The Overview: Aftermath
The small island of Chol won't be present for much longer; its fertile center has been singed into a husk of brown-red canyon, and what's left of the rudimentary encampment and defenses set up during the nightly siege from the month prior have started to be disassembled in earnest. The sea-dwelling, serpetine Jormun have already started trickling back into the depths of the ocean below, though some stragglers remain, including the leader known as Munin.
All new arrivals will awaken with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!
Daytime: Dancing All Alone in the Morning Light
Still, the Jormun are doing their best to say their goodbyes with style. Those who wake on Chol's shores may quickly find themselves drawn to the noises of celebration at the island's craggy center.
At the dip in the middle of the island, the remaining Jormun have taken to mourning their dead and celebrating their own survival in the manner traditional to their culture: with a solemn send-off, paired by an exuberant celebration of who the fallen were in life. It does no good for one's final memories of the deceased to be ones of sadness and mourning, and so they see fit to raise their voices in utter jubilation, to sing to those who have passed on that their sacrifice was not in vain.

The Jormun will also be seen happily picking up some of the charred black-and-red feathers shed by the firebird when it took flight into the sky. Some might even take to threading them to their fins and gills, or offering to do the same to your hair, if you like. They insist it's for good luck, though they'll also be affixing them to round pebbles and pretty shells to give them out as talismans.
The festivities will last until February 9th. At that point, the Jormun will gladly give over whatever supplies they have not packed away at this point - cloth from their tents, as well as the leftover food that they're certain would spoil on the return journey to the seafloor, and warn everyone they see that they really ought to be getting back to the mainland before the next morning.
However, they won't be abandoning you forever. Munin is certain to leave a gift on Islet 4: a Schovskal, which looks to be some sort of large conch shell. Exceptionally large.
This five feet high and seven feet long mammoth of a shell now glimmers on one end of Islet 4, both as a reminder of the alliance struck between Jormun and story-walkers and as a means to call upon the Jormun for aid.
Nighttime: Don't Tap the Glass
Each night, as darkness falls, the Jormun are certain to light several fires encircling their encampment as a precautionary measure. For if you wander outside that protective circle of flame, you might discover that some of the beasts from the week of the siege upon the sun have decided to linger in hope of some easy prey.

Stay in the light, or risk facing a little taste of what January was like; all four of these remaining creatures is more than capable of making your life something of a misery.
As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.
Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

B
She remembers a dream. Not one set on an ocean covered in ice, where she met a boy after months of waiting. It was one she had after their first meeting. The image is fuzzy-she can't remember the contents of it. Only that she felt a deep sense of regret at running from the warm touch of his hand and began to make doodles to guide him to her, even as she kept running.
Because she remembers the feeling the remained after she woke up. How it stuck with her that someone's out there and I'm not alone. She remembers wanting help and knowing he wouldn't-fearing he would. Meeting him rekindled emotions she thought had been lost in the wake of everyone's death. Even before she fully knew the extent of his kind heart.
But she spots him in the crowd and there's a resurgence of that feeling all over again. Of happiness and hope and-]
We did it.
[She says quietly. There's no way he could possibly hear her from this distance, but she's not saying it to him. For him, maybe, because he finally made it.
She never doubted him. Not for one moment.
And she kind of has to take in the expression on his face-a wide-eyed, unsure look at the bizarre world around him. Where he's trying to make sense of this unnatural place that will begin to feel home before he knows it.
He's doesn't know how happy he's going to be here-how much is left for him to experience and how the kindness of everyone will reach him beyond a free glass of hot chocolate. She wants call out to him, but her voice catches in her throat. Her eyes are wet and things are starting to blur-
She's so happy. It takes only a second to close the distance between them and she chokes out a-]
Seto!

And then he met a girl with silver hair. She was the first person he had met since his Grandpa passed away. And she felt warm. Alive.
He wasn't alone.
And so a journey to meet someone became days of following the girl, through abandoned subways, old carnivals, haunted hotels and finally Tokyo Tower itself. He met and lost people and then eventually found her again. Helped put to rest the ghost of a bitter AI.
And then she told him her name. Ren.
One day they both fell asleep and he dreamed of an island surrounded by ice. A promise made with someone dear even though he'll see her once he woke up. Seto didn't remember what happened next, but he woke up on that island. And here he is now, staring at those intermingling with each other.
The sight of so many people had him dumbfounded but that familiar voice has him looking up.]
Ren?
[And Seto is on his feet immediately, although he puts the cup down first. He didn't want to break one of the first whole thing he's found in a long time. But the thought of it is the last thing on his mind as Seto reaches for Ren's hands to hold.]
