Day 2 - Around the Island
Who: Prompto, OTA
What: Exploring and survival
When: Day 2
Where: Different places around the island
Warnings: Dumb boy
Early Morning - Oatmeal - Around Weiss' camp, OTA
As promised, Prompto went to seek out Weiss' camp with some freshly made - and sugary! - oatmeal. The way Ignis worked out perfectly good and normal meals with so few ingredients amazed him. If it was him, he'd probably be trying to figure out how sugar was supposed to go with beef.
But there he was, calling out Weiss' name with a small pot of still warm but quickly cooling oatmeal. A piece of cloth had been thrown over it in an attempt to keep in the heat. She had said she didn't know when she would be leaving in the morning. Hopefully she'd still be around.
Morning - Survival Fruit and Veggie hunting - OTA
Food was a top priority for obvious reasons. Noctis had his fishing. Ignis had his cooking. Laurent seemed to be a hunter of sorts. Nyx had the ability to lounge around with his shirt off. That left the ever popular fruits and veggies.
He'd seen much of the beach and coastal areas the day before, so he searched further inland and managed to find a palm tree with a bundle of coconuts waaaay at the top. If he wasn't short on ammo he'd have just shot them down, but he couldn't be so reckless with their limited supplies.
Instead, he could be found painstakingly improvising his way up the trunk.
Exploration - How wide is this island? - OTA
After a comfortable stash of food and drink was put aside for that day, the ever present need to figure out their dilemma rose. For the time being Ignis had chosen to stay behind, but Prompto went on ahead with everyone else who had decided to see how long it took to reach the other end of the island.
There were precautions, of course. Should the island be so wide that they couldn't make it to the other end in a reasonable amount of time, they were to head back so that they wouldn't be caught in the dark. Beyond that, it was mostly a matter of safety in numbers. No one would wander off and get lost, right?
Evening - Night at the Ruins - Open to Women and Kids
Like a good boy, Prompto was back at the ruins by evening. It was the only place with solid shelter they had thus far, and with Iggy in such poor shape it wouldn't have been a good idea to go camping in the wilderness without any camping gear.
The chill of the night air rose, and after keeping to himself for some time he finally got to his feet and walked over.
"Hey... You look cold," he said as he shrugged off his thick winter coat and offered it.
Evening - Night at the Ruins - Open to dudes
For a while Prompto could be found tucked into a corner, quietly trying to get his phone to work. It would've been nice to place some King's Knight with Noct... They didn't have a place to plug their phones in, but maybe he could hook it up to a Leiden potato or something.
While he was putting his phone away a burst of wind cut through the ruins, creating a haunting howl. Prompto tensed up, scrunching up tighter until the wail subsided. Glancing at the man next to him, he asked with a forced smile, pretending that he wasn't bothered at all. "Hey, you, uh, don't think these ruins are haunted, do you?"

She wasn't ruling it out. Unless she could find a way to get it untangled properly, the only thing that was going to happen eventually was that it was going to get messy and matted to the point that birds could start nesting in it. Despite what people thought, it did take a lot of work to care for hair of this length. Braiding it was the only real way she could think of to post-pone what was possibly inevitable.
But her mind wasn't on her hair for too much longer. A couple of quick sniffs as Prompto approached told her exactly what he had as he said it.
"I love oatmeal." Weiss preferred plant-based food more often than not- well, that and breakfast pastries like crepes and croissants, but she certainly wasn't going to be picky. Oatmeal sounded excellent, and far more than she'd expected to get.
"Oh! Hold on."
She turned around and immediately went back to where she came from, this time lugging her sack along with her as she returned. She'd moved all of the non-food items into her suitcase that she'd had with her upon arrival, so she held the knap sack out to Prompto.
"If you're going to keep cooking for me, you should take what I have. We'll all be better off if we share. There's a bag of salted meats in there-- beef, chicken, pork, and fish. There are also a handful of clams that I dug up after someone taught me how to find them."
