Part I: Get Wrekt
You rouse to a splash of sea salt drying on your skin. A haze of glass-white sand glitters in your vision, dappled by lush palms and thick, curling foliage that disappears into a jungle of deep jade. From behind, crackling wood and sawing rope groan from a mangled life raft ran ashore. A petering wash of tide over pebbled sand fills your ears as you struggle to gain your bearings in a vast portrait of tropical color…
No...no, no, that’s not precisely how this story starts.
Why don't we start over?
You rouse to a splash of sea salt, spraying across yourself and the wooden floor beneath you as it breaks across the edge of the platform. The light as it dances across the sea is blinding, dappling white spots across your vision as you slowly come back to consciousness and realize that - this is not where you last remember being.
The middle of the ocean is likely not a place most recall being at all. As you struggle to fully comprehend the new scenario in which you have found yourself, three things become quickly apparent. The raft you find yourself upon barely constitutes as something that should float, never mind a boat. In the distance, perhaps a few hours away at most, a large island beckons to you, a wide strip of beach surrounded by cliffs making it very clear where the most fortuitous of directions shall be.
Lastly, of course, you’re not alone. Hopefully your new companion(s) are just as keen to get ashore before nightfall as you, or voyaging together will not be the most positive experience. At your side you will find a knapsack, one to every member of your raft party, and upon inspecting its contents, you will discover any rewards you may have accrued - as well as a few other items to give you a fighting chance.
A note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme: those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.

Part II: Choose Your Own Adventure
By fortune (or misfortune, as it were), you eventually find your feet meeting sand, blessed shore to stagger upon as you shake off your newly found sea-legs. There are those that may find this place familiar, as though it appeared in a dream, though the expanse of shore certainly seems larger. The beach stretches off into the distance on both sides, curving around sharp ridges and cliffs, mist obscuring the view the farther along it goes.
So here you are. You’ve found land. Company. Supplies. The sun is now beginning to trek rather low upon the horizon…spending the night outside in such an unfamiliar land is unappealing at best and outright dangerous at the worst.
There is one silver lining in the midst of this mess. Directly ahead, the beach curves up a gentle slope until it meets forest, some manner of building visible through the trees. Further exploration of this area will reveal a dilapidated building of sorts; the architecture is indiscernible to even the most skilled eye. Despite looking as if it has seen better days, there are areas that offer some form of shelter...and who knows what else. Just because it appears uninhabited doesn’t mean you won’t wind up pleasantly, or unpleasantly, surprised.

So what shall you do from here, traveller? There is land to be explored, strangers to meet, friends to reunite with. Supplies to inspect and plenty of questions in need of being said aloud. Choose your path, make haste, and above all else: survive. And whatever you will, take heart.
Your story is about to begin anew.
Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

[ Marcille waved her arms frantically in front of her, as if to ward off the moniker. Oh god if she was a monster then she'd be
she'd be
better not finish that train of thought. ]
I mean... where I'm from, it means something totally different. No one truly knows where they're come from, but they resemble animals. They don't talk, and chances are they'll try to eat you... or worse.
no subject
I think we've simply got a confusing overlap in terms, then- we do occasionally cultivate plants or animals with useful magical properties, but monster is definitely only used for magical people.
Some of us do resemble animals, or elemental forces, or even inanimate objects, but it's always easy to tell that they're not just those. Even monsters who can't speak verbally write and use very clear forms of sign language.
As for where we come from... well, as far as anyone can tell we started off on the surface just like humans did. We lived underground for a time, after losing a war with humanity, but eventually we managed to make peace and return to living beside them.
[She's choosing to believe that's what Marcille meant by 'where they come from', because she's not going to give the This Is How Little Spider Monster Eggs Get Made (But Don't Do It Until You're Older) talk to a total stranger, okay. It's been a strange enough day as it is.]

