January Intro: It Grips Me
INTRO LOG: JANUARY
Who: New arrivals, and you!
What: New souls arrive to the archipelago of LifeAftr
When: January 5th and onward
Where: All over Ensō
Warnings: Mark as needed!
Shores of Ensō: The Sun's a Harsh Reminder Why
As dawn arrives - and with it, new adventurers to Ensō's shores. It appears the Storyteller is not about to allow a repeat of last month. The ever watchful pages that have guarded the shorelines the month prior now begin to move closer inland, circling the landscape in closing, careful arcs. To the particularly astute, their purpose may quickly become clear. Anything foreign to Ensō's natural ecosystem will be met initially with wary hovering, ruffled pages flocking to nearby trees and wheeling overhead. Now and again, a particularly brave little page will swoop down to tap against the top of an unsuspecting entity.
Foreign entities, in this instance, just so happen to include...well, all of you. These partially sentient notes can be found flitting across the entirety of Ensō and the neighboring housing islets, intent on surveying every little nook and cranny of the tropical landscape. While they may little more than a vague irritant, their attitude towards a person they’re surveying can absolutely get worse, depending on the response they receive.
Though responses may vary (and creativity, encouraged), the pages are looking for indications of anything that is not only out of the ordinary, but also that which is acting suspicious. Unfortunately, they're not quite experienced in determining what does and does not count as a genuine threat, and thus they might very well interpret even the smallest signs of surprise, anxiety, and (justified) irritation as signs of hostility.
Unfortunately, their response to this is likely to be just as unpleasant as it is abrupt. Those of you who protest a little too vigorously may find yourselves abruptly doused with a viscous black ink - a marker to return and inspect you again in future. Where more aggressive behavior is…noted, you may very well find yourself swept up in a tornado of angry paperwork, only to be abruptly (and not at all comfortably) deposited at the Storyteller's temple. A very weary Storyteller will do their best to apologize as they slowly smooth out the kinks in this new security system.
But surely you agree, dear adventurer, that this sort of security system is indeed necessary.
Ensō, Inland: Who Knows Where Our Limits Lie
Unsuspecting adventurers aren't the only creatures the pages seem intent on harassing, it seems. Across Ensō, the activity of the native fauna will become much more apparent as creatures are driven from their usual haunts by invading paper. From the smallest of snaplings to herds of cariborn, it will take some time for the wildlife to settle down as many disturbed creatures will find themselves displaced miles away from their natural homes, seemingly at random. Unfortunately, this also includes the creatures most would prefer not to have on the move.
For the unappraised, Ensō happens to play host to a particularly horrifying brand of wildlife known only as the fustercluck: a large swath of appropriated limbs with katamari-like qualities, if katamaris were more well known for digesting the majority of their victims and using what little remained (usually the hands and feet) to propel themselves towards their next meal.
Despite Ensō being home to two such creatures, very little has been discovered about them, aside from how unfortunately indestructible they seem to be. Magic, guns, bombs - name your poison, and a fustercluck will most certainly be impervious to it, including poison itself. Should you be unlucky enough to wander into the path of a fustercluck, your best option is to run - or lend the fustercluck a hand.
And another hand. And your entire body, since you offered so nicely.
The fusterclucks have a more directed path than most creatures - they can be found moving up and down the rows of G and H until January 10th, when they appear to settle down...unless they're diverted elsewhere first.
All new arrivals will awake with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!
As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.
Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

She blinks, and puts the creature to the description she'd been given a week or two ago.]
That... would be a fustercluck, if what I'm told is correct. [She gently tugs on her father's arm in a returned warning of her own; doesn't even bother with grabbing her bayard. She knows there's no chance in fighting it without being caught along with whatever else it's collected on its warpath.] We can't fight it. The creature will devour anything and anyone in its wake and add their limbs to its collection.
no subject
It's horrific.
[He's been trying to wrap his mind around what it even is, but well. That information has a frown creasing his brow and he looks from Allura, back in the direction of the monstrosity.]
So it's allowed to roam unchecked, despite that level of danger?
no subject
It is.