Ren! Are you okay?
[If that dream was really real like this was, then his last 'memory' is being chased by those sharks. Was she okay? He has a first-aid kit for the first time, so that could help...]

[When he reaches for her, she grasps his hands as quick as she can. It's almost instantaneous-the moment she's able to recognize this warmth as real, when she can hear him say her name again, it's just-
All the months and weeks without him, arriving on a raft, trapped with two kind strangers. Wandering around an island alone, without any cats to guide her until she found one stuffing himself with sugar because he couldn't figure out how to hunt. The fear of simultaneously being alone and surrounded by others who did everything they could to ease every anxiety she had while she waited for him. The week spent alone in a cave with disease and death soaking every inch of it-the days just before spent in pitch black darkness, almost meeting her end in the jungle because she couldn't calm herself down without him there-
It hits her at once how much time she's spent without him and how deeply she missed his comforting presence by her side.
All that begins to ebb away. Every painful moment she spent alone, where she would think about him and pad her thoughts with lies-that he was on another island, that he was still on this island, that he might be underground or in whatever is up in the sky-because it made her temporarily feel better.
It's overwhelming and she can't stop the way her tears start to fall.]
You did it. You found me. I was looking for you and-
[The elves are going to braid beautiful flowers into his hair. He's going to see what it's like to play with spices. He's going to sit with Guzma and play tag with Goli. He's going to meet a nice dog for the first time in his life. Her favorite cat is going to sit by him and feel his kind heart. He's going to see what it's like to feel happy and loved and she's-]
It's okay. You're here now so it's okay.

And he should know what it feels like to be completely alone. So his reaction to seeing Ren start to cry is to pull her into a gentle hug.
He had no way of knowing how long Ren was alone on this island. Seto's abilities only worked with items and the feelings felt from them. But right now it's pretty easy to tell what she's feeling.
And he understands.]
I'm here Ren.
[And he's not going to let go if he can help it.]
I'm sorry I couldn't find you sooner. But we're together again.
no subject
When they're this close, she can hear his beating heart. Thinks she can tell what it's feeling, even with her ability dampened. She hears the methodical, soft sound it makes and knows his isn't going to stop like hers, someday.
Knows that it'll keep beating and beating. That he's going to have the life he deserves from here on, surrounded by others. It makes her grip the front of his jacket, twisting the fabric in her fingers, because she doesn't want to let go. Doesn't want a dream or this new island to take him away from her.
She wants to say don't be sorry because there are facets of the world she doesn't understand. For all the happiness it's given her, she never understood how she ended up here first. Why, if there was a choice between them, anyone would pick her to come to this island over this boy who did so much more. A boy that has so much warmth and bravery in his heart-]
Seto doesn't have to say 'I'm sorry'. You always find me. That's how it is.
[She knew to wait and did her best to search for him in turn.]
I can feel your kind heart again so-I'm very happy.
no subject
But.
But he was going to keep going as long as he could. Hand-in-hand with the girl that was the first person he met since his Grandpa and the beginning of his loneliness being revealed. A journey that spanned long enough for them to end walking away from the tower together.
He doesn't want to let go either. He's not going to let go Ren.]
And I can feel yours. [Something to affirm. Even if Ren ran to begin with, she choose to stay. The warmth of someone who walked with him hand-in-hand was something he'd never forget.]
Thanks for waiting for me.
no subject
He says that and the fog clouding her vision starts to lift. Her eyes burn less-she's able to blink the tears away and not feel them reform when she does. Because of course he would say something that kind to her. He's always like that.
She remembers the way he said thank you the first time, on top of that tower, when he freed her from a life she never thought she could escape from. Those words meant everything to her then, because she couldn't remember hearing them before. Thank you like he believes she's someone worth thanking.
It makes her think she might be, a little bit, and a small smile starts to bloom across her face.]
Yes, I'll always wait for Seto-no matter what. You're-
[Everything. Because they're supposed to be together, until her heart stops beating. Because he's supposed to find her and she's supposed to wait and that's an easy routine for her to rely on. To remember. No matter how alone, no matter how scared she gets, she can wait-
He'll find her.]
I waited in a good place. It's somewhere you'll be very happy.
no subject
It lead him to the moments where he met PF, Crow, and Sai. Where he met Ren. All of that, all the death and pain, was worth it. He wouldn't take it back.
And if Ren was going to wait for him, then Seto would find her. Every time.]
Yeah? What kind of place is it?
[Did it make her happy to be in that place too?]
no subject
It's amazing.]
It's a whole island like this one.
