The beach smells wrong.

For a long minute, it's the only thought she can hold onto as she drifts in the twilight between sleep and waking. Her hands gently flex at the ground, and her face twitches into a frown at how soft the sand is to fingers that were expecting a coarse beach littered with seashells and refuse.

And the sky… her eyes crack open, blinking against the endless blue above them. Blue. Blessed, wonderful blue. She cranes her head back, expecting to see the white cliffs of Kholusia and stares dumbly for a few seconds when only the sight of a green jungle meets her.

Oh. Oh!

Castor comes the rest of the way awake all at once, scrambling to her knees in a flurry of damp sand and seaweed, looking about wildly - if she'd come here then maybe…No. No, she’d stepped through the Exarch’s portal alone, hadn’t she?

She sighs heavily to try and quiet the rapid beat of her heart, and begins to take stock of herself, examining her hands and arms, feeling about her face and neck and checking her clothing - so very different from the last time she lay upon this beach - for tears or other damage. Certainly, she feels fine save for a bone-deep fatigue and the general aches and pains of long days, but Gods, she’d come so close to…well, no use dwelling on it. She’s here for now, and if they’d been right, the danger is long passed.

She’s a mess, sat out on the beach like this, with her hair long and dishevelled and sand and seaweed caked and strewn all over her but the relief on her face is as bright as the sun above her.

"Well, neither of us are trying to kill each other anymore." It's not really a funny joke. Not really a joke at all. He's not good at humor, unless it's of the gallows variety. "You went home?"

That's not unusual, per se, but it's rare enough to be noticeable.

"I don't think it was that long here." He doesn't think, because he doesn't really know her that well, so who's to say how long it's been? He's not the best judge of time, either. For all he knows, it could have been a month.

"But if it wasn't just a dream, then I'd say you were gone for a bit." As opposed to just...disappearing and reappearing with no memory of what happened in between. Which has been known to happen.

"It's...yeah. A little." Not as common as just disappearing outright, but it's happened before. "Usually they have a weird dream or something. But sometimes they go...home, I guess. Which - you were only gone a few days, I'd guess."

A week away from the dragon? Yeah, that wasn't that far away to begin with. Meaning she wasn't gone for the weeks or months that have, in the past, snatched up someone unexpectedly.

"None of the above," says Tim. Which, thank god. "Just everything settling down again, I guess. As much as things ever settle down around here."

Not that things ever tend to settle down, but that's just part of island living.

"God where you come from?" He has to guess as much - he doesn't know shit about gods, other than the big one that you hear about all the damn time if you live in rural Alabama. Doesn't sound like someone from here, either. He's pretty sure he'd remember if there was someone by that name here.

Pretty sure. Can't really know, because his memory's worse than anything.

"Just the one, really, before I ended up here. People liked to talk Him up a lot, though." It doesn't matter what his stance on monotheism is, really, anymore - at this point, atheism isn't really an option. The Storyteller exists, and so do a hell of a lot of other gods, no matter what you want to call them.

It's not enough to put him into any real crisis of faith over it, though.

"Not sure it matters here anyway."
