NEW ISLAND: MONSUN

Who: Everyone!
What: Monsun appears, and a new adventure begins.
When: November 24th
Where: Across the islands!
Warnings: Tag as you go!

I've Never Been Better- Or Worse
As per the Storyteller's advice, the morning of the 24th will find characters waking to the sight of land in the far distance; Monsun is now accessible for one-way travel. Your mission, should you choose to volunteer for it? Traverse to this new land, and locate the mana pool. All characters will be reminded on departure that they may not be capable of returning until they have, so pack wisely.

The land of Monsun, even from a distance, may strike travelers as a peculiar one. One half appears to be made up of lush, deciduous woodland entirely at odds with the coastal, tropical aesthetic that Ensō so boasts. The other half appears to be dry and bare, full of cracking cliffs and sandy wastelands. Indeed, once characters set foot on this new land, they will discover that this is precisely the case: the island is divided by a dark ribbon of water, an east side rich with life and a west side stark and rife with danger.

And yet, it isn't that simple.

Feeling prepared? Now is the time to make arrangements and collect what you'll need for the journey. Find companions, say goodbye to loved ones- and of course, take your first step forwards into new lands. Best of luck, adventurers.

Mickey gulped. "...So maybe if we see somethin' that's too good to be true, it probably is?"

"I think that absolutely describes our experience here," Roy said without any particular rancor. "So far, I don't think anything we've experienced has been even mostly positive, bar some specific exceptions like the bludrocs where we've been able to benefit from them after substantial investment of time and management."

"... Well, I wouldn't go that far." Mickey couldn't help but add on. "Making new friends and learning new things... I think those are pretty positive."

"I don't disagree, but the new friends we've made have all come from outside this world as well." The only native beings here were either cannibal apes or untrustworthy gods -- definitely not much of a recommendation.

"But it's because they're from outside that I've learned new things." Mickey held up his hand, recalling his first magical lesson. "Without that, I would've never learned magic."

[greatcleavage]

"I'm impressed someone found the time to teach you," Roy said, less cynically than might normally have been the case. "But still, you're making my point. Nothing from this world has been very good to us."

"But it's the fact that this world exists that people who could teach me were brought to me! Without this world, I wouldn't have known that magic existed at all." And, as a bit of an afterthought, "Plus, you're all teaching me other things, like to see things less black'n'white. Wouldn't have done that without this place either."

"I'm not saying you shouldn't learn new things, or that it's bad that you have," Roy said. "But none of us would be available to teach you any of these things if we hadn't been taken away from our home worlds."

Mickey would have continued the argument further, when his big black ears heard a most unusual noise. He stopped, raising an eyebrow, a hand to his ear.

"... Did you hear that?"

[greatcleavage]

"No, I failed my Listen check," Roy said, without missing a beat. "What was it?"

"That's just it - I have no idea. I've never heard anythin' like it before." Which probably didn't mean anything good.

[greatcleavage]

"Then we'd better be on our guard." Roy drew his sword swiftly, though he didn't yet lift it to a ready position as he turned to scan the area.

Mickey also took his out, trying to hear it again. "... It's almost like a bird's cry, but... wrong, somehow. I can't put my finger on it."

"'Wrong somehow' is pretty much par for the course." Roy turned slowly, putting his back to Mickey so they could both scan half the horizon, looking for the source of the noise.

Mickey went quiet so he could hear better. Silently, he waved with one hand - it was near that hill, but maybe if they didn't make a noise, they could take a look without being spotted themselves.

Boy, it was making one weird-looking shadow.

Well, if Roy were certain of one thing, it was that he wanted to be between Mickey and a hostile creature. So he began quickly shuffling over, despite the sand threatening to suck in his his boots at every step, trying to get into position before anything could go wrong.

When they finally got a look at the thing... Mickey was clueless. He'd never seen a jellyfish before, so he couldn't even hazard a guess.

Instead, he looked at Roy with raised eyebrows. Something he's familiar with, maybe, like one of those weird mimics?

Roy met him with a shrug in turn -- then pointed to himself, the creature, then flapped his fingers like a mouth. He favored diplomacy where possible as a rule, but wasn't just going to go about it without a little heads-up to Mickey.

Diplomacy is the best! Yes, let's try that for once! Talk before violence!

So Mickey does his best to straighten up first, in order to make a good first impression. Smooths down his clothes, adjusts his hat, tries to hide the sword...

Roy had significantly fewer concerns about hiding his weapon -- in part because weapons were understood and expected where he came from, and in part because hiding a weapon as long as he was tall was absolutely impossible. But he did brush some sand off of his armor, before mounting the dune fully.

"Excuse me, good morning --"

Roy didn't get any farther than that before the nihilego pounced at him.

"ROY!" Maybe if it wasn't for the "good" part of the island amping up his "better" qualities, he would've whipped out his sword and gone to town on this beast. But they weren't, so it did, and Mickey now threw himself between the two, hoping to take the attack meant for his friend.

"Damn it!" In the same instant, Roy jumped both backwards and sideways, the better to put himself between Mickey and the creature. Which meant that the two of them promptly crashed into each other, sending Roy practically tumbling over the mouse thanks to Mickey's smaller size.

Down went Mickey, a little dizzy from the collision. "S-sorry about that..." But there's no time for humility! He scrambles to grab his sword. "I don't think this gunna be our friend!"

"Why can't diplomacy ever be an option?" Roy groused, as he surged back to his feat -- cracking his head straight into the side of the nihilego as it tried to lunge down at him. "Ow! Why did that hurt so much? It's flying! Why is physics ALSO never an option?!"

Unwittingly, Roy had managed to knock the creature back a few feet.

Just because diplomacy didn't work here didn't mean it couldn't work somewhere else - but this was not the time or place to discuss such things. "You sent it back!" Mickey announced, on his feet and holding out his sword. "Are you injured?" If so, they'd have to fight another day - it was far more important to retreat and treat any wounds.
