I want to see mountains again, Gandalf, mountains! [Open]
Who: Marcille and OTA
What: Marcille and Chara decide to explore the mountains, find lizardchickens.
When: 8/16 and beyond
Where: Enso F4, the mountains near the beach
Warnings: N/A
[ Marcille climbed ever higher, relying on her staff at times to give her that extra boost up. At length, she stopped for a brief swig of water. She shaded her eyes and looked back down at the terrain down below, past the rockiness of the cliff. ]
I liked going down steep paths a lot better.
[ Though little signs of life were about for those who were on the lookout for them, Marcille was more focused on finding landmarks and food than the local wildlife. It therefore came as a complete surprise when a swooping, crow-sized, lizard-tailed creature stole her comb right out of her hand. ]
Why, you...! Give that back!
[ More cries like the one from the pterax that had taken her comb could now be heard in the distance. Goddammit. ]
I need that, you scaly pigeon!
[ Of course, after the initial ordeal was over, Marcille ended up with a few trussed 'birds' and a number of eggs carefully stowed in her pack for the trip back. ]
Ha! If I had some extra rice, I could make some oyakodon. Oh, well! Let's see... roast bird? Hard-boiled eggs? Both at the same time?
[ She was practically drooling at the thought. Shellfish were well and good, but sometimes you just needed some solid fat and protein in your diet. ]
Maybe I should save the eggs for Muffet and see if they'll do for baking...
[ Over the past weeks, Marcille had stumbled upon some strange seeds -- and a few root vegetables in foraging. She couldn't do much with the carrots but eat them outright, but potatoes, now -- those she could handle! With her knife, she busily began cutting into a potato that had begun to sprout, separating out the eyes to plant later.
It was honest work, and her recent experiences had made this sort of work easier. Maybe her garden would even rival Senshi's... one day. ]
Let's see, where should I put these...?

The long walk (for Chara)

Combing the area

Counting chickens

Cultivating your strengths

Let's see, where should I put these...?

[She blinks thoughtfully and frowns, something nagging at her...]
Ah. I don't mean to be alarming, but I suspect your little thief may not have been working alone.
no subject
Uh-oh. You don't think they're the swarming type, do you?

[Raising four of her hands, Muffet concentrates and weaves out more lines of purple light as quickly as she can, stringing them from tree to tree overhead in a cross-crossing pattern, creating a rough net above them.]
That won't hold back anything like that whole flock, but maybe it will hinder them enough for us to try and pick off the ones that make it through.

[ The cloud became ever louder with the indignant calls of angry pteraxes. ]
Right now, it'd be best to focus on dealing with the reinforcements. An explosion, but with finesse. Yeah, a gently enfolding explosion...
[ That last Marcille muttered under her breath, as if to motivate herself. Just in time, in fact, as the flock descended on them. The first few to get caught by Muffet's net were a win, though the others quickly realized that the lines were something to avoid if possible. Marcille, not wanting to lose the chance, aimed a gout of flame just above the beginning of the net, where a great knot of the pteraxes had formed.
The smell of cooked lizardbird and feathers filled the air, as well as the sounds of angry cawing and screeching. ]

[Muffet holds back and lets Marcille handle the majority, keeping an eye out for any sneakier ones that make it through so she can send a few bullets their direction. Anything coming their way?]

One such creature dodged Marcille's swing, only to ensnare itself in Muffet's net. ]
I think we've dissuaded most of them! Talk about a grudge...!

[ said Marcille... who was now busily picking up the dead animals. Look, waste not want not ok. ]
I wonder how these taste... maybe like chicken?
no subject
It certainly seems worth finding out- perhaps we should save the feathers, too, they might wind up being useful later.
no subject
I remember field-plucking something bigger. Maybe they'll make good pillow stuffing. Anyway, it'll be good to get some more protein in our diets.
[ She looked up. ]
By the way, Muffet, can you climb on those lines? Where do they come from?

[ Uh oh magic nerdery incoming. ]

We cast from our own energy, guided by the appropriate virtue or emotion for the type of magic we're using. There are seven colors of magic, the kind I use most often is purple magic, associated with the virtue of perseverance.
no subject
We don't sort it into subtypes or anything; I guess the main difference is in how you end up using it, like healing magic or offensive magic.
[ She paused in the middle of picking up a bird. ]
Say... I've run across some root vegetables lately. And we've got flour, salt, chicken... sort of, and eggs...
Doesn't it seem like we've got the ingredients for pot pie?
no subject
[She smiles delightedly.]
I do believe you're right- I know I've got water to work with, and I can improvise my way around a lack of butter by using coconut oil... all we really need at this point is a good place to set up for baking.
no subject
Wonderful! You're the baking expert, Muffet -- what kind of setup would we need? Wood to fuel the fire, I'm sure...
no subject
Thank you, dearie- although I'm sure you're quite skilled yourself. Wood, yes, I think I have a bit of properly-dried driftwood in my pack, still, and a couple coconuts left for the oil, too...
Really, I think the main thing would be to find a spot on the beach or a slightly more rocky area- I'd rather not risking starting a forest fire because a few stray sparks got into the undergrowth here.
no subject
[ She stuffed the last of the birds into her pack and shrugged it on. ]
I've got a good feeling about this!
no subject
[Muffet picks up the last of her own birds and turns to follow her, making a polite 'after you' motion with one hand.]
no subject
By the way, I hope you don't mind me asking all those questions about your magic. You see, I study magic back home -- particularly the ways in which it can be practically applied.
It's something I was interested since before I entered the magic academy.
no subject
I'd enjoy hearing more about how magic works in your world, if you like.
no subject
And of course, there are also places which generate mana. One of the most powerful sources of it tend to be dungeons... like the old Golden Country.
I'm not sure that's it's quite the same thing as how your magic works, though. I mean, mana doesn't make up our bodies. Although I do get worn out when mine's low.
no subject
I don't think we have places that are a source of magic, exactly, although crops grown in a magically-rich method over a period of years will eventually gain unique magical properties of their own, and can eventually become self-sustaining for those effects.
How are these places dangerous, exactly?
[Mulling over further questions, she suggests:]
So... mana is more like air for you, perhaps? An outside substance, but one important enough that it would harm you to lose it?
For us, we're made up of a very small amount of physical matter that our magical energy uses to form a body that can interact with the rest of the physical world- it's why we don't leave bodies behind when we die.
no subject
I wouldn't say mana was like air, exactly, though there are some similarities in the way that it flows through the environment. Not having enough mana is like being deprived of sleep -- you tire more easily, you're weaker, and of course you can't cast magic until you recover.
[ Marcille looked thoughtful. ] So you're really not much like the monsters back home at all... they definitely leave bodies behind when they die.
You mentioned that there were different types of magic, didn't you? If you can use 'perseverence' magic, does that mean you're a particularly stubborn individual?
no subject
[Muffet has a grave look for a brief moment, then continues on to more cheerful topics.]
It's not exactly that simple- perseverance, like all of the seven virtues, is a complicated concept and there are many ways to express it. People do tend to have more of an aptitude for a magic whose virtue they can connect with on a personal level, but it's not a sure thing and you can never tell exactly how they'll express it.
Besides, purple is only the one I'm best at- I do also know how to use green fairly well. I can manage some of the very basics with gold, too, but I've never done much beyond that.
