August Intro: You Think...You Wink...You Do A Double Blink...

INTRO LOG: AUGUST

Who: Everyone!
What: New souls arrive to the archipelago of LifeAftr.

Part I: Get Wrekt
You rouse to a splash of sea salt drying on your skin. A haze of glass-white sand glitters in your vision, dappled by lush palms and thick, curling foliage that disappears into a jungle of deep jade. From behind, crackling wood and sawing rope groan from a mangled life raft ran ashore. A petering wash of tide over pebbled sand fills your ears as you struggle to gain your bearings in a vast portrait of tropical color…

No...no, no, that’s not precisely how this story starts.

Why don't we start over?

You rouse to a splash of sea salt, spraying across yourself and the wooden floor beneath you as it breaks across the edge of the platform. The light as it dances across the sea is blinding, dappling white spots across your vision as you slowly come back to consciousness and realize that - this is not where you last remember being.

The middle of the ocean is likely not a place most recall being at all. As you struggle to fully comprehend the new scenario in which you have found yourself, three things become quickly apparent. The raft you find yourself upon barely constitutes as something that should float, never mind a boat. In the distance, perhaps a few hours away at most, a large island beckons to you, a wide strip of beach surrounded by cliffs making it very clear where the most fortuitous of directions shall be.

Lastly, of course, you’re not alone. Hopefully your new companion(s) are just as keen to get ashore before nightfall as you, or voyaging together will not be the most positive experience. At your side you will find a knapsack, one to every member of your raft party, and upon inspecting its contents, you will discover any rewards you may have accrued - as well as a few other items to give you a fighting chance.

A note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme: those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.

Part II: Choose Your Own Adventure

By fortune (or misfortune, as it were), you eventually find your feet meeting sand, blessed shore to stagger upon as you shake off your newly found sea-legs. There are those that may find this place familiar, as though it appeared in a dream, though the expanse of shore certainly seems larger. The beach stretches off into the distance on both sides, curving around sharp ridges and cliffs, mist obscuring the view the farther along it goes.

So here you are. You’ve found land. Company. Supplies. The sun is now beginning to trek rather low upon the horizon…spending the night outside in such an unfamiliar land is unappealing at best and outright dangerous at the worst.

There is one silver lining in the midst of this mess. Directly ahead, the beach curves up a gentle slope until it meets forest, some manner of building visible through the trees. Further exploration of this area will reveal a dilapidated building of sorts; the architecture is indiscernible to even the most skilled eye. Despite looking as if it has seen better days, there are areas that offer some form of shelter...and who knows what else. Just because it appears uninhabited doesn’t mean you won’t wind up pleasantly, or unpleasantly, surprised.



So what shall you do from here, traveller? There is land to be explored, strangers to meet, friends to reunite with. Supplies to inspect and plenty of questions in need of being said aloud. Choose your path, make haste, and above all else: survive. And whatever you will, take heart.

Your story is about to begin anew.

Kinda? I mean, I've been in a survival situation before--[Newt glances over, and stops carving at the coconut when he notices Osomatsu trying to put the stones in with his hands]--dude! Use a stick to place them! Don't burn yourself!

Look--here--[and he's grabbing one of the thinner pieces of gathered driftwood and shoving it at him] Use that. We haven't starved long enough yet for food to be worth burning yourself for. [Believe him, he'd know lol]

[he didn't know! you've got to explain this shit to him thoroughly. he's an idiot]

Okay, okay! [he takes the stick, and pushes the rocks in. oh, yeah. this is much easier]

You just know so much... about everything. It's really neat.

[ohnehalfte]

[Is it really NEET, Oso? Is it? Uhhhhh anyway, Newt can't quite help but look rather pleased about that] Well, I mean, six doctorates plus experience in this sorta thing...you get to know stuff, you know? [NOT TO BRAG OR ANYTHING who is he kidding he is totally bragging sorry not sorry]

[Osomatsu's eyes widen!]

Six doctorates? Why'd you need so many?

[ohnehalfte]

[Newt's grin widens at the way Osomatsu's eyes go wide--but he shrugs a bit at the question] I got a lotta interests, dude. When you graduate from MIT at 14, you've got a hell of a lot more time on your hands to explore more stuff.

[holy crap. Osomatsu's dealing with an actual genius here... the words nerd alert cross through his mind only briefly. he's actually impressed more than put off]

Geez! So, like, what are you? A scientist, or something?

[ohnehalfte]

Yep! [it's definitely a brag lol] And a really damn good one, if I do say so myself. [he pauses, shrugging a shoulder, still looking way too proud of himself] Not that I am the only one that says so, but y'know, details. [He pulls the butterfly knife out, flipping it over to knock a small circle of coconut he's carved into the center of it, leaving a small hole. He shakes the coconut gently, and looks rather pleased to hear a sloshing sound]

[guess it takes all kinds. Osomatsu is... he doesn't have anything to brag about. he's lazy, not that smart, and he doesn't have a job. hell, he didn't even go to college. and he's never really cared enough before about all of this, so why does he feel bad now?

he watches the other man work, then looks at the fire. well, soon they'd have food, and maybe then he'd feel better] Thanks for, uh, helping me out, by the way. My name's Osomatsu.

[ohnehalfte]

[Newt grins widely at that] No problem, dude. I'm Newt--it's nice to meet you! [he's setting down his knife and holding out his hand to shake]

[Osomatsu's brought out of his thoughts when Newt offers him his hand. he hesitates for just a second before forcing a grin onto his face, and shaking his hand]

Newt! [he'll remember that] If I forget, I'm just gonna call you Professor.

[ohnehalfte]

[for all his intelligence, Newt is pretty shit when it comes to people usually, so he completely misses any hesitation--and then laughs at that, shaking his head]

No way, dude--if you forget, just ask! Even when I was teaching, I had my students call me Newt.

[Oh, yeah, the coconut--] Hey, pass me that bag of rice, yeah? We'll put some in the coconut, and then the coconut water will cook it once we put the coconut on the fire, and then we'll have some awesome rice.

[okay, so professor is a no-go. Osomatsu chuckles, because he was half-joking, anyway. he reaches over to his bag of rice and pulls it over. his stomach chooses then to grumble]

Yaaay! Awesome rice! [he's so ready! Osomatsu's a good eater]

[ohnehalfte]

[right, Newt's gonna grab that bag of rice, then, and pour some in, eyeballing about how much will be good in the water before he sets that aside, and slowly and carefully moves to hold the coconut over the circle of rocks that Osomatsu moved into place--before dropping it down in quickly and jerking his hands back. He shakes them out a bit, but lets out a breath of relief]

Okay--done. Now we just gotta let it cook.
