It's mid afternoon, one year and then some after he first arrived on the beaches of the island. The thirteenth month. Thirteen's been said to be an unlucky number. Certainly it's not doing him any favors.

As good and kind as everyone is... it's just not enough. Not every day. There's only one thing that ever will be, one thing which he always seems to be denied, one way or another. Granted, not much about his situation is new, when it comes down to it, but then neither are these deep black moods. There were no failures this year. No bridge. Nothing to try. Everything's perfectly fine until he can't fake it anymore, because everything is not fine.

He had four pleasant days with his family, after so long dreaming of them. Was that it? Is that all he'll ever have? And there's no reason for it, seeing as there's very little he can do someone else can't do better. Of course, if he hadn't been so stupid, he would have had many years with them before being drawn to this world, not only four days... stupid, stupid, stupid. He's always been stupid. It explodes outwards as anger first, for a few minutes, but that's hard to sustain for him. So...

He's just lying on the ground, in the leaves underneath a tree, no smile on his face and cracks spiderwebbing through all the bones of one hand. Don't punch trees if you have no padding on your hands, you won't like the results. He doesn't want to get up, he doesn't want to goof off, joke around, play games, none of that. There's... nothing. No point at all.

His slightly muddy shoulder--he's been lying in the leaves too long. The shirt was a goner anyway, torn where his merman spines ripped through it and inkstained from those damn papers a few months ago. About time for a change.

"No. What's silly... what's wrong is bothering you guys with it." Bitterness there, but don't worry. It's all directed at himself.

Yeah that shirt definitely looks uncomfortable now that it's in such a state. And beyond repair, probably. Zidane might suggest it later at a better time.

He shrugs at Héctor's comment. "Nah, you're not bothering me at all. I want my friend to be happy and I'm not gonna sit around and do nothing while he's hurting." Goes against his nature and all that.

"Kid, you can't keep everyone happy." he says, tiredly. "Can't put all of that on yourself. You've got to pick your battles or you'll burn yourself out before you're twenty."

In other words: give up, he's beyond repair, as much as his filthy shirt and pathetic excuse for pants are.

“Huh?” That entire sentence causes Zidane to raise an eyebrow. “When the hell did I say that?” Well, okay he wanted his friend to be happy but he meant ‘okay enough to function on the island and not suffer in silence’. But this wasn’t about himself. This was about his friend who had been worn out by everything that was going on and needed help. Even if Zidane could not help him directly.

“Look, if you don’t think I can help, is there anyone who can?” Someone else on the island he could go and get?

"Am I wrong?" He's raising a brow, in a detached way. It's true, it's decent advice, but he doesn't have the energy to take the matter much farther. He breathes out, in and out, moving that air around pointlessly.

"I don't think so. We're all in the same boat here."

“Huh? Uh….well…..” That put him on the spot, although not because he thinks he can make everyone happy. He's not that unrealistic. However, that doesn’t mean he can't do something to help them even if he’s not able to do much. Whatever. It doesn’t sit well with him to abandon someone.

But something makes him wonder if there is an element of truth to what his friend is saying. He could get worn out? Not from struggling to make every single person happy and failing to but Dagger’s words come into his mind. Some advice he still needs to properly put into practice himself, he admits.

However, remembering what she said gives him an idea.. “You’re right. One person can’t make everyone happy. And most of us aren't gonna be completely happy until we go home." Including him. "But, you know what? If we’re all in the same boat, people are gonna understand, even if they can't help much. They sure aren't gonna think you're a burden. Well, not those who aren't selfish goons."

"No, we don't have a lot of selfishness on the island." Good, good people, who all get along wonderfully and look after each other. Whatever force choose them to snatch up picked the exact right people, ones who wouldn't turn on each other in isolation.

"But I am a burden, whether you guys know it or not."

There's a gentle shake of the head. "Hey, that's pretty weird talk. What makes you say that?"

Of course the guy's not a burden. Sure, he can't do what some of the others can such as fight. But as far as Zidane knows, he's helped out when he can. Like helping explore that underwater city. Or working at the Denny.

"Look at what I'm doing. Sitting out here in the jungle, probably got half of you scrambling around trying to find me, I don't know. At the least, I'm distracting you from whatever you were up to."

Someone may have tried calling his stone, which is in his hammock, far away from where he's plonked his bone bum. He can't say.