There were only 2 or 3 of the clams-- she hadn't gotten that good at it yet, but honestly.. they had someone who could cook in their camp, he'd be able to do a lot more with them than Weiss could. And Prompto had been so generous, she didn't want to feel like she was mooching off of him, even if it was while she was still learning how to take care of herself in this situation.
no subject
"I don't want your stuff but if I find one I'll give it to you. But you don't use swords on things like hair, Weiss, just...no."
He couldn't stay offended of the thought of his precious family heirloom being used for anything other than fighting though, distracted by the exchange between Weiss and Prompto. The excited fidgeting fell, and he watched them both quietly. It was just food. Prompto was just being a good...friend? To Weiss, and Weiss was just doing the same. So why did he feel so weird? It wasn't quite jealousy, but more like he was an outsider looking in.
Shifting uncomfortably on his feet, he pointed out, voice quiet again. "I might have caught that fish. Maybe. Unless I didn't or it wasn't good." A shrug. He thought about moving closer to Weiss, but decided against it. "I should-- I just wanted to make sure you were okay, Weiss. As fun as this food exchange was, I need to go and find my own food and brushes and...stuff."
no subject
Accepting her sack, he took a quick peek inside just to see everything for himself. And while he was ecstatic that she was into the cooking, he couldn't take credit for something he didn't do. Especially not right now when it was what little Ignis had.
"Ah, I'm not that great at cooking. Ignis is the master chef, he can make amazing grub out of anything. But I help!" he added the last bit enthusiastically. For the time being it was necessary that someone assisted until Ignis could get his bearings. He'd always been the one that helped the most. Sort of. He set the dishes, which was one thing more than the other two did. "Are you sure you want to give this to us? I mean, you can stop by the ruins anytime you want! But isn't this all your food...?"
Of course he was worried she could end up in a precarious situation. They weren't lightyears away, but it was still different camps, which would mean she'd have to go for a walk if she wanted to eat, or depend on delivery.
He glanced at Jaune, a little more oblivious to his interest at the moment. He was too caught up in his own excitement. But he wasn't trying to ignore him. The idea that 'maybe he didn't catch the fish' rang a bell in his head. Jaune had mentioned Noctis' name, which meant they must have met.
With a soft laugh he asked, "Did Noct catch the fish?"
He didn't mean to be mocking. Mostly, he just found it amusing.
"He'd do nothing but sleep and fish if you let him. I guess that'll be pretty useful right now, huh?" Just some affectionate jabbing at his friend.
no subject
Ignoring the fact that Jaune was stating the obvious about hair not being meant to be cut with a sword (but what choice did she have? it's not like there was a salon with scissors and a blow dryer here-- it would look terrible but it would get it shorter, eventually), she's able to at least tell that something's wrong. She'd started paying more attention to Jaune after he'd finally stopped pestering her as much, so she was slightly more in tune with his odd behavior than Prompto could've possibly been.
"I was planning on going out and looking around, Jaune."
Weiss had spent more than enough time alone, away from friends or anyone besides her family and their servants really, with the occasional drop-by from General Ironwood. Despite that she had put Jaune in what had effectively been a time-out in a dream, she really didn't want to lose track of him again. It was already bothering her that she'd lost track of Ruby already.
"And this is definitely more oatmeal than I can handle alone. It'll take at least three people, and we should take advantage of Prompto's friend's cooking while we have it. I'm definitely not going to be able to cook anything decent if we get separated, so you should enjoy it while it lasts."
She's not going to directly ask him to stay, but she's definitely going to imply that he should.
no subject
"No, I caught it. Believe it or not I know how to catch stuff too." Gesturing to himself defensively, he conveniently decided to leave out the part where by caught it he meant he found the fish in his waterlogged armor. That part wouldn't sound as nearly as impressive.
Blinking, he snapped out of his thoughts for the time being, looking at Weiss with a 'What, me?' look and nodding. He was already starting to believe that Ruby was no longer here, and he didn't even want to begin thinking of what that meant. He had no idea how Weiss and Ruby got separated, and it wasn't as if they knew he was here at the time, but it was hard to ignore the sense of dread. They were supposed to stick together. But Weiss was still here. Talking to her again was surreal, and he might have been keeping some distance, but he didn't want to stay away from her.
