I’ll take my throne, lay it on a mountain

Who: Our volunteer mountaineers
What: Two parties split up to scale the mountain from two sides, planning to meet at it’s peak. Shenanigans occur along the way.
When: September 13th to 16th
Where: Group 1: G3, H2, G2 || Group 2: F3, F2, G2

Word spreads quickly in a small community such as this. What was originally intended to be a small party turned into something much larger- and on the day Chara planned to leave for the mountain, it’s not one, but two parties that make off for it’s peak.

Group 1, led by Chara, moves off during the early hours of the morning, seeking to search the furthest part of the mountain by following the river upwards. The path is longer and more winding- however, they are unhampered in when they can travel.

Group 2, led by Ardyn, takes off after the sun has set- due to the needs of multiple members to avoid the sun’s harsh glare. Their route takes them up the closest side of the mountain, which provides an easier path- however, they may only travel whilst the sun is set.

At current, once inside, Newt's decided to take a bit of a chill pill before going and exploring some more. That might be because of the arduous hike up the mountain, but that might also be because of the eggs he's got cradled carefully within his leather jacket, which he's shed and made into some sort of impromptu nest along with some grass tucked around them to help keep them insulated. He's now tucked inside the ruins, sitting near the entrance but definitely out of the sun with the jacket-nest in his lap, curiously running fingers over the tops of the four eggs he's managed to bring with him.

He'll be up for exploring in a minute, but right now he wants to take a moment to get a good look at these eggs.

Planning a very large omelet, or are you intending to hatch them?

Oh, I'm definitely intending to hatch them. [Newt glances up at Muffet, grinning] If they survive the trek down, anyway. If not, we at least know where their nesting grounds are, so we could always get more.

Hm... I'm trying to remember what I've seen on this island so far that might lay eggs. I know there are those little crab-like things all over the beach, but they're probably a bit small for these.

Perhaps it's those feathered lizards? Then again, for all I know about this place, it could be those dogs with all the extra legs. Or something else entirely.

They're those creatures that look like archaeopteryx! We founding a nesting ground of theirs on our way up, so I grabbed a couple eggs, partially to see if they're edible, but also to see if it's possible to raise a couple. [HE IS VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS] Having a trained pet like that could be really really useful!

Well, that's a lucky find.

[She giggles at the thought.]

Just be careful to make sure the training works properly- I've seen them steal small objects before, they might end up being quite a handful.

Eh, I'm okay with that! [the corner of Newt's mouth quirks, conspiratorially] That just means they're smart.

Just make sure they don't outsmart you, then. I'd hate to see you cheated out of house and home- especially since we've only just found these buildings.

[Newt wrinkles his nose a bit at that, and glances back down at the eggs] ....maybe just hatching one would be better.

The islands' weather and his own insensitivity leave Ginko restricted to the shadows during the day, anyway - but with the sun so much stronger up here than it usually is, he finds himself taking extra care to stay pressed as far into the shade as he can. This kind of sun would probably leave him unable to move within less than a minute, and he'd rather not risk that.

However, focused as he is on staying out of the way of the sun, he does take notice of someone nearby. It's not even the eggs that draw Ginko's attention, so much as the fact that he... he recognizes this guy.

Newt looks different, for sure; the last time Ginko saw him, he was all dark plating and glowing blue teeth. Hell, the first time he saw him, he'd already started changing - but not enough for him to be unrecognizable now.

Ginko stands up, steadying himself against the wall of the ruins, and makes his way closer to where Newt is sitting. His tail keeps twitching back and forth behind him; he's not really sure what to expect here, given... everything.

"Newt? You're-- how long have you been here?"

Newt starts a bit at the voice--he was pretty involved in those eggs he's got cradled in his lap, tbh--but he glances behind himself, blinking owlishly up at the...lizard person? Something? Definitely doesn't look entirely human. He can't help but stare for a moment, thrown off balance less because of the person's appearance and more because, well...he doesn't know who this guy is. "Uh...?" Newt frowns, trying to search through his memory of three different worlds (including his own) to figure out how he might know this person. But just...nope. Drawing a complete blank.

Wow. He's never been on the receiving end of that 'I know you but you don't know me' thing before. He's not entirely sure how to respond, except: "Uh...I...I think you have the wrong Newt, dude."

The lack of recognition on Newt's face isn't enough to tip him off on its own, but... well, it's not the first time he's had this experience, either. Understanding sets in immediately at those words, and Ginko's ears drop.