[The ocean is terrifying. The caves are scarier. There are monsters that roam and sometimes shadows appear at night, but it doesn't phase her when so many other people are around. It's not just them anymore and she knows Seto won't be afraid-he's just like the brave people here.]
People smile at you. They give you food and ask 'how are you?' and play with you.
[Relinquishing the vice grip she has on his back, she raises her hands to press them against his head, lightly ruffling his hair.]
They do this to make you happy and hold your hand when you're scared. It's that kind of place. It's very good.
no subject
It is a good place.
[Because to them, a place where they're given food - and could have seconds and thirds if they wanted - was an amazing idea made a reality. A place where there were people who would smile at them and ask how they were doing and play with them was probably something he dreamed about once but never thought he'd actually see it.
It really is a good place.]
Is it okay if we go?
[Seto wants to see it, if it's possible.]
no subject
I'll take you, but I have to show you [Pause] 'home'? That kind of thing.
[Her eyes scan the crowd and a surge of excitement runs through her because he doesn't know-can't even begin to fathom that there are two people that will show him what it means to feel safe and happy. ]
They're people, but I think that's what they feel like. I want Seto to see them first.
no subject
It's not that Seto doesn't understand the concept. He's read about homes and families in the books from the observatory and that place had been a home until his Grandpa passed away. Even if they didn't talk much, Seto's Grandpa was still the one who raised him.
But the idea of people being home, more then one person, was another thing entirely. A place where it's okay to have seconds of food and a place where it's safe for everyone to fall asleep without a fire.
The threat to the world itself had ended with Shin and Sai passing on, but that didn't mean the world was fixed. Everything moved on the way it had and nothing could stop that. It, along with death, were inescapable facts.
But there's hope, even if it's a ten year old lunchbox or a building with only one door or four intact walls. And in this place, it seems there was a lot more then that.
After all, Ren's smile was still blinding and her laughter still made him smile. For however many countless seasons that may last in this place, if the silver-haired girl was able to continue smiling and laughing, then that was enough.
That's all Seto will ask for.]
Then let's go see them. I want to see everyone who makes you happy.
no subject
But she doesn't. She can't. Not until she's sure he understands what home means. What family means. What it feels like to have someone smile at you because they're happy to see you.
And so begins their animated little adventure, swerving around snake people and little areas covered with seafood. Animated, because she makes it point to raise her hand as she drags him along, placing it up to her ear to show him how they extend out on the two nuggets she's guiding him towards, so he'll recognize them immediately.
It continues until she spots them and her elated voice probably carries further than she means to with how happy and excited and relieved she is.]
This is-it's Seto! He did it! He found me!
[LOOK AT HER BOY!!!!]
no subject
"Just like you said, huh." Ren, though, can get some kind of reverse backhand I-told-you-so, full of pride he probably doesn't actually have any right to? Her joy is contagious, but Taako keeps his grin to something deceptively lazy and reserved while he inspects Ren's latest find, which is a whole entire human person she is dragging their way. What's the horsepower on an Activated Ren? Looks pretty high.
Predictably, this boy is a grubby urchin. Seems pretty dedicated to containers, that's points in his favour, which he'll sorely need. Look, Taako's met Ren, and she doesn't appear to have exercised a character judgment once in her life. She thinks Taako is a good person, so like, there's something not calibrated right there. It's part of why he's so conscious of her wellbeing. Maybe even concerned. He wonders how much like Ren this refugee from her same world will be. Is he more 'with it'? Boy that would be weird. Better make it weird preemptively.
"Hail and well met," he almost manages to present this seriously, perhaps helped along by his full wizarding hat-inclusive height; it doesn't last. "And uh, good job, lil dude. Ren never doubted you for a second."
no subject
He found me is a particular kind of joy Lup knows all too well and she's beaming with delight and relief on Ren's behalf before the two kids even come to a stop in front of them. Much like Taako, she inspects the boy critically, though she remembers when Ren had told her about him, had touched her hand and said He's a person that makes you feel this way. For all Ren's naivety when it comes to people, Lup understands she wouldn't associate that with just any fool who maybe smiled at her once. This boy's special.
"So you're Seto, huh? Took you long enough!" She's kidding, but only a little bit, though there's not an ounce of recrimination in her voice as she grins up at him. She'll get up to greet him properly in a second for sure. Or maybe everybody could just sit down, that'd be sweet too.
no subject
But here, there's lights and sounds. Food, so many people people and a grip on his hand that's painful but Seto isn't going to ask Ren to let go. His own grip was just as tight and he can't stop himself from smiling at it all and just how happy Ren was with all of this.
And to him, that was the best thing he could ask for. A place where she could smile that wide and happy.
