greatcleavage: (sometimes things do go right?)

It's like being first level all over again! [Mostly OPEN]

Who: Roy Greenhilt and YOU?
What: Roy tries to sneak out to explore, brings back fantasy-chickens, and puts those ranks in Knowledge(architecture and engineering) to good use!
When: 9/19-9/21
Where: Enso
Warnings: None?

9/19 (Closed to Mercy)

If he thought at all that Mercy would object to his intention, he might have hid them better. But after the disaster of the first mission, he honestly thought she would be in no hurry at all to plunge headlong into likely disaster once again.

So without any subtlety at all, Roy laid out his meager supplies on the floor of the 'room' he called his own in their shared hut, taking an assessment of his stock. "Should be enough for a day," he muttered to himself as he checked the sharpness of the razor blade he'd found in a knapsack, "if I stick to the river and rely on it for water wherever possible..."

9/20 Chickens!

As sunset approached the island, a triumphant Roy Greenhilt returned to the mana pool with two brightly-colored bludrocks held carefully in his arms. A judicious application of oats, and a willingness to bring more than one at a time, had made the creatures docile enough to submit to this short indignity of a trip, and Roy couldn't resist.

"Good news!" he called out to the pool at large, and anyone who might be within earshot. "We've found a renewable source of eggs!"

This was, he had to admit, something of a come-down from epic battles against tyrants and nefarious fiends -- but it was also a clean victory and a necessary one. So Roy was perfectly willing to smile about his success and feel good about it, even if the sight of him carrying two birds was a fairly silly one.

Now they needed to make a coop, though, and prepare for long-term care -- especially if they wanted to relocate more of the bludrocs.

9/21

Roy gave a fairly direct impression, being a man who wore armor regularly and invariably had a massive greatsword worn on his back. One might be forgiven, then, for being surprised at his current activity -- making crude sketches on a large stone with a smaller stone that resembled nothing so much as blueprints.

He also had a tendency to comment on his work when others approached, even as he didn't look up. "I'm relatively certain that with available wood materials we can construct reasonably solid buildings, even accounting for the terrain. I think our ideal would be to develop either brickmaking or a means to quarry stone, but until then, we work with what we have. So besides a coop for the birds, we need storage areas, which I think we might as well make all part of one centralized building...."

He might be able to go on like this for some time, mind.

[Muffet grimaces and nods.]

Likewise. I can't help but feel that the obstacle we keep running into is communication and coordination- odds are good that for every problem we're currently working on, there's some combination of people already in our group and resources we already have that would solve it, but we have no way of easily letting everyone know what we have or what we want.

[She misses the Undernet so much.]

If what I remember of my old history classes is any indication, actual governments were never entirely successful at doing that, either. Although perhaps I'm being a bit cynical.

That said, I suspect that open, reliable, and easily accessible communication would do a lot to mitigate the problem without... vastly overreaching ourselves. Not everyone would be inclined to speak up and volunteer, but at least anyone inclined to do so could.

[Muffet notes the unusual emphasis on the term 'lawful' and suspects there's a context she isn't getting there, but she's not sure if it would be rude to ask.]

I would think it would depend on the code of law in question, but you're not wrong. My people always tended towards a more... relaxed rulership than most human nations- getting an audience with His Majesty generally involved just walking up to him while he was working in the garden and saying hello- but that may have been more because a strict government just wasn't as necessary under the circumstances.

After all, we've always had a fairly low crime rate. Not to mention the advantage, such as it was, of living in a little underground kingdom with a population small enough that a monarch could feasibly get to know all of his people in person.

[Muffet is understating things a bit, for the sake of politeness- when it comes to anything more severe than petty theft or vandalism, the typical monster crime rate is 'none'. Human society had definitely taken some getting used to, back when they were first integrating the two species. She refuses to judge them for that- they're different peoples, and humans had different struggles to overcome than they did.]

A society isn't necessarily a government. Having everyone meet face-to-face has obvious logistical issues, but if we have anyone here with the technical skill to build a network-

[She stops midsentence, as she abruptly realizes one obvious reason why Roy might not be considering online communication as an option, beyond the lack of resources to build anything.]

Ah. It occurs to me that I may be making some assumptions about what technology is common in other worlds, the way it is at home. Does your world have a kind of device called a 'computer'?

Yes, that does explain a bit.

[Honestly, the greatsword and metal armor probably should have clued her in already, but everyone's been having to get by without much technology right now anyway, so it didn't occur to her.]

My explanation may not be very helpful, since this really isn't my area of expertise, but... Imagine a flat, glass panel that displays various words and images. If you touch the panel, you can input various commands to change the images it shows. It can act much like a library, storing information for people to access later- but if two or more people have working devices, they can also use them to send messages to each other, even across distances of thousands of miles.

No offense taken- after all, as I said, computers are hardly my specialty in any case. As far as I understand, 'pocket library' is fairly accurate, although I'm not entirely sure what a 'scrying globe' is.

[Honestly, add in 'stone of farspeech' to that combination and he's pretty much got it.]

Ah, yes, that sounds about right. And yes, I'm lamenting that fact myself. The truth of the matter is that even if I could avoid the entire problem of acquiring all the necessary materials by just asking the Storyteller for an already-completed device, there'd still be the issue of not knowing how to properly repair it and keep it working.

Perhaps I'm spoiled a bit, coming from a society where long-distance communication is a trivial, commonplace thing. I keep having to remind myself how long it took civilization to build up to that point, that I can't just expect thousands of years of progress to happen overnight because I've seen the product of it in advance...

Of course, dearie. Although, I should point out that I make my living as a baker, not a scientist, so all I can offer is common knowledge- it just happens to be common knowledge from a more technologically advanced culture.

If it helps, though, I may not be the only one to ask- I know there are a few people here from worlds that seem to have a similar level of technology to my home, and at least one from a place I'd say is much more advanced.

[Seriously, forget cell phones, Shepard is from fucking outer space.]
prettypurpleparlor: Bidding you good morning now (Dear friend)

Probably wrapping soon?

[personal profile] prettypurpleparlor 2017-10-17 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Why thank you. I find our talks rather pleasant, myself. It would be more pleasant if we weren't in a situation where we have to keep discussing how to survive, admittedly, but one can't have everything.

[Not that it would stop her from trying to have everything.]
prettypurpleparlor: A subtle web (I'm sure you're very welcome)

Wrapped unless you've got more to add.

Quite true- always good to take what profit one can out of difficult times.

[She smiles.]

If nothing else, it would make baking easier. I'll see who might be interested, and you keep working with our fluffy little friends, here. Bring some eggs around sometime, and I'd be happy to make you something.
