What: THERE IS SOME COOKING GOING ON AND IT PROBABLY IS DELICIOUS
When: Around the 21st of September!
Where: ISLET 2, THE ONLY ISLET WITH A WOOD STOVE
Warnings: DELICIOUS FOOD AHEAD, PLEASE USE YOUR OWN DISCRETION
If you happen to be in the area of the second Islet, where a make-shift hut has become the home of two local pokemon trainers, you may find yourself smelling something amazing. Well, amazing if you enjoy fish. With their new wood-burning stove, Luna and Guzma's cooking game has upped itself tremendously. Rather, Guzma's cooking game has upped itself. Luna has gained a rank in firestarting and firekeeping. It's amazing, living together with a guy like Guzma-- mainly because Luna would never have thought it could happen. But here he is, standing around and cooking fish like he's been doing it for years...probably. Not that Luna knows. Guzma's a pretty outstanding mystery to her in the first place. Weird, kind of spooky. Pretty negative. But everyone knows him, so he's not shy. His pokemon adore him, so he can't be all bad.
It doesn't stop both her pups from being on high guard. Luna'd be lying if she said that there weren't times she was on guard herself-- but having someone who knows where you come from is something that she's decided to not take for granted. Someone with enough knowledge and history to ground her and remind her that home exists...
....somewhere.
Islet #2's hut is...pretty organized, but definitely split into two sides. With the addition of the wood burning stove, the two have tried to insulate their abode with a large tarp, though they still lack a proper roof. There are two strangely hung hammocks on opposite sides-- one of them has a very impressive looking tigershark-skin blanket draped across it invitingly. They seem to be hung by an insect's silken threads, and are very secured to what little they could be fastened to on the worn-down parts of the hut.
On a side of the hut, seashells hang of all types and sizes. They're pretty to look at. There's a small pile of them on the floor, along with a bag that says 'L U N A' in worn letters. There's fur on it-- perhaps someone sleeps here?
For now, this temporary home is fine.

When Ignis is seated, Guzma goes to check on the bundle some, just to make sure nothing is burning or coming undone. All is well, and he leaves it in to cook a while longer. Shouldn't be much, perhaps just long enough for them to talk more.]
Mm, likewise. Got lucky 'nuff to get one when I first got here. S'been a saving grace for a lotta different reasons. [A useful tool, definitely - for protection, cooking, a makeshift razor, and the work on their home. Guzma chuckles a bit, at the joke, glad it;s not too much of a sore spot for the guy. Makes talking a little more easy - when he doesn't have to dodge bullets.] Not gonna lie, man, y'all do well on your feet as is. Don't hold you back none, yeah? That's impressive.
[GOOD for each other? Again, Guzma is glad for the blindness, as awful as the thought is, and he raises a brow at his companion here with a frown. He disagrees big time - the brat would be far better off without him in her life. There are other, better, more capable people to look out for her. She'd be safer with them to look after her...not a thug who was once her enemy, and who is violent and angry and at his last thread of patience all the time.
For be frank, he's not at all sure why Luna still hangs around. There's so few reasons he can think of as to why she would. Familiarity? Maybe, but it seems cheap. Even then, he...can't say her presence is as distasteful as he expected it to be. They've come a long way already, if they can share a meal together like this.]
Huh? Oh, uh...guessing y'all don't know what a pokemon is, yeah? Unless the kid told you, or you met hers. Anyway, a Torchic's kinda what you expect - it's a chick. A bird pokemon, 'bout maybe a foot tall with bright, orange feathers...but its wings are real downy and yellow - bright yellow. Oh, and, uh...its got three yellow feathers that stick right up on its head. One straight up, and two skewed off to the left and right.
They're fire types, a little, baby fire-spittin' chicken. Heard they starters down in Hoenn, I think. Or was it Sinnoh? Nah, wait--that's the penguin... [Fuck, he can't remember.]/small>

[As Ignis speaks, he turns his right hand out and an ornate dagger--really, it's closer to the size of a short sword than anything--appears in it with a cracking of blue crystal. He spins the weapon absently making it very clear how used to handling it he is, even without his eyesight.]
Oh, it holds me back plenty, but I'm also a stubborn man. Perhaps, too much so if you ask my friends. I don't like being a burden to anyone. It's not something my line of work allows.
