the morning will come again [open]
Who: Laurent
crosslaced and you!
What: Finally some SOL times. Magic practice, doodling, etc.
When: 2/8 - 2/14
Where: Around Enso
Warnings: -
[ mana pool ] past the end of this cold winter
[When Laurent rests by the mana pool these days he seems to be mulling something over, carefully playing with his Soul gem. He hasn't developed new magic recently. It must be the distance from Nyoi-Cho - the archipelago's magic is incompatible with his, apparently. So is he stuck?
So he's sometimes in his magi outfit, working on his magic- specifically, floating a bunch of things Harry Potter -wizard style. Look mom, he’s juggling with no hands!]
[ chamber of glyphs ] until the flowers bloom again,
[The blonde can also be found for extended periods inside the chamber of glyphs, living out some long-neglected instinct to hole himself up in sheltered story-filled places. I’m really talking about libraries, but survivors can't be choosers.
He's not always drawing. Sometimes he's puzzling over craftwork- fitting spearheads onto shafts, figuring out boxes, figuring out how to work around not having nails. For someone who likely has no idea what he's doing he's not doing a terrible job? He learns quickly, and these things are certainly not structural masterpieces but they work. It even seems like he might be enjoying the trial and error.
But when he does draw, it's horses. If you see an extra dozen horses around it's probably him, practising with a reference on his phone. You might also see a simple stick figure drawing of two people- one with straight yellow hair, one with curly brown- that look like they're holding hands… but he's never going to admit to that one.]
[ wildcard ] stay there a little longer
[talk to me about something else if nothing here interests you! laurent lives on islet 1.]

It is there he goes again today, he hasn't drawn anything yet. Apart from drawing moogles for playing cards that one time Reno insisted on them having a vacation he's never drawn anything. He's building himself up to trying though, he thinks drawing is safe. Won't cause him to panic, his lack of drawing skills has never hurt anyone he loved.
He blinks when he sees someone there, someone drawing a horse. It's no one he recognises, but that's not surprising. He still doesn't know many people at all here, he woke up not too long ago.] Oh hello [A smile and a wave.]
no subject
His drawing hand stills when he hears someone else's footsteps nearing. Laurent glances back, not exactly anxious about unfamiliar company, but there is a keen awareness in his eyes as he looks over the newcomer.]
Hello.
[He'll keep watching for a few moments before turning his attention back to the walls. But even then he surveys his work instead of continuing to draw (it keeps part of his attention free to see, if only out of curiosity, what Xion will do next.)]
no subject
Shion smiles and watches the man as he surveys the drawings. He's making some assumptions the first being that this place is communal and he's not trespassing. No one has told him otherwise so far in his explorations.
The second is that this man is like him. Someone who woke up on these islands and is from a different world. He's aware that there are people native to this world. Xion had said the Jormann were. But he knows no way to tell. It's not like the tower where all the residents wore collars.
Thirdly is that this man is probably not going to murder Shion just for talking to him. This is less an assumption and more Shion likes people and talking to them enough to take the risk. That kind of trust has backfired on Shion before but...]
Are all the horses yours?
no subject
Here to give me constructive criticism?
[He's still got a class or two to take on friendliness?]

No, this place is public. [Diplomatically, he nods towards the urn of chalk.] You can add to the drawings, if you’d like.
no subject
[It doesn't... look like it from what he can see, but this is a cave of art. It might as well be an ancient tome in a far flung language for all Shion can understand it.]
no subject
If there is a theme, I certainly can't tell. I wouldn’t worry too much.
no subject
He had only ever drawn once before. It hadn't even really been drawing, he'd just copied exactly what Reno had drawn. But it was a good memory. Reno had just come back from dying, he had declared a vacation and taught them to play cards.
Shion brought the chalk to the wall and began to draw. He was very focused, remembering the images on the playing cards they had made. Drawing on a wall wasn't easy but he drew four creatures, one next to another.]
no subject
Pointing at the bird-like creature,]
… is that a Chocobo?

