August Event: The City is at War

AUGUST EVENT: THE CITY IS AT WAR
Who: Everyone!
What: You pick a side, or you pick up the pieces
When: August 16th to August 23rd
Where: Primarily Nastrandir, though also Ensō
Warnings: Violence, injury, forcibly altered mindsets via magical influence, possible character death. Potential (and fully optional) dissociation and identity crises. Potential (and fully optional) spontaneous combustion. Otherwise, tag as you go!

We All Lose in the End
On cue, the recently uncovered...and decidedly faulty merotome shatters on the morning of August 16th. Those close enough may recall an odd popping noise, like a lightbulb exploding, or find a shard of some odd, rubbery substance caught in their hair. The wave that shoots out across both islands barely seems to stir the air, but the aftershocks of its passing are to be felt for the week to come.

Whether or not you noticed the sweeping burst of light as it roared over just about everything, you're bound to hear the loud, wailing sound that starts to emit from all over Nastrandir. It sounds like the world's worst kind of alarm, and it just keeps on going.
That's to say nothing of the automatons rising steadily from the murk, or the fact that you might find that some of your fellow explorers are suddenly seeming a lot more trustworthy...and some of them are seeming a lot less. Maybe you latch onto personal terrors and preexisting grudges to justify the new onset of violence that starts to divide you from some of your fellows...or maybe it just feels right in some unquantifiable sense.

Regardless, those impacted by the merotome will find themselves gravitating towards Nastrindar sooner rather than later. Members of the Red Team are likely to initially head towards the ruins on C4 and D4. The swampy water flooding the island will eventually drive you to seek out more mountainous areas; the need to keep dry will vary from a strong desire to an absolute necessity, depending on the individual. As territorial instincts rear their head, this group will find that the war automatons no longer view them as hostiles. Now, these mechanical killers may even take basic orders, such as watching a certain location, fetching some basic materials, and, of course, upon whom they should aim their primary fire.

Meanwhile, the Blue Team will congregate along the shorelines, striking out inland through any route that keeps them close to a body of water - or in it. More likely to travel and fight in a pair or group, it's unlikely that members of this group will stay from the main party for too long, as their power is largely in numbers. While no automatons accompany them into battle, the waters surrounding and soaking into Nastrandir are their greatest ally, as they are capable of replenishing strength and healing minor wounds. Members of the Blue Team will be capable of continuing the fight for much longer than their Red counterparts, and their affinity with the waters will make them difficult to locate or pursue unless they wish it.

You Don't Get Another Shot
For those more resistant to the effects of this sudden shift will find that they're now unfortunately adrift between two warring factions, potentially with friends on either side. There is hope, however - those previously silent sirens are now blaring constantly, and it's very possible that their destruction could turn the tide against this needless bloodshed. The more of those you break, the looser the grip of this altered mindset will become, and the less hostile the automatons will be.
Keep in mind, however, that while you may feel unaffected, the possibility stands that you've been marked for one side without your knowledge. And though this may prove advantageous to getting through to those that identify you as their own, those that do not may take your attempts to shake their morale badly.

Even violently.

[Faust's kick luckily has not fractured anything and when Faust asks if he is okay, the young thief lets his guard down.] ........So you're not one of them. Phew! [i.e. Those idiots who keep attacking me. Who happen to be on the blue team.] I thought I was gonna get another headache here. Or at least I think.....? [Dude could be on one of those Nastrandir. There is a small possibility there.]

"No, I'm not a participant in this war memorial gone wrong - I'm still very much me, at least as far as I'm aware. But that's besides the point! Are you hurt? Do you need me to get help? Would you like-?"

He suddenly stops about five feet away, giving the young man a once-over and realising they blocked the good doctor's attack far better than he expected. Relief washes over him, and he takes a moment to will his heart to stop trying to burst out of his chest like some sort of parasitic alien lifeform...which gives him enough time to realise something particular odd about this entire scenario:

"...why did you ambush me like that?"
atailoftwoworlds: (No I did not look at her boobies. Honest)

Whoaaaaah wait a sec! I didn't ambush you! I was just saw you and dropped down to check if you-

[Although now that he thinks of it, the way he dropped down might have kind of looked like an ambush.] .....Oh....I kind of see why you thought that. [And awkward grin.] My bad. So much goin' on right now. Kinda keeps you on edge. [No need to let the doctor know he's not on top form. Dude probably has other people to worry about who need more help.]

...considering those words for a moment, Faust suddenly replies with a tone unusual even for him - sharp and concise, a firm reminder of how dire the current situation is, to both young Zidane and himself.

"...fair enough. Please do be more careful in the future, though. Would you like me to escort you back to the mana pool? I'm working with another group of unaffected individuals like yourself to destroy the sirens, so we should have this entire disaster sorted within a couple of hours. Until then, I think you'd probably be safer back home than out here in the literal warzone."

He wants to crack a joke, or strike a silly pose, but there are functionally brainwashed former allies out here trying to kill anybody who approaches them, and he just can't find it in himself to create levity at the moment. Right now, it's his absolute priority to evacuate as many unaffected islanders as possible and patch up any of their accumulated injuries on the way.
atailoftwoworlds: (I can't lose)

[personal profile] atailoftwoworlds 2019-10-27 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hang on a sec....'safer back home'?

[Oh boy. Zidane has noticed that quite a few people here would talk to him as a kid. Not that it didn't necessarily happen at home as well but less so. It was mildly irritating but he would just let it slide. Maybe it's a different world or country cultures thing? And he's been treated as worse.

The fact that he's told to go back home as if he's a kid who needs protecting when he's a perfectly capable fighter though causes him to glower. Especially when there are other people in trouble. He doesn't have the time for this.]

Don't you think you're telling that to the wrong guy? [And he gets out one of his daggers, throwing it in the air before catching it to make a point.]

...ah. It appears he'll need to handle this situation with far more sensitivity. The good doctor fully understands the call to help others in need - it's why he chose to become a doctor to begin with - and, if nothing else, appreciates the young man's drive to sort this mess out.
However, with the way things are progressing at the moment...

"Ah, my apologies, young Zidane - I did not wish to insinuate you could not handle yourself. What I mean to say is that, barring further exceptional occurrences, this situation is firmly on the path to resolution. Your assistance, while most definitely welcome under more standard circumstances, would be far more suited to assisting the evacuees who are still injured or disorientated from today's events. I'd personally oversee those efforts myself, t'were I not already assigned scouting duty. Speaking of which-!"

Faust steps back and peers into the sky, trying to read the time from the current position of the fake star in the sky. And then he jumps back in horror - he's late! The good doctor immediately spins on his heel, practically leaping back over to the giant scalpel embedded in the dirt and clambering back up it like a hyperactive kitten. There's no more time to waste, he needs to-!

"-I'm afraid I'm running behind schedule! I need to keep an eye out for any more of these machines looking to ambush my teammates, lest we be caught with our pants down! Can I trust you to make your way back on your own, young Zidane?"
atailoftwoworlds: (Just......not taking you seriously.)

[Zidane raises an eyebrow. The chaos "is firmly on the path to resolution"? Not as far as he's seen.] Nice try but I've actually had a look around and we're not even close to stopping it. I'm gonna try and snap few people out of the brainwashing. Help if you want but if you try and stop me you'd be wasting your time.