Elves and humans mostly get along -- in fact, my party used to be mostly made up of humans. It's orcs that we have bad blood with.
[ And... maybe the dwarves sometimes? But eyyy it was such a long time ago, right? ]
...I'm not sure we'll be mending fences anytime soon, though.
no subject
There are still a few individual humans and monsters who dislike each other, but overall the situation is amiable.
no subject
[ Her tone sounded doubtful, but hey. There was at least one group of orcs that didn't immediately try to eat her...? ]
So it's just human and not-human, huh? You don't have spider tribes or... other groups amongst yourselves?
no subject
It's actually called the Kingdom of Monsters. Our king is a lovely man, really, but he's frankly awful at naming things.
no subject
[ This coming from someone who named her staff. Eh. ]
Either way, if he can get his subjects to praise him, he must be a pretty fair ruler! Um... so what kind of monster is he?
no subject
Guess what it was like there.
[Hint: there was lava.]
He's a rather unusual species of monster, like all of our royalty- there's a formal name for them, I think, but everybody just uses the common term 'boss monsters'. They look like... mm, picture a tall, human-shaped person with white fur, long fluffy ears, paws, and goatlike features- including horns.
no subject
[ You know what. No. She was better than that. ]
That sounds kind of terrifying, except for the fluffy ears part. Maybe like a minotaur or a satyr. But... if he's a fair ruler, then I suppose there's not much to complain about.
If I may ask, how does your kingdom work? Is the monarchy passed down from generation to generation?
no subject
[The war isn't the only reason, of course, but that's not her story to tell.]
To us, though, he was always quite kind.
Boss monsters, among other abilities, are very long-lived: they stop aging once they hit adulthood, and don't start again until they have children. In theory one could live forever, but in practice most eventually wish to have a child, who they then pass the crown down to in their own time.
no subject
[ Marcille tapped her chin thoughtfully. ]
...To tell you the truth, I have a hard time figuring out how old humans are. And halflings.
no subject
The average monster can live quite a bit longer than that before age becomes an issue, some even longer still, but I think boss monsters are the only ones with perfect immortality.
...To be honest, the thing that confuses me is how similar they all look. They've got different hair and eye and skin colors, and so on, but once you get past that they're so much more uniform compared to all the different subspecies that monsters come in.
no subject
[ GOSH it was like you just blinked and you were dealing with old age. ]
And they're really very touchy about it if you make a mistake. For instance, this one trap master I know -- I thought he was a child for some time, but he insisted that he wasn't. Then it turns out he was only 29, after all!
[ Kids these days ]
no subject
[She shrugs. Humans, who can tell.]
no subject
[ It was like trusting eight year olds with booze and deadly weapons, scream. ]
...the weird thing is, Laios is even younger than him. I guess some people just have baby faces.
no subject
[Yeah, turns out some kids are pretty good with deadly weapons. Luckily, she's not from that kind of timeline.]
Is Laios a friend of yours? I'm not familiar with the name.
no subject
[ Marcille paused. What were halflings? She just didn't know. ]
Imagine a human, but about half as tall, with big ears. That's a halfling. They're light on their feet, so they're useful for sneaking about.
[ She gave a sort of half-grimace. ]
And Laios is our party leader. He's a human, and he's kind of one of those unreliable types. I mean, I guess sometimes he has good plans but usually they're totally hare-brained!
no subject
A bit of a gambler, is he? Comes up golden half the time, then loses it all the next round?
no subject
[ cried Marcille, in the manner of one often wronged. ]
He once had us all lower him into a magic painting with a rope so he could try and eat the food inside! Who DOES that?!
no subject
no subject
I think he'd been thinking about trying it just about forever, and finally had an excuse. You know how that type can be.
[ PSA please don't try to eat random things in paintings ]
no subject
[Muffet, you once nearly murdered someone because you charged on ahead before bothering to figure out whether they'd actually killed the people you were trying to avenge, you don't get to talk.]
I do hope the painted food was worth it.
no subject
[ She sighed. ]
But at least we all learned a valuable lesson -- I hope.
no subject
no subject
[ She looked up in sudden realization ]
...But look at me, taking up all your time! I'm going to go and gather up a few more supplies while there's still light out. It was very nice meeting you.
Wrapping up, you think?
Sounds good!
