Where: The Storyteller's Temple, in addition to the library that's finally getting some much-needed attention

The library is finally getting some renovations! Between some new bookshelves (hope someone here is good at hauling) and a veritable cascade of all sorts of books and supplies, an awful lot needs to be transferred from the Temple to the heretofore unused library, and any help anyone has to offer is much appreciated!

But, of course, there's also so very much to go through for your own perusal. Just look at all this! Coloring books, puzzle books, stories of all sorts, comic books, fashion magazines, all sorts of survival texts...you name it.

This all needs to be put away and stored in those neat little waterproofing book protectors - shelves need to be moved, supplies need to be secured, and someone should probably take inventory. But also...there's a lot of fresh new reading material on an island that previously had none.

Isn't that worth looking over?

[Look, she doesn't need an excuse to spend time with Kravitz and if he wants to read with her instead of working-that's even better. And since there are plenty of pages she can't completely sound out, she leans back against his body and quickly flips chunks of them, until she's towards the end.

And then she splays her hand across the entire page-all of that, pretty much. Please. Read it. Read about this fish!!]

[Oh boy, this. This sure is happening right now. He places his clipboard to the side, tilting her forward so he can sit down and cross his legs and see what she's pointed out to him. It seems obvious in retrospect- she didn't have a normal upbringing, he knows this- and he's not sure why he didn't have this realization up until now. Maybe there just weren't enough books to make it happen.]

Alright, well... here, I'll follow along with my finger, okay? Listen to me as you see the words.

[And he will, dutifully going over the words slower than he would by default, keeping his diction crisp. This is at least one thing he's very good at- vocabulary.]

[Oh, she's listening. It's amazing what happens when the stories follow a linear path and she's able to understand what happens as this fish gives up all its scales. Incredible. Authors know what they're doing. Or something.

And she seems to be paying attention to the vocabulary, how he pronounces it, mumbling repetitions under her breath, though before he manages to get through this page, she reaches forward to grasp a slightly bigger book. She didn't even look at the cover, honestly. It just seems More. It's probably not even a kid's book.]

[Yeah Ren it's almost like when you can read all the words you know the story. Incredible that words mean things. He thinks they're making real progress until she starts introducing something else into the mix and he knows he has to set down some kind of boundary or he's gonna be here all night.]

Ren, why not pick out another book you can read on your own at the start? Then you can try sounding out more words, so you know them. The more you practice, the better you'll be.

[There must be more picture books around here somewhere, he's sure...]

[Why learn to read when there's someone who can read for her, honestly. She knows Danger and Keep out and that's really all you need to know in this day and island age.

But a book with that many words is gonna be boring. Pictures are the spice of life and it's her solemn duty to find one, even if she has to get out of her uncle's cozy grip to do so.

She leans forward, stomach pressed against the ground and arms outstretched to nab the first one within reach. It's definitely a better choice.]

Okay, I'll read this one. It's about George and he's trying to be a cat because he's a good boy.

[That's not what it's about but she can read it so you know. Little victories.]

At least she picks something that won't keep him here all night. Kravitz lets her settle back in, flipping to the cover and then opening it.

He does voices, by the way. He absolutely does character voices. He's a big fucking nerd.]

Well, let's find out, shall we? We can start from the beginning.
