I suspect that confirms that we're from different worlds, then- our return to the Surface was quite an event, I would expect anyone from after that time period to be aware of it.

[Unless humanity wiped them out again and had managed to completely suppress their memory and destroy the evidence by the time they advanced to the technology level CT's time period showed. But she doesn't bring that up, on the grounds that it's a bit depressing. No sense getting stuck on unpleasant hypotheticals.]

Oh? May I ask what your home was like, then?

Yeah, there...definitely wasn't anything like that in the history books.

[ She'd pretty sure she'd remember learning about "the return of the giant underground spider people." Or at least a horror movie or two based on the event. ]

Um...well, I grew up on ships, mostly. I don't... [ She shakes her head. ] I don't know if I'd call any of them home.

Ships in the ocean, or...?

[She has a sudden, vivid memory of Shepard's dream, when she was caught in the vines on Ziziphus. The sight of the stars through the window, standing in a craft meant to traverse the depths of outer space.]

Did you enjoy living a traveling life, instead of staying in one place?

No, ships in space. In the sky.

[ She has no idea how much Muffet might be able to comprehend the idea of "spaceship." She furrows her brow, considering the question. ]

I...guess so? I joined the military right out of school, so...I guess I must have, or I would have done something different.

The stars are very beautiful. I imagine it must have been a wonderful sight, to look at them from so close a distance.

[ Her face softens a little, and she smiles. ]

It was.

[ Plenty of people who'd grown up in space, or gone to work there, had grown used to the sight of the stars. It was nothing special to them. That had never been the case for CT. ]

It was amazing.

It's not bad here - there's not a lot of light pollution, like there is back on Earth. [ Her Earth, anyway. ] But it's not the same.

[Muffet smiles warmly. It's clear to her that CT truly loved the beauty of space.]

No, I imagine it wouldn't be. I only had the chance to see such a view once, but it was truly breathtaking.

[ She tries not to look surprised, but she can't help being curious. From what she'd said, it sounded like Muffet's Earth hadn't had much in the way of space travel at all. ]

You...you've been into space?

Not... precisely. It's a bit hard to explain.

[She pauses for a moment, thinking how to clarify the situation.]

One of our fellow castaways, a friend of mine, was from a world where humanity had already reached space. There was an... incident, where several of us were trapped in a sort of illusion based on their ideal worlds and the rest of us had to go in and pull them out.

I saw hers while I was retrieving her, and it was on a starship. Regrettably, the circumstances didn't leave me much time to enjoy the view.

[ Based on what she's seen so far, and especially what she's heard about the things that had happened on the islands before her arrival, it's not too hard to imagine. Still, she's glad she wasn't around for that one. ]

Yeah, I...guess they wouldn't have.

I'm glad you got her out, though.

[Muffet smiles softly. It's not a good memory, but she's still happy that they both made it out of there safely.]

So am I. She's an excellent friend, I would have missed her terribly.
