i'm looking for an easy thing [ OPEN MINGLE ]

Who: Anyone and everyone! Who wants to look at books?
What: BOOKVALANCHE
When: Let's say from the 25th and onward for simplicity
Where: The Storyteller's Temple, in addition to the library that's finally getting some much-needed attention
Warnings: Mark anything that comes up!

The library is finally getting some renovations! Between some new bookshelves (hope someone here is good at hauling) and a veritable cascade of all sorts of books and supplies, an awful lot needs to be transferred from the Temple to the heretofore unused library, and any help anyone has to offer is much appreciated!

But, of course, there's also so very much to go through for your own perusal. Just look at all this! Coloring books, puzzle books, stories of all sorts, comic books, fashion magazines, all sorts of survival texts...you name it.

This all needs to be put away and stored in those neat little waterproofing book protectors - shelves need to be moved, supplies need to be secured, and someone should probably take inventory. But also...there's a lot of fresh new reading material on an island that previously had none.

Isn't that worth looking over?

[Jester has done some help with the heavy lifting, here and there—she may have even been a helping hand for Tim earlier, though honestly, she probably would stand out in his memory more than he would in hers. She's sturdy, herself, and is even stronger than she looks, and she likes helping people as much as she likes making their lives harder.

It's a balance, and it's all for the Traveler. It makes perfect sense if you're one of his, you know?

So, while Tim is now doing a lot of stocking, Jester appears to now be "helping" by rearranging the books he's already placed on shelves in new, less organized locations. She crosses paths with him a few times as she works on making the library's stock as inscrutable as possible, and she's also flipped through a book that caught her eye every once in a while as she works.

Eventually, she strikes up conversation, in her strongly accented lilting voice.
]

Hey, Mr. Stocker Guy, do you know if like, any of the books here have, you know...

[And here she starts doing something odd with her eyebrows.]

...romance in them? You know, I have some books from home, but I can't keep reading the same two or three books over and over again, even if they are really really good, so you know, something like Tusk Love, or The Salty Sea, have you seen anything like that?

[...Apparently, she's switched to being a customer in the midst of masquerading as help.]
postictal: (that sounds like total bullshit my guy)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-03 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Girl with blue skin and horns and a weird accent. Not the strangest person he's run into, and he's gotten a lot better at not staring when he runs into something he doesn't recognize. And also at not asking, outright, something that might be considered rude.]

[He's...not entirely sure why she's asking him, except that by stocking these shelves with the unshakable sense of Purpose that he has, he's kind of inadvertently communicated that he's got some kind of position of authority here.]

[He doesn't.]

[Tim blinks at her once in consideration.]

...haven't seen any, but I didn't...I wasn't the one to make this request. I'm just helping move things over.

[He glances over at the shelves she's been..."helping" with, and frowns.]

What...ordering system are you using?
technicallytechnically: (off to a world we call our own)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-04 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Jester makes a very obvious "whoopsie" face as he seems to have noticed her, uh, peculiar method of organization now that she's brought attention on herself.

And, despite being a follower of a domain of trickery... she seems to be a little lacking in her ability to convincingly trick anyone, especially when put on the spot.
]

Oh, I just, you know...

[She glances at the book she just placed.]

I thought... if someone were interested in recipes, you know, while they're waiting for a... pot to boil, or something, they could also try out a coloring book? They're getting really popular with more than just kids these days. So someone could walk by this shelf and be like, oh hey, some very kind and caring individual made sure everything I needed was all in one place!
postictal: (facial equivalent of jazzhands)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-04 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Uh-huh.

[He'd be a little more inclined to be pissed off, if this were Denny, or the carpentry. But since it isn't, he just shrugs and goes back to slotting books back into place.]

How's that going in the way of finding your romance novels? [He hasn't particularly been paying that much attention to the titles other than the basics - putting children's books with games and puzzles and coloring books, and survival texts with that particular kind of literature, and so on. And, plainly, that was more or less a wasted effort.]
technicallytechnically: (living there well be free)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-04 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, he doesn't seem to care! That's not a typical reaction, and some part of Jester is a little disappointed because he also doesn't seem at all endeared by the prank. It's just... a non-reaction. So, yeah, Jester's relieved she doesn't have to run for the hills now, but... hm.

Clearly, she just needs a better prank for this guy. She'll stew on that for a bit.
]

Oh, super well! Because I get to see a lot of different types of books at once! See? It's better this way.

[She sagely nods. Yup. And then she moves to reach for another book from the pile that needs to be sorted, and gasps.]

