July Intro: Upsy-Daisy!

INTRO LOG: JULY
Who: New arrivals, your lif᷆t̕i͗n᷅ģ f̧̞ͅr̡̦̃ḭ̅ͭe̩᷅̂n̟̣̤d̨̬̏, and you!
What: New souls arrive to the archipelago of LifeAftr, and everyone makes a new friend!
When: July 5th and onward
Where: All over Ensō
Warnings: Mark as needed!

Like a Bat Out of Hell
At this stage, the appearance of new arrivals to Ensō's shores is hardly a surprise to anyone but the arrivals themselves. Whatever mysterious force is responsible seems to have taken a vaguely nostalgic route this month, depositing the new and unconscious across the shoreline of the beach closest to the tumbled stone bastion of the Storyteller's temple. At first, that seems to be all there is to it. The arrivals stir to the smell of salt and the summer sea air, and the cycle of questions, searching, and settling begins.

For about five minutes. Perhaps ten.

Almost like an afterthought, something else shows up, plummeting straight out of the sky and landing with a veritable explosion of water some hundred feet from the shore. A large, rectangular shape breaches the surface after a few moments, bobbing, cork-like, in the foam-crested waves before ever so slowly beginning to sink into those aquamarine depths. For those familiar with such objects, it makes for a rather odd sight. That most certainly was an elevator, or you can be...fairly sure it was?

Give it another minute, and you'll be certain. The elevator streaks out from the ocean like a creature possessed. Maybe, in those split seconds prior to its approach, you'll be able to note the elevator's distinct features: a disturbingly smiling face on its doors, and a set of teeth framing a very organic mouth.

Meet Upsy, your lifting friend.
In case it wasn't obvious by now, Upsy is far from a conventional elevator by any standards. What's more, Upsy has not taken to LifeAftr as well as some others. Armed with the ability to move in any direction, the rogue contraption takes no prisoners - by which we mean, they take as many prisoners as possible. Upsy proceeds to swoop across the shoreline, combing the beach in the most haphazard and patternless path possible, scooping up anyone slow enough to be caught in their maw. Once you're caught up in their jaws, it comes down to the winds of fortune, in regards to wherever Upsy proceeds to spit out their cargo. While the journey itself will be rough and...sticky, it is not inherently dangerous.

Hopefully, the same can be said for wherever you end up Ensō hosts a great deal of predators, environmental hazards, and worse. Though you could always end up belched into the ocean. Hope you can swim!

When the Metal is Hot and the Engine is Hungry
Upsy’s reign of terror isn't restricted to mere adventurers. Those with livestock or animal companions may be in for a small shock or, perhaps more likely, a very large one, when flying elevator sucks up those cuddly critters with a grin and spirits them off into the great unknown.

Though your phoenix, chocobo, or tigerlily may not be where you saw them last, you can at least be assured that they are still on Ensō. All you need to do is round them up. And if this isn't good enough news, well...at least you don't keep bludrocs.

Whether you're out searching for an animal or not, be careful traversing Ensō for the next three days. If Upsy is empty, they'll most certainly snap you up. And if they aren't? You may find anything from birds to horses spat out at you.

The velocity of these organic projectiles tends to vary. Dramatically. Upsy's reign of terror will end on the evening of July 9th. At that point, the elevator will fly off to greener pastures...and our RNG spreadsheet for potential encounters in future. Sweet dreams.

All new arrivals will awake with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!

As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.

It had been a fine day. Hinata had ventured out to get a good look at the plants on the island to see what he could transplant of medicinal use. He'd heard someone approaching while he was checking a small plant and looked up to see...

His brain shied away from describing the events. Everything happened so fast he is on his feet too late to stop Komaeda from being devoured.

"Hey!" His blood turns to ice at the fleshy inside of the elevator just before it snaps shut. "HEY!" Lily the Tigerlily rubs up against his leg as he loosens his ax from the straps on his hip. He takes off after the damn thing while swearing to him.

"Of course a good day means something like this!"

Whatever had gobbled up Komaeda stopped and focused on the shouting Hinata, of course Komaeda wasn't that appetizing, but Hinata looked it, as well as the side salad by his side.

Komaeda got spit out, right into Hinata knocking him over, and the elevator launched forward, but Lilly ended up being the first to go in.

“Oh for-!” Hinata yells as he goes down. Lily makes a surprised noise. “What the. Did it try digesting you??” He pushes at Komaeda to get the hell off him. “We need to go after it.” This is so surreal. “I can’t believe a stupid elevator ate you!”

What the hell. Out of all things he has seen. “Why is island life always weird?!” So sue him he has had an outburst coming for a while.

"Oh! How lucky!" he had found what he was looking for, and Hinata!

Ah, but, they would need to chase it now.

"I think so, I would say it's more something else camouflaged as an elevator. It's like some sort of horror nightmare you would see in a movie," he crawled off of Hinata and outstretched his hands to help him up.
thisisourfuture: (...got to be kidding me.)

He manages to take Komaeda's hands and still look horrified at the same time. What the hell. What the hell are their lives that this feels almost normal? Hinata gets his feet under him and retrieves his axe, hefting it up onto his shoulder.

His brows come down and he looks ahead. "Whatever it is it spat you out when I got close. We'll have to grab Lily and run or it will get one of us again." He glances at him with a faint flicker of worry in his eyes.

This would be so simple if they were back home. They wouldn't be dealing with this back home. "Let's go." He sets off after the elevator that isn't an elevator. Ugh.

"Ah... I guess this was actually unlucky," he sighed and went off after Hinata, though, not as fast, and he lagged behind.
thisisourfuture: (...you just changed your tone.)

"We'll figure it out after!" He switches to a jog, slowing down so Komaeda can catch up a bit. "It looks like an elevator but it doesn't move like one. I couldn't figure out any pattern when I was tracking it down. Uh, maybe that was your luck happening but I'm not sure??"

God. They were doing fine just making medicine and growing herbs and trees. Why this. "I was trying to find more plants we could use. I want to refine that sedative plant. ...wait. ...would we have to run if I took what I gathered of the sedative and toss it in that thing's mouth?"

"If it can be absorbed through soft tissue and that thing isn't immune it should work," since inside was very much like the inside of a mouth. "We could also try baiting it. I dont think it's much of a plant eater," he slowed down completely to catch his breath. This was the time to formulate a plan, right?
thisisourfuture: (There's something we're missing here.)

"That's what I mean. When it goes for one of us we throw it in. ...I'll throw it in. My aim is pretty precise." If Komaeda did it, it would subject to his luck, right? Maybe? He's not sure since he seems to act like a nullifier.

"If this works we can keep the peace for a little while." No one will get held in a gross mouth for a while. It's not as bad as murder islands but, having a bit of peace is still precious.

"I'll leave it to you then, Hinata kun," he really didn't have much more to add at the moment. It sounded like a good plan, and he trusted Hinata's judgement and aim. If anyone was going to resolve this situation properly it would be him.

He could try to drug it. Or he could rely on a carefully thought out series of outcomes. The moment he gets into combat his mind will shift like it always does, opening up and sending him past the door into the sea of possibility beyond it.

Komaeda is leaving it to him. His luck will factor in. He can't predict where things will do until the moment they enter the fray. Hinata scratches at the back of his head with a frustrated noise in the back of his throat. "I'll figure it out." He mutters and leads them in their chase of the very hungry elevator.

He's not sure how far of a lead it has on them. Even on his own, he'd have paced his approach. "If you see it before I do. Call out. I mean it. Don't let it just come at-"

About that. The elevator is heading right for them.