[And there he goes flipping the dagger over into his left hand. From the unconscious way Ignis is handling the blade, it's almost as if having the weight in his hand is calming. He certainly won't deny missing how it feels to handle both of them. After all, it's not like he's had much chance to fight with his knives lately.]
Pokemon? I'm afraid she didn't mention them while we were talking. As I mentioned, the meeting was brief and I think she was more worried about my condition than talking about herself. I was quite down when we met.
[Not to mention exhausted, worried, and trying to bottle up a whole lot of trauma. He really has come a long way already, hasn't he?]
It sounds quite adorable, almost like a chocobo chick. Just one that spits fire.
[He laughs suddenly, finally allowing the dagger to come to rest across one knee.]
Considering the meaning of my name, it's rather fitting that's the first Pokemon I learn about. I suppose if I had one, though, Prompto would attempt to run off with it. His love of chocobos is legendary.
Do all people from your world have Pokemon? You said 'starter' so I assume some are more suited to youngsters like Luna?
no subject
Weapons, especially guns, are items that make Guzma's skin crawl. And yet he has been musing with the idea that he should learn to use one - a bow, maybe - since it's just such a useful tool and skill to have. He hates having to resort to that, but it's just not safe without something like that - something inorganic - to fight with. His pokemon have done amazing things, but he couldn't live with himself if they ever got really hurt or--]
Pokemon are creatures back home, where I'm from, with powers n' abilities specific to their typing. Some are aquatic, some fly, some are bugs, others what spit flame or manipulate plantlife. They're invaluable partners to have...and it's a Trainer's duty to raise 'em from small, weak li'l things into strong, capable fighters. We depend on 'em - not just for battling, but for companionship, protection, and other stuff. Alola, my region of the world, has pokemon that work specifically for people doing certain jobs. Charizard fly y'round between the islands, Lapras floats y'all on calm waters on the islands, Machamp and Tauros help lug heavy lumber and items 'round, or smash up boulders on construction sites.
Surprised the kid didn't tell you - she's a real tough trainer. Stronger'n even me, but I don't think she likes to brag 'bout it. But yeah, like the rest of us, she started out as just a rookie. Kids are picked to get a pokemon when they're eleven in Alola, sometimes sooner'n that if they go out and catch one themselves. [He recalls preschoolers with their Caterpies and Yungoos, playing around in the grass with them and fighting weak pokemon on Melemele.] But the ones with real potential get to go on a journey...with the first pokemon they either get from the Kahuna or the one they catch. That's their starter - the first one they get. The one they choose to start their journey with.
[A bond for life.]

[Ignis voice is full of both genuine awe and child-like excitement. It's a rather strong reaction from one who doesn't usually show them, but he's all but enthralled by the idea. There's no such bond between humans and animals back home. The closest, perhaps, to that is when a chocobo has been with them long enough that its fondness for its rider makes it brave enough to momentarily duck into battle. While every little bit of aid is appreciated, Ignis knows both Prompto and Noctis would much rather their feathered friends stay out of harm's way.
Oh, but how much would Prompto and Noctis enjoy living in a world like the one Guzma describes? They would have a never ending supply of animals to love. Why, by the sound of it, Noct could even have a fish Pokemon if he wanted. It would be a much happier life than the one he has to fac-
The excitement on Ignis' face fades slightly as he pushes away such dark thoughts. He takes a moment to collect himself and then focuses back on Guzma.]
That explains why she seemed so wise for her age. Wise and kind. I'm sure her journey taught her so much. And what of you? Where you able to bring your partners here?
no subject
He's quiet, waiting and watching his companion, jumping up a little when the silence is broken suddenly. He clears his throat, standing up to check on the food he prepared earlier, using a long stick to pull the leafy bundle out to check the contents as he talks.]
...Yeah, she's prob'ly been through more'n any Trial-goer I know. [Looks good, everything should be ready to eat now. He uses his hoodie to secure the bundle without burning his hands, rushing a bit to place it down near where they were sitting. The smell is strong and savory, with just a hint of char - very nice indeed.] Mm? Well, uh...I-I got two of 'em. Trainers usually carry up to six at a time, but I got five normally on my team...and on;y two here. Same with the kid.