Oh, does this sound like it could be one to you?? Tying the Knot! Maybe it's one of those ones, you know, that's like... kind of...

[She flips open the book before she can finish her thought, thank the Traveler, because she is immediately treated to a bunch of diagrams about tying knots.]

Oh. Maybe not.
postictal: (im going to punch you in the taint)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-04 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
[There's a very brief moment in which Tim suspects that it is exactly the kind of book she's hoping it'll be, and he closes his eyes in preparation for...whatever comes next. He's heard a pair of kids reading fanfiction about Sans aloud for all to hear, and even he doesn't want this.]

[Thank fuck this isn't the case.]

I think most of this stuff is...for helping us survive. Instructions about how to do basic stuff you'd need to live on an island like this one.
technicallytechnically: (and you dont have to keep it quiet)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-04 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
People need love to survive too!

[She looks genuinely huffy about... not getting her smut fiction.

But then she slips the knot how-to book into her bright pink haversack anyway. No reason. Really.
]

Besides, there is actually a lot of education in some romance books. They have a lot of history sometimes, and um... chemistry... if you don't know how to read then they can teach you that... geography... anatomy...
postictal: (tim pretends he doesn't give any shits)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-04 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people do.

[Tim's pretty sure he's not one of those people. At least - not in that regard.]

Yeah, so there's a lot of kids here I'm not sure need to be reading that stuff anyway. [He'd suggest she put all that shit on the top shelves, but...he feels like if he were to suggest it, she'd do the exact opposite, so, no, he's not going to say that at all.]
technicallytechnically: (high in the sky)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-04 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jester rolls her eyes because Someone wasn't brought up with the concept of avoiding the topic of sex around children. She grew up in a very high-class brothel with an agoraphobic mother who also happened to be a world-famous sex worker, alright.]

That doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. I probably wouldn't put it in the kid's section.

If that bunny person even gave us any.
postictal: (top 5 gayest hardcore breakdowns)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-04 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You put coloring books in the cooking section. I'm not going to base anything off of whatever your organization system is.

[Whether that was on purpose or not, it doesn't inspire confidence. All right.]

You'd have to look around more, then. I didn't make this request, so I don't know what was included. Or what people were asking for. You know you could always ask the Storyteller yourself.
technicallytechnically: (to the great unknown)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-04 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I could... But I don't know if that'd be good, you know?

[Which is the only warning Tim gets before Jester goes into Overshare Mode.]

'Cause my guy is the Traveler, and I don't know if he's like, friends with the Storyteller, or if they know each other at all, or if he'll get really jealous, and I think he's already kinda mad at me? I think the Storyteller might be giving him gossip that might not be true?? And I guess the Storyteller would like books since that's their name and all, but I don't know if I became friends with them, if the Traveler would be like, hey, I thought I was your friend, what gives Jester.
postictal: (look at all this bullshit)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-04 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's...telling stories so you get stuff. I don't - is religion a monogamy?

[He was never religious. He knows of religion, sure - you can't grow up in Alabama without a heavy dose of that good old Christian indoctrination going on in the background, on billboards, on television, buzzing in his ears whenever he tries to take his mind off it.]

[But the very literal and verifiable representation of gods? That's new.]

I'm pretty sure your...Traveler isn't here, anyway. If he's a god. Is he?
technicallytechnically: (oh if only their eyes could see)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-04 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[AMAZING HOW ONE CLUELESS PERSON CAN INSTANTLY SAY THE ONE SENTENCE SHE MOST FEARS WITHIN MINUTES OF MEETING HER. Overshare Hour has: backfired.

Jester's response is... a bout of giggles. If it weren't for her expression, they'd sound perfectly genuine.
]

Oh, don't be dumb, of course he's here. He's the Traveler. He's been everywhere! Too many places to tell me about! He can go wherever he wants!
postictal: (i'll punch a baby i don't give a fuck)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-04 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, get used to that not being the case.

[He slides another book onto a designated place on a corresponding shelf, and shrugs tiredly.]

If he was, I'm guessing you wouldn't be stuck here. Plenty of things that should be possible shouldn't, and the other way around. [Hopefully some measure of his...resigned calm will feed into what he's pretty sure is nascent panic.]
technicallytechnically: (anything you want to do it)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[Maybe that logic would've worked on Jester had she not, at one point, felt completely abandoned by the Traveler when she was kidnapped by slavers and kept confined and tortured. He can be anywhere he wants. That just doesn't always include... intervening the way she maybe expects.

