October Intro: I Think We Should Run

INTRO LOG: OCTOBER
Who: New arrivals, and you!
What: New souls arrive to the archipelago of LifeAftr
When: October 4th and onward
Where: Primarily Nuidan, though Ensō is also likely
Warnings: Mark as needed!

Nuidan: Checking that the Coast is Clear
This time around, newest arrivals to the archipelago of LifeAftr will open their eyes to the skies overlooking the relatively recent island of Nuidan. Namely, they'll be waking in the northern quadrant of said island, the region perpetually locked in the season of spring. This means rich fields of gold and green and buff-colored grass and skies swollen with unshed rainclouds. The scent of turned soil and petrichor mingles with the faint, earthy scent of manure.

It's not an unpleasant way to wake. There are doubtless worse places to rouse yourself. But the cloud of dust clotting up the horizon soon suggests that there might be a bit more to the circumstances of your arrival than some nice weather.

And, unfortunately, that's exactly the case. There's a herd of something charging directly for you, and nothing short of a natural disaster is going to sway them from their course.
A thick-packed herd of scaly aptonoth have been spooked, startled, or otherwise galvanized into a panicked stampede across the northern reaches of Nuidan.

Quadrupedal, herbivorous, and scaly, aptonoths resemble dinosaurs in appearance more than they do so in their generally placid nature. They are far more akin to cows in temperament, even if their skin is a good deal more leathery. Even the broad spikes at the ends of their tail or the heavy horns atop their heads aren't terribly dangerous unless the entire herd feels threatened. While aptonoths are typically easily tamed, in this case they are far from amenable to conceding to anyone's interference.

It's probably best to try and get out of their way. Fast.

Ensō: 'Cause They're Already Ghosts
Things are quieter on LifeAftr's mainland. They might seem a little...eerily so, in fact. Today officially marks the day that the Storyteller makes their departure, and seeks out new islands for you intrepid explorers to uncover. The difference that their absence creates is small, at first, and most prominently felt on Ensō itself.

The temple is the most obvious thing. It simply looks...defeated and empty, as hollow and unoccupied as it currently is. That aura of proud mystery is absent, though the Chamber of Glyphs at least remains as it was. But anyone who comes looking for the Storyteller themself at this time will find no one waiting for them. No flower-touched animal, no old, dusty tome. You're currently on your own.

Or...maybe not? The Storyteller was courteous enough to issue a warning last month about the nature of the dream-island of Mu. The effects of that island will start to make themselves evident in small, simple ways: namely, in the way you're going to start seeing things.

Nothing serious, of course. Just...flickers of movement in the corners of your vision. Something about your surroundings just being so slightly off. The color of that rock - it's always been that way, hasn't it? Or was it only always that way five minutes ago? While these blips and hitches in reality are decidedly non-specific, they can be unsettling for those who can't adjust for a bit of strangeness.

The source of these odd quirks in the fabric of reality is easily explained by the presence of clockroaches, one of Mu's wily dream-creatures. You'd be hard-pressed to catch a glimpse of any of them directly; they specialize in the ethereal and the ephemeral, and seldom reveal themselves to anyone if they can help it. But you might, if you're very attentive or very lucky, see some indistinct, silver-misted blur disappearing behind the trunk of a tree in a blink-swift ghost of motion.

But they are, in essence, harmless. At least...for the moment.

As of October 4th, the Storyteller will be unavailable for both IC Contact threads and Item Requests. If you need anything vital backdated, just let us know!

All new arrivals will awake with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!

As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.

Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

They were on the other island, though?

[Do you really think we need to? Hero sounds, at the least, open to the possibility.]
catpiper: (your brows will cut a man in half)

Those scary things-

[They're on the other island, yeah, for now. She hasn't seen them in person, but now she feels like there's a real possibility the dinosaurs might be the things flickering in the corners of her eyes.

Just waiting to stampede them. Horrible.
]

They could be here too.

[Well...Hero got here from the other island herself. So they could.]

Okay. We could go up a tree! Then we could see if they were coming, and if they were, they couldn't get us!
catpiper: (bribe a gnome for their bones)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-10-13 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
[That's genius. She holds some reservations about a tiny kid going up into a tall tree, but she'll be there to keep this young girl from falling. It'll be fine.]

Okay, we can find a good tree to hide in and-

[A pause, as she turns to look around.]

If we find one with a lot of leaves, that'll hide us better.

[Hero's good at climbing trees! It's fine!]

Yeah...

[She turns a circle as well. The trees here aren't exactly like the ones from home, but they also aren't like the ones from before, so they should be safe and normal. She points at one that, while probably not the leafiest around, has both a fair amount of leaves and some branches low enough to climb up onto easy.]

How about that one?
catpiper: (what is tequatl)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-10-18 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Okay.

[It works-leafy and branchy. Two important tree qualities and this one doesn't seem to be doing the weird thing the other ones are. The few she thought were safe feel less so the more she thinks about it, for whatever weird, unexplainable reason ]

I can help you up since you're small and then I'll climb up after. Don't go really high.

[personal profile] ofsterlingstuff 2018-10-19 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hero nods.]

I'm good at climbing! Just help me up to the first branch and I can do the rest.

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-10-23 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[Good, she'll be watching regardless though and if Hero lets her, she's going to lean down to pick up this small child and hold her up as far as she can.

GRAB THE BRANCH.
]
ofsterlingstuff: (Plot)

[personal profile] ofsterlingstuff 2018-10-24 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Grabbing that branch! Hero hauls herself up, flinging one leg over and scrabbling upright so that she can go for the next branch.]

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-10-25 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay, well, this is new-this nervewracking feeling that starts to ebb its way into her mind as she watches the tiny child go up branch two. That had been the plan, climb the tree, but Ren can't help to cautiously watch the child's steps as she trails behind, moving much slower than her companion.]
ofsterlingstuff: (Transition)

[personal profile] ofsterlingstuff 2018-10-27 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, Hero's not being particularly cautious at all, so she'll be making her way up pretty quickly once she's got the rhythm of it down. She won't go too far from Ren, though, eventually turning to straddle a branch.]

We don't need to go all the way up, I think.
catpiper: (this is our villain origin story)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-11-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[See? This is the kind of stuff that never stressed Ren out before, but it's sure happening right now. Tiny child ambling up the trees without a care in the world-this is too much and the relief is all too obvious on her face when her small companion decides to not climb the whole way.

She gets herself situated in her little perch below Hero.
]

We'll stay right here until it's dark. Dinosaurs sleep at night. I think that's how it works.

[Most things do, anyway.]
ofsterlingstuff: (hero39)

[personal profile] ofsterlingstuff 2018-11-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense.

[She's not so sure - but they were definitely awake during the day, so it makes sense, right?]

How long is that gonna be?
catpiper: (pic#12601924)

[personal profile] catpiper 2018-11-12 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
[If there's one valuable skill she's learned from wandering around alone, it's how to vaguely tell when it's about to get dark. The sun is over there and they're here and that's like dope and stuff.]

A long time, but we'll be okay. We can play a game.