"I'll go with you," A hint of his excitement returned and he rubbed the back of his neck when it felt hot. Had he known they shared the same dream, he might have mentioned something, but he was trying very hard not to dwell on that particular dream. His mouth was positively watering at the thought of the oatmeal. He glanced at the food, then at Prompto, then at the sand, trying not to wince. Maybe he shouldn't.
"You should eat it first." But if she insisted...
no subject
With a nod, he strapped the pack over his shoulder to take it to the ruins. As long as she would be okay it was fine. Iggy was probably the best man on the island to give the food to. Not only was he a great cook, but he was good at organizing and keeping track of supplies, and honest, too. Prompto would just have to list out what it all was for him when he got back.
"I ate back at the ruins, so you guys can share it." He glanced between them. "Maybe now's a good time to see if everyone's gotten something to eat? Are there any kids at your camp? I remember seeing some in that... dream world place."
Much as he liked girls, he didn't like the idea of any kids possibly going hungry.
"We're probably going to work on getting food and stuff today, so we can share whatever we get."
no subject
Sorry Jaune. Weiss was there, and despite that she's certainly behaving more pleasantly than she once was (out of sheer relief to have people to talk to and to see even two of her friends again) she's still Weiss. She's more than happy to sass Jaune if he's going to stay on the point about the fish for too long. The only reason she hadn't eaten the fish was because she'd been too anxious and concerned with being stranded on an island to worry about eating until Prompto had brought her prepared food.
Not that she was the hero of that story since it mostly involved her trying not to scream and drop it as it flailed around and he did actually kill the fish, but Jauneshaming is a sport she's an expert at.
That had been the only actual child she'd seen, except for Guzma- but he didn't count considering that was more a mental affliction. He can find his own food anyway because he's actually worse than Cardin, she's convinced, and she'd rather not deal with him again.
"I saw one girl, but she probably ran off looking for cats at some point. She didn't really seem scared, though. Hopefully we can find her again if another group didn't take her in. I know Tim was looking for people who needed help, and I found two of the people I saw from the dream. Well, three, but Jaune doesn't count since he's from Remnant too."
no subject
He wasn't sure how he felt about accepting food, despite being tempted to, so he dropped the subject. "I think there were a couple around the ruins." He looked at them both. It wasn't just making sure they had enough food, now there were people depending on them too. He frowned pensively. "I know a lot of us feel like we kind of remember this place, but did we have the same dream?"
no subject
"Man, I should show you guys the picture of a monster we caught one time. Over 100lbs!" He extended his arms to indicate its size. It was only too bad that was at home and not on the island. They could use a fish like that now. Maybe in time.
It was actually easier to talk with Jaune there. That way he didn't have to sit and worry about what to say the whole time.
"I think it's a shared dream. I met someone in it that knew Iggy, who I'd never met before. And he turned out to be real, and he remembered the same thing I did." He shrugged. "There's no way I could have made that up on my own. I remember seeing a little girl, but I haven't had a chance to find out who is around yet. Yesterday was kind of busy, and I needed to help Iggy cook and stuff..."
That last part got the tiniest bit sadder because of why he was helping Ignis cook.
no subject
Weiss decided that if Jaune wasn't going to try to eat anything, she would just try to eat quickly so it was still a little warm by the time she got to it. So while Prompto is explaining about the dream, she shovels a couple of bites into her mouth as best as she can. It's not very lady-like, but she doesn't exactly have proper silverware to work with here. She holds the pot out to Jaune when she's done, taking a couple of seconds to try to redeem her composure and making sure there's no oatmeal on her lips or anything. After that, she adds her experience with the dreams.
