i can't push this barrel any further [ CLOSED ]
Who: Tim, Mira, Muffet, and Ginko
What: Carpentry building Get
When: Backdated to 12/27 - 1/03
Where: Nuidan D2, F2 and E1, and D6/C6
Warnings: None, probably? Will warn if it comes up
[The rain-rich fields of the north make for good weather to run some maintenance on the fields, assuming that you don't mind a little moisture. The corn, wheat, and barley fields all need weeding, cleaning, and mending of their fences in an effort to restore them to something a little more manageable.]
[By contrast, the heat of the west may make the cotton fields more difficult to tend to. They require the same sort of cleaning and maintenance that the others do, with the notable difference that this is to be done in the summer heat instead of the cool of autumn.]
[All right, team. Let's go to work.]

North
This, though, he can handle. He's focusing on the fences for now, replacing pieces where necessary, carefully securing them together if they're too loose to do their job. He is also, as is often the case, mumbling half to himself and half to anyone nearby.] I'd wonder how it got to this point, but I guess that'll happen when the island is run by someone without thumbs.
no subject
You know, I'm not entirely certain that would slow them down very much. They seemed quite capable of finding their own ways of working around that.
[She doesn't seem at all shy about work, herself, keeping pace with Ginko as she works steadily. Her several nimble hands are often quite helpful for dealing with tangled messes that can't simply be cut apart, any complex work.]
no subject
[He gives a fence post a couple knocks, just to make sure it's solid, before moving on to check the next section.] I'll admit, it's not like I know a whole lot about keeping a place like this running long-term.
no subject
[Muffet nods, conceding the point, as she carefully ties off the bundle she's been working with.]
In theory, I could simply consider the work needed to maintain my garden and scale up, but in practice I suspect something this large contains far more complications than that.
no subject
--Just the variety of things being grown would complicate it, right? Having to keep track of care schedules for these fields, the orchards, animals...
no subject
I'd be shocked if it didn't. The way everything must interact... I keep having to herd my little flock out of poorly-chosen grazing areas, and they're far more docile than most of the local wildlife we've seen.
[She pauses, as a thought occurs.]
Though I wonder if an avatar can choose what sorts of creatures live on their island, and which ones don't? It seems like the sort of thing a god ought to have some say in, but there are rather a lot of things on Enso the Storyteller doesn't seem to have put there... Then again, I suppose they weren't precisely awake for quite some time.
[She's choosing not to blame them for the Fusterclucks. She'd like to still be friends with them.]
no subject
I imagine they must have some control... as long as they're conscious, anyway. [He's fully willing to agree on that assumption. It'd only make sense that they'd have some control, but... he can't imagine the Storyteller would intentionally put some of this crap on Enso.]
no subject
[At least if you have dust bunnies under the couch, they probably aren't devouring someone.]
[Admittedly, if the Storyteller didn't make them, it does raise the question of who did. She's not entirely sure she wants to consider the idea of the Fusterclucks just evolving unassisted, either.]
[All of the possibilities are very disturbing.]
no subject
And, uh... he's having a similar thought, honestly.] ...How long were they out of commission, again? That seems like it would effect how the animals... got there.
no subject
[Honestly, she's a little concerned. Coming from such different backgrounds, it's a little hard to tell whether or not the Storyteller is okay. But she gets the feeling that a four-thousand year long depression nap probably points to 'no'.]
no subject
[Like, listen, his understanding of evolution is a little bit limited
seeing as how he was living in the late 1800s until recentlybut he’s pretty sure it’s not that fast.]Maybe they swam here. [Sort of a joke.]
no subject
Oh dear- I do hope they didn't manage to cause trouble for the Jormun on the way in...
[She's just picturing it and, yeah. That's a worrying mental image.]
no subject
[How would someone defend against that, honestly??]
no subject
[Or, possibly, a good sturdy stone building to shelter in- but she's not familiar enough with Jormun architecture to be sure.]
no subject
[Ah, there. He figures the post should be buried deep enough now, so he wiggles it a bit before starting to pack dirt back in.]
Wonder if it'd be rude to ask about that someday.
