October Intro: I Think We Should Run

INTRO LOG: OCTOBER
Who: New arrivals, and you!
What: New souls arrive to the archipelago of LifeAftr
When: October 4th and onward
Where: Primarily Nuidan, though Ensō is also likely
Warnings: Mark as needed!

Nuidan: Checking that the Coast is Clear
This time around, newest arrivals to the archipelago of LifeAftr will open their eyes to the skies overlooking the relatively recent island of Nuidan. Namely, they'll be waking in the northern quadrant of said island, the region perpetually locked in the season of spring. This means rich fields of gold and green and buff-colored grass and skies swollen with unshed rainclouds. The scent of turned soil and petrichor mingles with the faint, earthy scent of manure.

It's not an unpleasant way to wake. There are doubtless worse places to rouse yourself. But the cloud of dust clotting up the horizon soon suggests that there might be a bit more to the circumstances of your arrival than some nice weather.

And, unfortunately, that's exactly the case. There's a herd of something charging directly for you, and nothing short of a natural disaster is going to sway them from their course.
A thick-packed herd of scaly aptonoth have been spooked, startled, or otherwise galvanized into a panicked stampede across the northern reaches of Nuidan.

Quadrupedal, herbivorous, and scaly, aptonoths resemble dinosaurs in appearance more than they do so in their generally placid nature. They are far more akin to cows in temperament, even if their skin is a good deal more leathery. Even the broad spikes at the ends of their tail or the heavy horns atop their heads aren't terribly dangerous unless the entire herd feels threatened. While aptonoths are typically easily tamed, in this case they are far from amenable to conceding to anyone's interference.

It's probably best to try and get out of their way. Fast.

Ensō: 'Cause They're Already Ghosts
Things are quieter on LifeAftr's mainland. They might seem a little...eerily so, in fact. Today officially marks the day that the Storyteller makes their departure, and seeks out new islands for you intrepid explorers to uncover. The difference that their absence creates is small, at first, and most prominently felt on Ensō itself.

The temple is the most obvious thing. It simply looks...defeated and empty, as hollow and unoccupied as it currently is. That aura of proud mystery is absent, though the Chamber of Glyphs at least remains as it was. But anyone who comes looking for the Storyteller themself at this time will find no one waiting for them. No flower-touched animal, no old, dusty tome. You're currently on your own.

Or...maybe not? The Storyteller was courteous enough to issue a warning last month about the nature of the dream-island of Mu. The effects of that island will start to make themselves evident in small, simple ways: namely, in the way you're going to start seeing things.

Nothing serious, of course. Just...flickers of movement in the corners of your vision. Something about your surroundings just being so slightly off. The color of that rock - it's always been that way, hasn't it? Or was it only always that way five minutes ago? While these blips and hitches in reality are decidedly non-specific, they can be unsettling for those who can't adjust for a bit of strangeness.

The source of these odd quirks in the fabric of reality is easily explained by the presence of clockroaches, one of Mu's wily dream-creatures. You'd be hard-pressed to catch a glimpse of any of them directly; they specialize in the ethereal and the ephemeral, and seldom reveal themselves to anyone if they can help it. But you might, if you're very attentive or very lucky, see some indistinct, silver-misted blur disappearing behind the trunk of a tree in a blink-swift ghost of motion.

But they are, in essence, harmless. At least...for the moment.

As of October 4th, the Storyteller will be unavailable for both IC Contact threads and Item Requests. If you need anything vital backdated, just let us know!

All new arrivals will awake with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!

As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.

Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

[ Yeah, thanks. That's very helpful?!

Still, it means it's a place with time, which - again - the afterlife shouldn't really have. That, and things like pain, exhaustion and hunger. It's just getting more and more confusing for Molly. ]

Are there places to rest?
hyperlit: (i am going into battle and i want)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-10-06 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
yes

[What are those places, you might ask? Don't...ask them, actually. The Drifter is a nomad by nature; their idea of a place to rest is pretty much anywhere that isn't immediately overflowing with enemies.]

homes
temple
safe from things

Homes sounds like a good idea.