"...Oh. Yeah, that would explain the... lack of scales..." That last part is mumbled under his breath, like he knows how ridiculous it probably sounds. He looks away, rubbing sheepishly at his neck. "Sorry. About... that."

Yo, dude, he can see those ears drop; he's sitting right here. But he does turn though, scooching around on the floor so he can look up at Ginko more fully. "It's cool, dude, I've just never been on, uh, this side of the conversation before. You wanna tell me who you are and also maybe address that thing about scales, because if an alternate version of me has scales, I wanna know where that came from." He probably shouldn't be that interested in that, but let's be real, he absolutely 100% is--and in his enthusiasm, can't help but grin, warping the scars on his face as he reaches out to pat the floor in front of him. "C'mon--sit!"

Hey, if he could keep his own dumb added-on monster parts from giving away his emotions all the time and making other people feel bad in the process, he absolutely would. But here he is.

He... also isn't at all surprised to hear that Newt wants to hear about the scales situation. Of course he would, even if this is a different Newt.

Ginko only hesitates for a moment before sitting down, taking note of those scars but not really staring. Most people had some kind of scars in Ryslig, too; from here, Newt could probably see the jagged interruptions in the fur on Ginko's shoulders and back. He tucks his tail close to himself, wrapping it around his own feet.

"...Guess you're gonna need to hear some about where I was last for the scales thing to make any sense, huh."

Fuckin' Ryslig.

"Yeah, I think that'd help." The corner of Newt's mouth quirks a bit at that--before he's leaning in a bit with interest. "Is this place your original world or no?"

"Definitely not." No hesitation there. "Before Ryslig, I was in Japan-- from some time before when you're from, judging from... a few conversations.

"Ryslig was... well, kind of like here, people seemed to just be brought there every so often. But after about a month, they... uh, started changing." He combs his claws idly through the fur on his tail, staring down at it. "I was completely human when I first arrived."

Newt's eyes widen a bit behind his glasses--not at the mention of new people showing up, but: "Wait..so just being there changed your body physically? How long were you there?"

"Feeling clucky, are we?" They wouldn't have taken him for the maternal type, but here's the proof. Chara offers what could be taken as a friendly smile, if not rather strained by a clear lack of sleep and far too much sun.

Don't hog, sir. They'd also like to have a look.

Newt glances up at the voice, before he grins. "Hey, Kidwun." His grin widens a bit, cheeky. "Didn't we decide I was an amphibian?" He snickers a bit at his own joke, but then shifts so they can see the eggs better. "Nah, we came on these nests of those Archaeopteryx-kinda birds, and they had some nests, so I grabbed a couple to see if I could raise them."

"Unless you've been carting a turtle-crab's egg around this entire time, we might have to rethink that conclusion." But of course, he clarifies upon that mystery quickly enough. Chara examines them keenly, arching a brow.

"Wouldn't it be easier to just eat them?"

[ohnehalfte]

"Well, I mean, yeah, of course that'd be easier." Newt huffs, resting his elbows on his knees. "But then I wouldn't be able to study how they grow and what kind of creatures they are. The more you know about something, the better judgement you can make about it, and we don't want to hunt a food source to extinction, because then we're fucked, and we don't know how long we'll be here."

"...Point taken." He's living with Sans and Wade. They know that; have seen him enter and exit their home far too often not to have understood the implications. That he's a scientist; perhaps that shouldn't be a surprise either.

But there's some genuine curiosity in their expression, nonetheless.

"Are you basing your expectations on how they'll grow off something from your own world, or just- winging it?"

Instead of being offended, Newt just laughs. Since they’re a child, he’s taken it more as just curiosity than anything malicious. “Well, I’m basing it off a combination of birds ive seen in my world, the fossils we have of creatures that are extinct that look like this, and my own observations of their behavior. But...you wanna know a secret?” Newt grins conspiratorially, leaning closer.

...A secret. He really doesn't seem like the type capable of pulling a fast one on anyone, but they still pause for a moment, leaning in only as close as they need to.

"I'm all ears."

“Most science is just controlled winging it.” Newt’s grin widens. “Sure, some people might act like what they’re doing is completely controlled, but it isn’t. There’s always some outlier—some sort of element of chance that they’re trying to test.” He sits back a bit, still grinning, looking a bit smug, like he’s just shared the secrets of the universe or something.