"I met a shark-person and a spider-person who have both found me here. Finley's probably somewhere around here still, I think he still wants to work out a deal since I'll be able to make at least some of us a shelter if we find an area close enough to fresh water while still being defensible." Which is an idea she's okay with. They kind of made up. She's at least not at the stage of literally icing him. "I met Prompto's friend Noctis in the dream, too, then it turned out he was here, right?" She hadn't met him again yet, but she knew that he'd mentioned him.
But if that dream was real, Weiss is probably thinking the same thing Jaune is. She knows exactly where his mind is going to go after hearing that and her voice quiets a little, a tone that's very much off, like she's speaking of something painful.
"I haven't seen her here, Jaune. We would've found her by now."
no subject
Personally, he didn't care how lady-like or un-lady-like Weiss was. She was a classy woman, even now, shoveling her oatmeal with the determination that made her stand out. He could respect that. He hesitated, before taking the pot. It still smelled good. It looked closer to home. He took a tiny bite. Damnit, it was delicious.
"I met Muffet too. Who's Finley? And I know Ignis," He said with his mouth still full. "How do we know it was really a dream?"
Suddenly he's not hungry anymore. The oatmeal feels like chalk going down his throat, having nothing to do with the actual quality. Numbly, he holds the pot out so someone will take it-- Prompto, Weiss, he doesn't care, he just wants to move away. Someone please take it.
"It was good." There's no more sarcasm or cynicism. He just sounds detached and stilted.
no subject
Or were pushed in. Or kicked in. They had a loving bromadery, really. If he realized that Jaune was putting him on a pedestal he would be shocked. He pretty much always considered himself the least useful of the four. Not as smart, not as strong, and couldn't even cook. And hadn't been allowed to drive since they left the city.
It wasn't his fault the car broke down.As it was, having another guy there helped him feel more comfortable. If he needed to he could withdraw and let someone else handle the conversation. Thankfully they seemed close in age and Jaune didn't seem to mind joking around.
Seeing Weiss dig in didn't bother him. Utensils had been something they hadn't figured out yet. She was just practical. That was cool. It was probably best for everyone if he didn't spend too much time thinking about her covered in food.
"Noctis is here," he confirmed Weiss' guess with a small nod. Though he didn't know and hadn't met the person they were talking about, he listened with concern. Was there someone they saw in the dream who they hadn't found yet? He became more reserved, taking back the oatmeal when it was held his way.
"You saw someone in the dream that you haven't found here?" He guessed. That's what it sounded like. Before now it had seemed like everyone made it over. This was something new. He could imagine how worried he'd be if he hadn't found Ignis or Noctis. He would've been beside himself with fear. Swallowing, he offered the best words of comfort he could come up with, "Maybe... that just means she's safely back home?"
no subject
"She's dead, and home wouldn't be safe if even if she was there."
That was the kind of world she and Jaune were from. The kind in which a girl their age had been convinced she needed to take charge. The kind in which Weiss had come up with a thousand and one scenarios in which she could've gotten Ruby there three seconds faster if she'd only not spent time bantering or if she had just listened to Jaune and moved instead of asking questions.
The question about Finley kind of fell flat, Weiss's focus being a little more on trying to get off the topic of Pyrrha. She still didn't know how to face what had happened. The last time someone brought it up to her and said the wrong thing, she hadn't reacted well. It had only been made worse by her family, by everything overwhelming. It had been so loud, and she just..
Weiss looked up at Jaune and then to Prompto. Jaune was her partner, he was probably doing worse than Weiss was. She needed to refocus the conversation until they could just.. figure it out. Prompto didn't need to be in the middle of one of whatever was going to happen if this subject was broached.
"I'm glad you found Noctis and Ignis, Prompto. It sounds like you're all pretty close."
no subject
He couldn't give any explanation for Prompto's question, but Weiss did it for him. It was fleeting, just a split-second, but he seemed to recoil. His chest felt hollowed out; he didn't know how he could be so empty and cold, yet still want to lash out at whatever was closest to him. He felt Weiss's focus on him, but he couldn't return the gesture, his eyes too bright and vision swimming. Silently, he begged himself to not break down right here in front of a friend and someone who seemed decent but he had just met. Someone please say something else. Something that had nothing to do with what happened. When Weiss changed the subject, he sucked in a breath. It wasn't fair to her that she was taking the lead in this. Pyrrha was her friend too, and Jaune hadn't even dared ask or try to reflect on how she was...whatever it was they were doing. He was too trapped by his own thoughts and false hope that she was here.