[His own tone shifts, and Guzma utters a long sigh, it's still hard, knowing the other three are waiting back home for him. He misses them, thinks and worries about them constantly... His partners, and his very best friends - they've seen him through many tough times. Guzma adores his pokemon more than the people in his life, to an extent, so being without even one is painful. The ache has dulled some but...it's never really gone.]
no subject
[Ignis sounds as if he knows exactly what Guzma is feeling and maybe he does, at least a little. Not having Gladio there has left his team without their strong, sturdy foundation. While not the same as missing most of a Pokemon team, there is still a hole in the group. A rather large one at that, and considering the Shield so often balances out Ignis own negative traits, the advisor strongly suspects he's feeling Gladio's absence more than the rest of the team.]
May I ask which of your team were lucky enough to come along? What are they like?
[As he speaks, the part of his mind that is the chef is pulling apart the smell of the food now that it is closer. It's a guessing game he places with himself often. How many things can he identify without seeing or tasting the dish? Food is simpler here, of course, but that just means people tend to get more creative when preparing it.]
I've noticed cooking things in palm leaves adds a bit of flavor to them. What the flavor is varies by what is cooked and the leaves themselves. It's been an adventure so far trying to figure out the variables.
[And then there are most of his friends who just want to eat and not worry about the science of the whole thing. They haven't been extremely helpful so far, much to Ignis' dismay.]
no subject
[Guzma hisses quietly through clenched teeth. He meant it as a sort of mumble, but with Ignis' heightened sense of hearing, he's sure to pick up on it. And while he'd argue no one but a fellow Pokemon Trainer would understand the loss, he remains entirely silent on that end. The question about the pokemon he does have is a bittersweet one. He still has his beloved partners, yes, but it's still a reminder that the others were still lost. Count your blessings, be happy with what you have...seems like a crappy way to think.]
Golisopod and Ariados - both bug type pokemon. They my specialty. Ariados is a big ol' spider 'bout the height of y'all's knee if she lifts herself up on her legs. he's red and got big glossy purple eyes and a long, pointed horn right between 'em. There's a big black band on her abdomen, and two black spots below that. From the black band, she's got two huge stingers - prob'ly the length of y'all's forearm - that are prehensile a bit. They're striped yellow and purple, same as her legs. Real colorful lady.
Golisopod's uh...he's a bit harder to describe. ...Sorry, bro. [It's not really to Ignis, but to his pokemon. I mean, how would you describe a creature like Golisopod?] Goli's been with me longest, ever since I was a kid. I had him since he was still a tiny thing.
[Guzma's working as he talks, untying the bundle and hissing as he picks up a hot, wrapped fish to place onto a palm leaf before Ignis, with a plentiful helping of vegetables. The smell alone is amazing - an even balance of sweet, savory, and mild char.]
Yeah, them oldies way the heck back used to wrap up their goodies in palm leaves or banana leaves. There's actually a whole lotta dishes in Alola what use leaves to prep the dishes. I ain't no cook, but you'll see a bunch of that sorta traditional cuisine at luaus for them tourists and stuff. Restaurants and festivals set up big parties where they cook the "food of the islands" a lot.
Each island had its own unique flavor too, and I gota say...even being from Ulaula myself, Akala's got the best of all four. [He shakes his head.] The ranch near the base'a Wela volcano...the soil there is fertile as, giving them ranch pokemon plenty'a greens to nibble on, what makes the products they give out real, real good. [You haven't lived until you've had dairy made from Paniola's Milktanks, and beefsteak from grass fed Tauros.] Then there's fresh fruits and exotic plants 'round the Lush Jungle, and the water 'bout Brooklet hill gets run through a bunch so it keeps all them good minerals 'fore it rejoins the ocean.
You want some dang good Alolan eats? Y'all high-tail it to Akala Island. Ain't nothing more authentic then a meal made there by an auntie what'll invite y'over for a bite. [Holy crap, all this talk of food is making his hunger spike. Guzma takes out his knife, cutting the bindings of the palm leaves around the fish, beaming at the crisp skin and the steam that pours from the contents. He cuts it apart from where he gutted the fish, humming at the pleasant color of the meat.] ...'Fraid this won't be nothing like that though. A for effort though, yeah?
no subject
Oh dear, they would have to be bugs, wouldn't they? And a spider no less.