[Not that Ginko is exactly known for his manners, but... listen, when it comes to fishpeople whose ruler is fucking enormous, he figures being a little careful might be worth it.]
no subject
[Presumably if they've had trouble with them before, they'll mention it. They aren't exactly the kind of thing that's so easy to forget.]
no subject
Guess that's going to be something to bring up sometime - or, the latter is, obviously.
no subject
West
[For now, he spends most of his time tearing weeds out from the earth and clearing debris from around the places where the fence posts have been rooted into the ground. A few more days in, and he'll start patching the holes in the fence as well.]
Re: West
It's fine. She has her hair pulled back, and thank god for Clothing Mountain providing appropriate wear. She can handle the heat. It's fine.
She starts on the weeds where he hasn't, and after a while... she looks over. ]
Are you doing alright?
no subject
[He blinks sweat from his eyes, breaks to scrub some of it away with the back of his hand and squint at her.]
...are you?
no subject
[ While that's true, it's still hard work. She's going to need to take a long shower after this, but-- ]
And if it helps everyone else, then a little discomfort is worth it.
no subject
[She must not be used to the same kind of heat conditions that he is - which is fair. He wouldn't want anyone to be accustomed to Alabama weather, because that would mean being accustomed to Alabama, which is a fate he would wish on no one.]
no subject
[ Thank goodness for that. She's still pretty overheated, but she's at least not going to pass out. Probably. ]
Do you need any, too?
no subject
[Sol wasn't nearly this bad.]
no subject
no subject
[He shakes his head, one side of his mouth twisting ruefully.]
You lucked out. Weather-wise, and location-wise.
no subject
I guess so. There were some things that weren't too great... but at least the weather didn't cause heatstroke.
no subject
[He's suddenly wondering if he should've brought Muffet along for this part, seeing as Ginko doesn't seem fond of the heat - and neither, as it happens, does Mira?]
no subject
[ She sounds about halfway sure. ]
I don't want to leave you to do all of this yourself, though.
no subject
[He gestures at his knapsack, set a little ways off. Thus far, the heat has prevented him from having to chase away any curious scavengers, at least.]
Brought food if you need it.
no subject
[ --ah, food. She'd been more concerned about water. ]
Really? What did you bring?
no subject
[Jerky is high in protein and fat, which makes it ideal for someone who tries, whenever possible, to stick to a ketogenic diet.]
no subject
[ It'd be pretty rude if she complained--not that she wants to, at all. ]
Thank you. I appreciate it, especially with working so hard.
no subject
[Coffee and cigarettes - survival packaged into two handily sized addictions. When things got at their worst, he'd pass more than a few days like that, trying to stretch out a pack of cigarettes so he wouldn't have to think about the gnawing pit in his stomach.]
no subject
[ She pushes the hair out of her face, wishing very much that she had a hairband or headband or something. ]
So... have you done a lot of this kind of work before?
no subject
Little bit. Not like I did this for a living or anything, but sometimes you gotta pick up odd jobs to make rent. So you don't drown in student loans.
[When you've got a medical record like his, making you a long-term liability, not many people want to hire you for anything besides one-offs.]
no subject
If only the loans could pay themselves... At least we don't have to worry about those here.
no subject
[Is he joking? Probably not. He prefers just being able to do shit for people and not needing to worry about who owes who what.]
no subject
[ For her part, she really does believe she's lucked out. The islands are miles better than her world; she can't even call the place a home. Here, though, she thinks she can. It's definitely crossed her mind several times. ]
At least there's no shortage of excitement.
no subject
[This kind of life-or-death "excitement," that's more tolerable than the kind he's most accustomed to, so he'll take it. Hell, he took a war between light and dark over his life at home.]
no subject
I didn't have to worry about surviving back there. I did some camping before, but... nothing like this.
I'm not complaining, though. Having a lot of people who like you helps.
no subject
[Not for nothing, but it's...uh, he can relate, is the thing. And it's not necessarily something he'd wish on anyone else.]
no subject
It's... the way my world works. That's all. It's nothing I could change back there, so there's really no use in dwelling on it.
no subject
[That sounds like a people thing. But hey, it's not like he knows the context.]
no subject
[ She pulls a few more weeds. ]
But it's better here, so it's okay.
no subject
[He's not about to press. That's not what he does - especially now.]
Some places are better than where you came from.
