Mickey looks at him, surprised. He's trying not to call Newt a genius, due to their earlier talk about it, but man, it's hard not to. So he tries to say it in a different way.]

... Y'sound like this is somethin' familiar.

[Newt shrugs a shoulder at that, arms still folded] This is the third time this whole 'dragged to another world' thing has happened to me, so yeah. [he says it more casually than he actually looks about the whole thing]

Th... third time?! This is somethin' that happens that often?!

[WHAT THE HELL, MAN]

[...honestly that reaction is kinda vindicating. Because yeah, it's a lot. But Newt's already lost his cool on this guy once today, and he doesn't want to do it again. So he just rubs the back of his neck]

...yeah. I'm not the only one it happens to, so consensus is yeah, this is something that happens more often than not. You're just...not aware of it until you're in it, I guess.

But how? Why? We gotta put a stop to it! We can't let this keep happening!

[Newt's mouth presses into something like a thin line, and it honestly takes a moment to answer, because how does he even start, really?] I mean...I don't know. I don't know how, or why. The only why I've been able to figure out is 'because we can,' usually from whomever pulled us into whatever world we're in. Usually they want something. They want us to be lab rats for them, or a living food or power source. As for the how, insofar they've all been pretty secretive and not willing to share anything. So listen, if I could control it in any way, I would, but that's still a work in progress.

[Whoa, someone as smart as Newt doesn't have all the answers? This is indeed a crisis!]

... Well, progress is better than nothin'. And this is a new day, a new situation, a new team to work with! I bet if we all put our heads together, we can put a stop to it once and for all! We aren't puppets!

[...Newt wants to believe that. He really, really does. After all, it's what he's been struggling to convince himself of since Hermann disappeared for about three months back in Haven. That he has some measure control here. That if he works hard enough, fights hard enough, is smart enough and good enough, he can influence what happens to him. To Hermann. To everyone. Despite all the evidence to the contrary.

He takes a deep breath. He has to believe in it. It feels naive, almost, but...he really, really wants to believe it.]

...yeah. We'll find a way. [there's a hard set to his mouth, a clenching in his jaw. He hasn't given up yet, despite everything, and he's not about to start now.]