no subject
No they don't exist in my world but they exist in my dads world he was the one who showed me how to draw these four things. [He pointed at the first image] That's a moogle, my world doesn't have those either, but my sister's does even though hers doesn't have chocobos.
no subject
Until he sees the horses of course. There's so many of them and they're all so cute and pretty, and he wishes they were real. He doesn't notice Laurent there until he looks at the newest horse and sees him.]
Hey! Did you draw all of this?
no subject
Laurent lowers his phone to return eye contact and stares, expressionless.]
Yes. What about it?
no subject
[He smiles and points at the drawing he's doing right now.]
Can you teach me how to draw one?

glyphs
Today is no exception and while she immediately spots Laurent in the chalk covered chamber, she doesn't say anything to announce her presence. He looks absorbed with his task, like he's doodling something fun, and she graciously waits a moment before ruining his quiet afternoon.]
Is that Maribelle?
no subject
Hm… it's supposed to be, but I'm not very good at sketching.
[He places his smartphone screen forward next to the chalk drawing, showing her a comparison between the two. The reference photo he is using is Horse Photo #356.]
no subject
It looks like her-You did it.
[It's impressive to her regardless of how good it is. Her artistic talents border between preschooler and caveman-she's got no right to judge.]
Can I draw her too?
no subject
[It would be a stretch to say that his face lights up at the compliment, but he does seem genuinely pleased. Goddamn Laurent just because you got complimented doesn't mean you don't still draw like a grade school child.]
Thank you. Go ahead- do you want a photo to draw from, or should I get her here instead?
no subject
We should bring her. She can see your nice drawing and 'neigh' at you.
[She'll be so proud of her owner.]
no subject
I don’t know if she can fit in here, but let's try.
[Let's go get the neigh! She's grazing outside.]
no subject
She's on her feet without another word, ambling towards the entrance of the doodle chamber. They still have to go through the Storyteller's temple and that short walk is the only reason she doesn't just bust on outta here to get Maribelle on her own. Come on Laurent!]
If she doesn't want to come, we can show other people your pretty drawings.
chamber of glyphs
[They are not so unlike the monoliths, in many ways.]
[Eventually, they draw level with the only other person in the chamber, brushing gloved fingertips against the renditions of four-legged, hoofed beasts to which they cannot put a name.]
[When they speak, it is, as always, over the text issued from their HUD, projected via the sprite hovering at their shoulder.]
strange animal
many like it?
no subject
Text? That's unusual. He blinks for a moment, then writes a reply on the wall with the chalk he was using.]
Not here. But where I come from, yes.
no subject
[They ought to know.]
what is it
no subject
It's a horse. I have better pictures, would you like to see?
[Would the Drifter like to see horse photos in the literal hundreds? If that's what they want, Laurent will start pulling out photos on the phone in his hand for them. All of the same damn horse. In most of them there are single storey suburban houses in the background, because the ones taken on Enso suffer from a cracked camera. The way to a man's heart is through his horse apparently?]
no subject
have many of them?
[The pictures all seem to resemble one particular animal, but there are...many, many drawings on the chamber walls. Various facsimiles of the same beast, perhaps?]
no subject
Only 2. You've seen one of them.
no subject
[They gesture at the drawings on the walls with a sweep of one gloved hand, at the manifold illustrations that adorn the chamber's planes.]
no subject
It's customary for us to exaggerate material depictions. Partly as a form of prayer for that kind of wealth to be in the kingdom’s future.
[This is bullshitting on both sides of the fourth wall and I hate it]
Since the storyteller draws power from stories, I felt it would be helpful either way.
no subject
[No, seriously, it does. Literally nothing about this explanation seems off to them. Some gods draw their power from their acolytes, and some draw them from sacrifice, and this god draws their power from stories. Why should this not, too, apply? The Drifter nods, serious as ever.]
need more?
[They're not an artist, but they will gladly attempt more horses for you, sir.]
no subject
He's also always interested in more horses.]
I wouldn't say no to more.
no subject
[It's not perfect, but they're very studious as they do it. Though they make the mistake of trying to give the horses paws instead of hooves, because why wouldn't they have hooves?]
[They step back once finished, regarding their masterpiece with their head tilted to one side.]
[They don't usually do this. They're not one for recreational...uses of anything. Everything has its purpose. Everything is done for a specific reason.]
[Again, Ren is who they must thank for this change.]
Chamber Of Glyphs
We seem to have a number of people interested in art.