He was always depending on someone else, this time it was Weiss. But he couldn't contribute to the conversation. He hated himself for it but he would try to look out for her later in return, if she needed someone who was there. Just not right now.
no subject
He couldn't ask these questions now. Not with Weiss and Jaune being so down. He'd already messed up and made the situation worse. Head hung, he spoke softly, "Sorry."
Afraid that he would say the wrong thing again, he fell silent. He nodded when Weiss said that he, Ignis and Noctis seemed close. They were. They pretty much just had each other now. His eyes fell on the band covering his wrist for a second. Maybe it was best to get away.
"I should..." His voice cracked slightly as he took a step back. He pointed at the bag on his shoulders. "...get this stuff back to the ruins. Iggy's gonna want to organize it."
no subject
"Pyrrha died a hero in a war none of us knew we were going to have to fight. Anyone I know is either going to have a few things that set them off or lose the mood, that's just going to have to be a part of getting to know us. Our world is a mess, and everyone's too busy thinking about themselves or shallow, impractical things to focus on doing anything about it. Don't apologize for our world bringing down what should've been a friendly breakfast. I'm sick of pushing people away and then being locked away because I'll actually talk about what happened, so if I'm going to have someone who wants to be a friend bring me oatmeal in the morning, I'm going to enjoy it and you're not going to be sorry about it and Jaune is going to take a deep breath and keep moving forward because that's what she would want, even if it takes time."
As if to demonstrate, Weiss takes a deep breath and another bite of the oatmeal. Then once she swallows it, she looks at Prompto, then back to Jaune. Jaune might definitely notice that a lot has changed about her attitude since the last time he saw her back home.
no subject
He hadn't expected Weiss to start venting like that.
The shock of hearing Weiss being so blunt about it was enough to snap Jaune out of it. At least sort of. He started to glance over at her, confused, and forced himself to take a breath that was way too deep because what else was he going to do and Weiss had instructed him to do so. The air here tasted different, but it was fresh, more like the air in Anima then Vale. Jaune didn't know if he felt better, but he felt like he could move. Without caring, he sat down. Weiss had always been resolute to the point of being stubborn. Jaune had admired that about her. But this was different. They had all done their best to move forward, but even Ruby, the one who had given his team the will to do just that, had her moments of doubt. A few things she said disturbed him, what had happened to Weiss while she was in Atlas? He'd ask her later, when things had calmed down.
"Weiss is right." The pain in his voice isn't hidden now, no longer guarded carefully by resentment and detached words. It's uncomfortable, but honest. "You couldn't have known. You were trying to be friendly, and you can't know what everyone's thinking. You're not responsible for what happened to us or how we react." He finally looks at Prompto, his eyes still seemingly burning, but it's more confident now, almost protective. "You should both sit and enjoy your breakfast. And if you want to...I can leave." He isn't sure if he wants to, but it might make things less awkward.
"Or you can tell us more about that giant fish you caught and we can all bring the supplies back later, together. As a team."
no subject
He stayed quiet while Weiss spoke, and didn't respond immediately to Jaune, expression sullen. But then he dug out his camera and the gloomy frown faded away.
"I already had breakfast, so..." He clicked through the photos he had on it. Finally, he found what he was looking for and approached them, holding it up to see. "Toldja it was a monster. If Noctis can find a spot to catch these we'll end up with too much to eat."
There was something obvious that made it clear that it was taken a while ago - that being that Ignis was not injured in it. That was the way Prompto had been used to seeing him, but it would be new for people on the island.
"You won't believe how long he had us all standing there watching him fish..."
no subject
That's all she says on the matter then, leaning in to look at Prompto's picture.