[There's no denying that fact. Along with the fact that she knows her father had his Moments when he was younger and she's kept those stories from her team, though Coran may have mentioned one or two of them by now. ...For most of them. Allura's eyes narrow slightly. She knows how it sounds, and she hates it as well.]
There are two, and apparently they had remained in their own corners of the island for some time. [Until today. That's two for two of "things hit the fan when new people arrive" for her.] According to Keith, they haven't been able to find a way to stop them without dying.
...Father, do you know how much your magic has been limited here? My alchemy has been limited mostly to healing capabilities.
no subject
For now.]
I haven't had much need to find out, just yet. Should I expect it to be limited as well?
[And taking a small step back here, he holds up a hand.] Your alchemy?
[Little girl of his, what have you been up to these lost decaphoebs? He wants to know everything.]
no subject
Oh, no.]
Yes. And anything remotely magical in nature has to be recharged at a manapool regularly or it stops working. ...Found that out the hard way my first night here.
[Allura smiles a little.] I've been to Oriande, Father.
[The rest can wait until a certain someone is not sizing up the fustercluck like he's gonna offer it just a little stab.]
no subject
And he's right on that edge. The fustercluck monstrosity is dangerous, and the idea of it roaming free unsettling. Just a tiny stab, Allura. Exploratory stabbing committee.
But he is distracted by that information. Then he needs to find out how his alchemy has been affected before he finds himself in a spot where he needs to use it and can't. AND far more importantly.]
You've faced the Guardian. [And clearly passed the tests. Sorry, yeah, he's going to forget about the fustercluck for a moment to look just plain proud, expression melting into a smile.]
no subject
What has her life become. Blue, wherever you are, help.
Police. Murder. She takes another step away from the fustercluck, keeping it in her periphery for obvious reasons.]
I have, and I passed the tests. [There is a small amount of pride in her voice, though it doesn't quite meet her eyes.] What I learned there saved our lives several times. ...Thanks to Lotor.
no subject
His smile softens, dims faintly as she continues. Lotor. She's used the name before, and there's no mistaking it even by the way that she speaks.]
I'm proud of you. The challenges of Oriande are not easily passed.
[At all. But he does add, smile twisting ever so slightly.] Of course, you are my daughter, so I would never have had a shred of doubt you'd manage it.
[So. Now he's thinking he probably ought to figure out the extent of what their alchemy can do here. So he can use it in conjunction with stabbing.]
no subject
But, her smile does become far more honest at the praise. Almost as though a small amount of the weight she's carried is lifted off her shoulders. Yes, that is so like him from when they both were younger.
She will worry when they're all under the same roof once she makes sure he doesn't die attempting to stab the fustercluck. Allura looks down at the green bracer just poking out from under her armor, then at him once more. Yep. That sure is a few feathers of emerald green beneath her pink paladin armor. She didn't choose it, okay. Shh.]
"Like father like daughter," as some of my friends would say. [She'll tease right back, though the connotations are rather strong there.]
When you are ready to test those limits, I'm willing to help you. I had to discover it the hard way against creatures made of rot and shadow.
no subject
Besides, he's distracted. It's another of those moments where he finds himself startled by the woman that she's become, how much she's accomplished. He exhales a laugh, nodding.]
Though for your sake, I hope not too alike. [He knows himself. And he thinks Allura is likely brighter.
His expression sobers though, growing serious and he nods.] I would like to find the edge of what I can do here before I find myself reaching for something beyond what I'm able when I'm in need of it.
I...live.... /falls over
She laughs quietly. Yes, she really has changed so much since she was a small child.]
I suppose we'll see. [Remind her sometime to tell stories of her own missteps before the others do.
She nods back.] Then let us retreat for now and come back to this creature another time. I... [She bites the inside of her bottom lip.] As much as I wish to stop it, too... I don't want to lose you, Father.
<3!
He ducks his head with a smile.]
I certainly don't intend to be lost. But you're right. For now, we can retreat. Until there's some better approach.
[He'll behave, for now. For Allura's sake.]
