Yeah, except it can be dangerous if you don't use it right. I don't want anyone getting hurt over these things.

[Particularly when they're supposed to prevent that.]

Who said I was gonna hurt anyone with it? I know what I'm doing!

It's a gun, kid. You don't have to be trying to hurt someone to hurt them.

[Especially since flare guns don't exactly have safeties. These don't, anyway. They're simply too archaic for that.]

Well I'm not gonna, okay? Besides, you asked if I wanted one, didn't you?

It'd be safer if you had one. I just wanna make sure you know how it works first. [He's fortunate that he's dealt with kids for a while now; his patience for shenanigans like this has increased as a result.]

[So come on, let him have the cool flare gun...]

No, you don't, because I haven't told you yet.

[He starts by unloading the flare from the barrel with a soft click.]

You load the flares in here. Red warns people away. Blue tells people you need help.

Ohhhh... how many flares come with these things?

You get four to start with. Two red, two blue. You run out, you gotta ask the Storyteller for more. You load them like this.

[He demonstrates, slowly, sliding the flare into the gun's barrel until it depresses into place with a faint click.]

... How do you know so much about these things?

Because I'm the one that traded the Storyteller for them.

[And because he actually knows a little too much about how guns work - call it a side effect of growing up in Alabama. Or a side effect of being pursued by someone hell-bent on shooting him dead, and possessed of the means to do it.]

[Not as common as actual firearms, technically, but it's not like the kid needs to know that.]

They were something you could buy, if that's what you're asking.

Yeah, you know. Like...in exchange for money?

[It's not out of the question that he wouldn't have even heard of the concept, given the kind of crowd here. It's just not something he necessarily knows how to explain, because he doesn't remember a thing about economics besides the basics.]

This is the same kid who didn't know what a birthday was, why would he know anything about money being used for goods and services.]