[The advisor shakes his head, an amused look on his face. Interestingly enough, with his attention focused on something else, the blade Ignis was previously fidgeting with has vanished from where it rested in his lap.]
Mind you, I have no issues with bugs or spiders, but my two friends are a different story. Do let me apologize in advance for the inevitable screaming that will happen when they see them for the first time. For all the daemons and other creatures we have fought, they are both somehow still scared senseless by spiders.
[Granted, Ignis has his own fair share of bad memories tied to spider daemons, but from the way Guzma describes Ariados, she seems a very far cry from the daemons he knows. Why, she sounds almost cute with her wide eyes and bright colors.]
Perhaps in the future should both you and your pokemon come to trust me, Golisopod may let me touch him? I'm still learning to 'see' though touch, but it quite amazing the pictures one can paint in their minds with it.
[Of course, smell is also a good way to paint pictures when one can't see and despite it's simplicity, the meal that Guzma has cooked smells wonderful.]
There's nothing wrong with rustic once and a while. One cannot properly recognize just how splendid an Altissian Carpaccio is without knowing how plain a garula steak is in comparison. Trust me, I've both made and tasted both dishes enough to know.
[Ignis pauses suddenly, realizing it was a mistake to mention a dish from Altissia, because it causes his mind to drift back to the summoning, saddening him if for a slightly different reason than usual.]
It's a shame the rite and subsequent invasion laid waste to so much of the city. There's nothing quite like enjoying a fine dish of salmon or trout while overlooking the very canals where it was caught not long before.
no subject
...That right? [Guzma's expression darkens considerably. Oh, please, do go on. Do remind him how many people hate insects - especially spiders - because of the idiotic stigma that they're ugly, detestable hellspawn that need to be stomped on, despite the fact that they're among the most useful of the bug family. They control the population of other, harmful insects. Sure, wild Ariados are dangerous as hell, but caught ones can become sweet and docile. Case in point, his own, who loves having her rump scratched and would curl up in anyone's lap like a cat if they let her.] That's a darned shame, Ariados is real friendly. And the silk she spins makes some fine nets, ropes, and even clothing is y'all can weave it right. Clothes made with Ariados silk are durable as heck, and fetch a real pretty penny in the fashion world.
Not only that, but she's been one'a the more useful of my two pokemon. Prob'ly wouldn't have gotten anywhere near close to finishing half the work I did on my roof without 'er, actually. [His voice is low and gruff, like he's fighting to keep the sarcasm out of his voice.] I'd be real 'preciative if y'all would let your buddies know she's a good sort. ...Already had a handful'a people here threaten to kill her, and I'm done near the end of my rope with that.
[Meaning, the next person to threaten his pokemon may either get a fist or a goddamn knife to their throat. He's sick and tired of toeing the line between people senseless fears and the safety of his friends.
Guzma ignores the latter half of their conversation, having tuned out a bit to stuff food into his mouth. At the least, he makes an offhanded grunt - mouth full - to indicate he at least heard..something. He heard Ignis speak, anyway. But his mood has been soured by the awful reminder that his pokemon aren't safe on this island. Not even amongst the people here, who'd shoot first and ask question later. It...scares him. Very much. He can't let his pokemon hunt without being nearby, for fear that she might be attacked.]
no subject
Such a petty emotion doesn't have much of a chance to linger, though. Even if he can't see Guzma's expression, Ignis is getting better and better at feeling changes in the atmosphere around him. The change in Guzma's tone has just darkened and weighed down the previously light atmosphere a great deal.]
Certainly. I will make sure to explain to Noctis and Prompto as soon as I can that Ariados and Golisopod are your partners just as Gladio and I are theirs. They may still be startled, but th-
[Ignis' voice suddenly cuts off as a look of horror crosses his face.]
What do you mean people have threatened to kill her? She's your companion. It would be murder.
[He best not ever find out who those people were or else they will find themselves at the wrong end of the dagger he was just fidgeting with.]
no subject
Here? It's a whole other thing entirely. People will not hesitate to eradicate them, and he's experienced it firsthand, thrice already. It's a sobering thought, just how outside of his comfort zone he is...how beyond the norm or everyday life in Alola he is. Never thought he'd miss the dull life of the islands...