[ He doesn't know who the temple is for, and he's not about to have a faith crisis in the middle of all this other bullshit. ]

Would you mind pointing the way?

[You're in luck, Molly! This is the one thing the Drifter can do. They nod, draw up a secondary HUD from their sprite, and it turns out to be a full island map. It certainly took them time to get to the point where they could map it in its entirety, but fortunately for everyone, the general understanding of Ensō has been complete for some time now.]

[They indicate a cluster of islets just off the mainland's coast.]

I... huh.

[ That's not quite what Molly meant, but that's really handy. ]

How do I get there? Swim?
hyperlit: (i am going into battle and i want)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-10-09 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ah, right. The Drifter brings one hand - gloved, the fingers slightly tipped in a way that suggests claws - up to point at their temple.]

dreamed of storyteller?
devilstongue: (🔮 13)

[personal profile] devilstongue 2018-10-11 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...I did, yeah.

[ A weird, strange dream, but a dream nonetheless. ]
hyperlit: (i dont know how to fucking please you)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-10-11 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
it was real
and all they said

[About the mana pools, about the nature of the world...all of that was real, just the same. Just because it is a dream does not mean it was not real, of course.]
devilstongue: (🔮 4)

[personal profile] devilstongue 2018-10-11 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So... you really portal through these mana pools by putting flowers in?

[ It sounds insane, yet it's somehow not the weirdest thing he's ever heard. ]

Alright, I'm into it. Let's go somewhere less messed up.
hyperlit: +sprite (MY STRONGEST POTIONS)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-10-11 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Drifter nods, yes. And...that sounds like he wants them to show him how the pools work in real time, so the Drifter decides that's good enough in terms of instruction. They start moving in the direction of the nearest mana pool without so much as a warning.]

[Better keep up!]
devilstongue: (🔮 67)

[personal profile] devilstongue 2018-10-11 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ At least Mollymauk is an agile person and doesn't have too much problem following this strange person, not even with the flowing coat and jewelry. He doesn't even know what 'mana' is, but so far he's gathered that there's a pool of it that acts like a portal.

Curiouser and curiouser.

If everything in that dream was true as well, this was going to be a mess. ]

hyperlit: (can do anything that you can)

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-10-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
[It doesn't take long to reach one. The Drifter plucks one of the flowers that grow in abundance beside the stone plinth aglow with greenish liquid, holding it up.]

think of islets

[There are two mana pools on the islets, but they doubt it matters, very much, which one they end up on.]
devilstongue: (🔮 61)

[personal profile] devilstongue 2018-10-12 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what?

[ What is an islet? Small baby islands? He could try thinking of that, Molly guesses. Hopefully he didn't end up completely lost. ]

islets

[Does he...not know what islets are? The Drifter blinks once to process that, then once again opens their sprite's map HUD to point at the speckles of the islets off the mainland's coast.]

these

[ He's never even seen the sea, he's new to a lot of things.

Looking at the 'map', Molly has to focus a bit before he gives a slightly hesitant nod. Okay, he could give it a try.

What's the worst that could happen when you're already dead? ]

Okay, got it.

[personal profile] hyperlit 2018-10-15 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[That's the spirit! :D]

[The Drifter, content with this, drops the flower into the mana pool to demonstrate, concentrating on the islets, and promptly vanishes. If Molly follows, he has a 50% chance of ending up at the mana pool as they - the islets, after all, have two of them.l
devilstongue: (🔮 61)

d20s hate me apparently

[personal profile] devilstongue 2018-10-15 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Here goes nothing...

[ Molly steps into the pool after grabbing and tossing in his own flower. Thinking of the weird map he had seen, he closes his eyes.

When he opens them again, he's somewhere else, in another pool. Alone. ]

Great.