But she was released eventually. And she met with him again. And she'd forgiven him.

But the thing about gods being very much real, also means eventually learning they're very much fallible.
]

Well, maybe he doesn't feel like sending me back home, or maybe he can't because of the Storyteller—you don't know anything about him. Maybe he doesn't even know I'm here yet! I bet I just need to keep doing things and then eventually he'll notice!
postictal: (u like eating so much??? eat shit)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Uh-huh.

[Said with a tone that clearly implies he thinks she should probably give up now and save herself the headache, buuuuut...]

Well, you can...keep telling yourself that, if you want. I'm not gonna stop you. [He's not going to convince her, either. That's way more trouble than it's worth, especially since he doesn't know her.]

You gotta name?
technicallytechnically: (simply look around and view it)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-07 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, maybe she will. But the moment he asks her name, she seems content to set aside any talk of whether or not the Traveler is still with her. In fact, her mood picks up noticeably as she brightly steps closer to thrust her hand in offer of handshake.]

Oh! Hi, I'm Jester!
postictal: (i'll punch a baby i don't give a fuck)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Not for nothing, Jester, but he's going to check your hand to make sure there aren't any whoopee cushions or joy buzzers in there before shaking it. He's had his dealings with a wisecracking skeleton, and that was enough for him to learn what to expect from certain archetypes.]

Tim.

[Jester. He'd go so far to say that the name suits her.]
technicallytechnically: (living there well be free)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-11 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Thanks, she picked it herself.

And listen, if whoopee cushions or joy buzzers were a more common thing in her world, you wouldn't be unwise to check. But also, Jester is offended at the notion. She's perfectly innocent. She's never once covered her hand in honey before a handshake.
]

Tim! Hey, what's that thing behind you??
postictal: (behind you)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-11 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[That catches him the way nothing else in this conversation has - though maybe not in the way Jester would expect. He goes still for half a minute, his breath catching in his throat, and an old feeling stirs at the corners of his eyes. Don't turn around.]

[So he doesn't turn around. He just freezes.]

[It's a veritable battle to keep his voice steady when he answers.]

What do you mean.
technicallytechnically: (is your cup half full or empty)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-14 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, the freezing is... unexpected. He suddenly looks deathly serious. She didn't mean to scare him.

So she tries to do damage control. Her hands come up and she gestures frantically that no, it's okay, everything's fine.
]

Oh, I mean, it's nothing dangerous, it's just something really cool, like uhh, I think it's a... really funny bird?? Its feathers are doing something soooo crazy, you've got to see how crazy this bird is.

[She's practically forgotten what the hell she was even going to do while his back was turned, now, so we're really flying by the seat of our pants here.]
postictal: (how many stinkeyes can tim have)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
...right.

[God, why'd his shoulders get so tense? When did they get so tense? His back is too stiff, his fists curled at his sides, and...]

[Breathe.]

[He breathes. Slow, easy, simple. It doesn't make any of it go away, but the knee-jerk klaxons no longer thrum away in his skull, and it's clearer now that she's just trying to recover something that he made weird. Quit making things weird, Tim. Jesus.]

A bird. In the library.
technicallytechnically: (and all that will come in between)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-04-15 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's part of why it's so crazy!! How did that guy get in here!! Man!! Wait, maybe they're one of those talking birds, like they're actually a person that got brought here and not just one of the local, uh, wildlife? That would explain a lot, 'cause this bird person looks really cool.

[He's not looking! She's hyping this up so much! What must she sacrifice to get one man to look over his shoulder!

Okay, obviously she's just not selling it enough.
]

HOLY SHIT, THE BIRD JUST STARTED POOPING ALL OVER THE BOOKS!!!

[Nailed it.]
postictal: (im Tired)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-15 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Tim's...still not looking. He's just staring at her, faintly bemused, his frown darkening increasingly the longer she goes on. The escalation would've been forced even if it weren't obviously a backpedal from earlier.]

[It's not really clear what she's trying here, so eventually Tim just...sighs.]

If you want me to stop talking to you, you can just say so.
technicallytechnically: (give me one good honest kiss)

[personal profile] technicallytechnically 2019-05-09 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Jester... immediately deflates. She didn't mean to hurt his feelings!!]

No! I like talking to you! You're super nice and you have, uh, good sideburns? I just wanted you to turn around so I could... put a dick on the shelf.

[Tonally, the way she admits it is absolutely not the way those actual words should ever be said. She offers no explanation for what she means by "put a dick on the shelf". But she apparently takes it very, very seriously, by how disheartened she is now.]