Murder. The word makes him stab his fish a little more, ah, vigorously than he would naturally. That's exactly what it is. He, or anyone else, never said it aloud, but that's what it is. Murder. Killing someone he loves and trusts - his invaluable partners who have been with him his whole life. Because they're not what others would view as "desirable". They're pests. Scary. Dirty. Gross. But it's hard to get mad when the one pointing a gun at them is a small child, who's seen horrors well beyond anything Guzma could imagine...or a timid little Mouse, just trying to do right.
Still--]
You the first person to say it, but yeah...s'what it'd be. [He's quiet for a few minutes, picking at the food on his leaf, wondering if he should eat more. He's lost his appetite.] 'Fraid not many share the sentiment though, my man; if it's a bug, then it's gotta be killed, yeah? Tch! Barely anyone here knows what a pokemon is, neither, so all they see is a monster.
I can't let 'em wander too far outta sight, or let 'em out of their balls for too long no more...just cuz'a that. Cuz'a the stigma they got surrounding 'em, and how they look. [But neither of 'em would hurt a soul, unless they were protecting their trainer from harm. Truly, Guzma has with him his most friendly and agreeable pokemon out of the five he has. Ariados is more like a cat or a playful dog, and Golisopod is slow and calm, a gentle giant who prefers to meditate and float in the shallows, blowing bubbles than gobble up people.]
no subject
[Ignis has no idea how large these balls they live in are, but they can't be that large if Guzma keeps them with him. The pokemon, on the other hand, sound as if they are quite large which means it can't be very pleasant spending so much time in them. Something has to change; it's just figuring out the how that is the hard part. Fortunately, Ignis has a few ideas. Will they work? He's not sure, but he has a feeling that as long as there is a chance, Guzma will likely try.]
Stigmas are hard to break, but it can be done. Just because an animal may be scary to look at doesn't mean they can't be helpful too. We just need to let people see how helpful they can be. Instead of hiding them so much, it may be better to keep them out--only when you are around to keep them safe, of course. Let people see them doing helpful things or even playing. Let them see Ariados making silk to help you with projects. Golisopod...
[Shoot, without a description it's hard to think of something the other pokemon can do and Ignis finds himself falling silent for a few moments as he thinks.]
...can he carry things? Help move things that a human can't maybe? We just need to replace 'scary' as the first thing people think of when they see them. If they think 'helpful' instead, then they will be less prone to foolish violent reactions.
no subject
But yes, it's also restricting. When he can, Guzma really prefers to let them out to enjoy the air and the sunshine and get in some exercise. He still needs to train them, too, and training isn't simply battling and practicing moves. It's about staying fit as well, and just general care.]
Oh yeah, he can carry loads more'n even me. Golisopod's real strong - probably good at woodcutting, too, considering his claws. Actually, one hard whack with 'em could smash a few rocks I'd think. Nothing too big, but yeah...he's got a lotta muscle. [Guzma hums thoughtfully, scratching his chin.] Does wonders with fishing, too. Helped me catch this load here, actually...and he big 'nuff to ferry one adult and maybe a kid 'round in the water.
no subject
[When it comes to physical labor, they are certainly more useful than Ignis is at the very least. Fortunately, being blind hasn't taken away his ability to plan and so he continues to do so, melding previous thoughts with new information.]
Would you mind if I spread word that you and they would be willing to help with building projects? Even if you don't get many takers, it will help get word of their usefulness out to others. Perhaps I could even have them do a few things for me so I can give examples of their skill?
no subject
[Really, pokemon are very difficult to train sometimes - they're living creatures with wills and minds of their own. Each one has its own personality and does what it wants - they can feel abandonment, sadness, everything a human feels. They can also resent those that treat them unfairly or unkindly. A pokemon is only as good as its trainer - that's a lesson he learned when he was a child, from the island kahuna, and he took that lesson to heart.]
Man, I'd love for you to do that - saves me a heap of trouble getting people to feel comfortable near 'em. Won't let my partners work for free though, 'course. [He shrugs. Sorry, but give and take is still as normal here as it is in every world. Nothing is free, though he may do a few small jobs without compensation, especially for those he likes. Speaking of--] But a job for you is on the house, homie, I think y'all earned it after what you doing for me and my pokemon.
Just gimme a heads up on what y'all need, and when, and I'll shoot over, yeah?