Eventually they stop in front of a pair of people. Taako and Lup's assessment of Seto is correct: a very skinny kid who's regarding them with a look that's a mixture of curiosity and awe - he has not met twins before. Ren had described the pair during their walk but it was one thing to see people in person then hearing about them. Just like seeing an intact world was different then hearing about it from the memories of the items Seto found across his journey.
And these two were colorful, physically and in the way they smile. An easy greeting from the man and the woman's joking tone earns a smile and a little laugh from Seto, even if it's clear he's also nervous.
"Um, yeah I'm Seto." A little awkward, but he's going to keep going. "It's nice to meet you two."
no subject
She starts to swing their joined hands slowly, back and forth, like she's trying to give him something else to concentrate on outside of speaking to a world full of strangers.
"They look the same, but their hearts are different," She starts off, pausing to collect her thoughts because differentiating between them is second nature to her, even without Taako's hat to help guide her down the correct twin path. The way they talk, smile, stand, cook-they're similar, but very different. Until he learns to see the two elves as individuals-gets an opportunity to enjoy their differences on his own, she's gotta lay it down for him. "You can tell when you look in their eyes. Aunt Lup has a strong heart, like yours, and Uncle Taako's heart is very kind-he's like you too. That's how you know."
For how little that said, she seems content with that explanation. It works? It helps? It did absolutely nothing, but make her beam because surely The Boy will understand. They'll sit down in a minute. She just wants to make sure he gets it.
no subject
Dang these Jormun, for having provided so much food. How else is he supposed to establish some kind of bond, with his apprentice's entirely unexpected but very important new arrival? He knows he should be doing something, probably, but if not that, what? He does seem basically as with it as a kid should be, when was the last time he was faced with that? Why's this island like this. "Ren's like...everybody here knows Ren, you know?" He grins around these less than stellar words, keenly aware that he is making an Understatement of the Century and should be doing better, but unable to do that on the fly. "Enough to turn a blind eye on allll kinds of vandalism and hooliganery. So you're gonna do just fine."
no subject
And he's just gonna start him out on the vandalism right out of the gate, huh. Too bad she can't actually find fault with that? It's a victimless crime and those shithole shacks are vastly improved by some goblin art anyway. She snorts in amusement at Taako's rambling and gives her own attempt at bonding a shot. "Hey, how do you feel about card games? And hide n seek? Ren's like, our hide n seek champion." Mostly because they don't feel like trying particularly hard to not be found when Ren is seeking. Whatever. Point is there's a ton for Seto to do here, and they're down for most of it.
no subject
He didn't know them yet but one thing was clear: they made Ren happy. And that was enough for him. A strong heart and a kind heart. Two people who looked the same but were different and blended into love. Yeah, that's enough for him.
And the vandalism comment earns another laugh. "I can draw maps pretty good." And he knows that Ren is a good drawer too so they could all make something together.
...together. That was a thought that tugged at something in Seto but hopefully before his eyes can start misting up, he goes on. "I don't know card games but I've played hide and seek before."
Once, a little before his Grandpa passed away and it was something he did when dogs were around. But he knew how to play for fun too. So again, something they can do together.
no subject
"Seto can make maps for Taako's pretty mongooses. He can draw them nice homes and hallways," There's the house vandalism and as for games-"Hide and Seek is something he's very good at. He can find anyone. He'll find you two, like he finds me. That's how it is for someone like him. We won't beat Seto. He can be the new champion."
Card games and hooligan activities will be covered in a crash course that'll start once she points out Enso's non-ghost dangers and show him the safest path to his new home. For now, she tries to guide The Boy to the ground, hoping to make him sit right by Lup, all the while singing his praises. Yes, The Best Boy. "Seto can do anything. He can run and boil water and find treasures. The cats like him too. They know it's okay to trust him."
no subject
He has a seat too, helps himself to some of Lup's wine, not like she can fight back or anything. Seems like they might be here for awhile, after all, but he can't really find it in himself to mind listening to Ren's rambling about Seto. She's just so happy it's contagious, even when he really kinda thought he was pretty well vaccinated against that kind of thing, and he finds he hasn't really stopped smiling so far. Things got kinda shitty there, for a bit. Finding people from their old homes is defs not the worst thing to come out of all that mess.
"Yeah, guess if he found you all the way here on stank island, hide n seek probably won't be much of a challenge." Taako has turned a deceptively sleepy eye back on The Boy, new-crowned Champion of Hide-n-Seek. "Card games, though, lotta untapped potential there. Could start with blackjack, that's a pretty easy game." How hard is it to teach children to count cards?