"That's gargantuan! I would've thought that was a Grimm if I had seen it in the water."
Wait... "Is that Noctis in the back? With the hat?" Is he touched in the head when it comes to fashion like Jaune?
no subject
He glances over at the picture, does a double-take, his eyes widening at the size of it. And then...
"I guess you were pretty...whale off after that," He states with a completely straight face, still eating the oatmeal. He rolls his eyes and snorts at Weiss's next question. "No Weiss, that's obviously someone else. She's probably cute," A closer look and he noticed the difference between the Ignis he knew, and the Ignis in the picture. "Why were you just standing there?" He wouldn't comment on it, for now.
no subject
"Someone had to get the camera setup for the shot!"
Don't question why the camera is in the shot. Game logic.
He'd never heard of a Grimm, but all fish seemed to have pretty weird names. He faced the camera towards Weiss. "It's a chocobo moogle hat." This is what happens when you let Noctis dress himself. "Do you... like chocobos?"
He had to restrain himself from showing any excitement. He was a pretty big chocobo fan himself, but he wasn't ready to exclaim it from the top of the hills in front of her like he did with Noctis. Gotta stay cool.
no subject
"I have no idea what a chocobo is. Or the other thing, for that matter."
It kind of looked like something you'd get at a rally for a chicken-based fast food place, maybe? She's squinting at the picture to try to see if she can discern anything else from it, but then just adds.
"At least you and the other blonde have a better fashion sense than Jaune and Mr. Chocoboodle."
She hasn't met Ignis yet, the only one she's really sure who is in the picture is Prompto, so he's just the other blonde for now. She also doesn't look particularly confident about the word "Chocoboodle." She's never heard either term, she's going to take a minute to learn the names.
no subject
"It looks like a duck." He assumes it's some kind of bird. "Can you eat it?" His eyes light up in interest.
That light quickly dies at the expense of his dignity. "What is wrong with my fashion sense?!" His voice gets high in that annoying way it does when he's upset and he stands up to make a point. Can't Weiss see he got new jeans and shoes?
"And Mr. Chocoboodle looks cool. Him and tattoos are the only two who look like they're dressed for fishing." No offense Prompto, but his taste in fashion is at stake.
no subject
[No chocobos?! Their world really was a dark place. That had to be fixed.
He pulled the camera away protectively from Jaune at the suggestion, like he might be able to attack through the picture somehow.]
You don't eat them!
You ride them.
[As he turned it around to flip through more pics he kept talking.] Noct and Gladio are the two who get all excited about fishing, so it makes sense they'd be dressed for it. Iggy always dresses up nice. [And there he flipped it around on another picture.]
Those are chocobos. They're really cool. Oh, I have to show you something!
[Excitedly he started flipping through again.] While we were traveling we found out that a black chocobo had laid an egg, but she went missing. So we went and found the egg and brought it to the ranch. Ah, there!
[He turned it back around to a picture of a baby chocobo.]
Isn't it adorable?
[His tone was drowning in glee.
Wait. Shit. Big manly men didn't go around calling things 'adorable'. He cleared his throat real fast and tried to save face in front of Weiss.]
I mean... I'm glad we found it in time.
no subject
It's completely non-existent in her opinion. He may not have holes in his jeans anymore but except for the red sash and the updated weaponry he's wearing pretty much the same thing when he met her. Come on now, Jaune. Get with the program.
"That makes sense, though. I rode a Giant Nevermore once, though he really wasn't happy about it."
She's going to intentionally remember that very differently than what actually happened. She held on for dear life to a Nevermore and accidentally fell and Jaune caught her with his back. Thank god Pyrrha had showed him how to work his aura at that point or his cause of death would've been Weiss's ass.
"That last one looks like the pudgiest baby Nevermore if someone took its mask off."
Which actually made her look amused. She wasn't about to go squeeing over it and calling it adorable (that was something reserved for cute widdle doggy-dogs) but it was a unique thing to learn about, which she appreciated.
