[closed] the scenic route
Who: Sachiko, The Batter, Maka, and Terra.
What: A search request spanning several unmarked islands.
When: Starting the 12th of November. Your tree won't be haunted for two whole days!
Where: Along the coast dictated in 'what'.
Warnings: Violence at most.
Sachiko stands at the verge of uncharted territory, her knapsack on her shoulders and her gaze following the part she couldn't fly past but walk by, easily. Uncharted territory? Or a place that just cared about her not cheating. Either way, she glances back at the other people with her. Her expression... rather blank. Her knapsack is puffed up with the blanket Mickey gave her, but she isn't bringing it for herself.
She wasn't hungry. At most, she craved Muffet's cookies like an addiction to a taste she didn't get to have anymore.
"You're all ready? Who knows when we'll get out... but I hate the idea of farming. I'd rather be a carnivore."
Quietly, Sachiko takes her first steps into the uncharted territory, letting herself be followed or get outpaced by the actual adults. And here, she's tempted to make her first prank. Some of the trees they pass by have rouge markings on them, not bloody. Paint. Too saturated against the bark to be blood. But when you pass them, they all line up perfectly...

Standing at the woods at the perfect time, you could see the bright red kanji for Death painted at just the right angle to be seen betwixt the trees that made it up.

"I don't think I'd be very good at farming, but it's not something I'd be against trying. Still.. I'd rather search out here than stay behind." Let the people who know what they're doing, do what they do best, and Terra was kind of curious about the areas they were heading into.
She kept her attention on their surroundings, pausing briefly at the symbol -- now her mind had to be playing tricks on her. She shook her head a little, glancing away at the others in their party.
no subject
This act was just because she was bored. She wasn't about to allow people to treat her like a child just because they were going away for a few days investigating. The Batter would find out she doesn't need to sleep. So what? She can spin a good enough lie before that comes to pass.
no subject
Sachiko had a point however. Food and water were required to survive on this island and waiting for a garden to take root could take more time then what some had. Something a bit more active suited him just fine.
But in the meantime the man just walks in silence, seemingly straight up ignoring the symbols. If they become important later then so be it. For now they didn't matter. Sorry Sachiko.
no subject
She nods affirmation when Sachiko speaks. While it will be nice to have crops eventually, that's not an option yet, and they have to survive now.
no subject
And being that none of them were reacting to the symbols... yeah, must be her tired mind playing tricks on her. There was nothing there at all, surely. She shifted her grip on her backpack, not sure how long their expedition was going to take, but hoping she had brought enough to last the time. She paced her steps not far from Sachiko though - Sachi was but a wee child who needed to be protected~!
no subject
She glances towards the Batter, a little more serious and too quiet for their companions to hear..
"How are you on food and water? ... I mean, do you need them?" Because Sachiko didn't, and was going to refuse every portion sent her way. "To make things less annoying, say you gave me a snack or a drink earlier when it comes to meals. I don't need to eat."
no subject
But then Sachiko moves closer to him, but thankfully doesn't take hold of his sleeve again. The Batter still couldn't tell exactly what she was beyond an almost instinctive urge to not allow her to touch him - although that wasn't quite exclusive to Sachiko.
"I do." Despite what the girl saw, the Batter still functioned like a human. Food and water were necessary for him to keep going. "Fine."
Although he does note down that Sachiko doesn't apparently need to eat. One more odd thing about her to add to the list.

I am Maka Albarn. It's very nice to meet all of you!
She presents the board to the group with a smile. But at the same time, the whole process of pulling it out and writing means that she's not going to be excessively chatty this trip. She has to keep her hands free for her staff and the knife hidden in the pocket of her hoodie.
no subject
In any case, it was nice to have names, even if
BatmanBatter's silence was kind of unnerving. "Batter.. it's nice to meet you." Sachiko seemed to know Batter well, so she figured he'd look out for her. Glancing at Maka next, she binked in a surprise, "Oh - you.. can't speak either..?" So that's two people she knew of that didn't so far. Such a varied group of people on these islands! She smiled to Maka anyway, "Nice to meet you too." She had cute handwriting!Introductions out of the way now, expedition hoooooo!
H1
But she really will wear herself out at this pace, and she doesn't want to show off her teleporting to anything she can see right away. So she marches past the man who already said no and to the strongest person on their team. Maka.
"Would you carry me on your back for a little bit?"
For someone of Maka's strength, a flimsy 7 year old who's even lighter than her peers would feel like lifting a bag of grapes, but it's up to her whether she wants to do it or not. She rustles in her bag and pulls out a very long and sharp set of scissors.
"I'll trade for a while. You fight, right?"
no subject
Thankfully they had water. But drinking it all right now would be a determent. So he'll hold off on asking for any.
Instead he continues to survey the landscape and the group itself. If Sachiko isn't being subtle about handing Maka a ridiculously sharp set of scissors, then he'll note it down. Otherwise he'll stay silent.
Guess someone isn't much of a talker, hun?
sorry, i've been sick!
Scissors are sharp, and Maka knows that they're a valid weapon form and that some knifemeisters specialize in scissors. But, well, Maka's a scythemeister, which means she's trained for polearms, and while she can stab someone with a knife with a little more skill than someone untrained, scissors aren't her first choice. At least not for fighting.
But it's hot out, and Maka's pretty sure it's always going to stay that way. Her jeans and hoodie aren't right for this climate, and she's going to get heatstroke if she doesn't do something about it. So, with a hand raised in a "wait a moment" sort of gesture, she shrugs off her hoodie (carefully, so nothing falls out of the pocket) and takes the scissors. Two snips leaves her with a sleeveless hoodie and two long tubes of fabric that she shoves into her bag (the sleeves can be turned into bags later, if they need to carry anything). She'll cut the jeans later, she doesn't want to take the time to remove her boots while they're walking.
The hoodie goes back, and the scissors go in the pocket for now, and her backpack gets shifted around to her front. With the sleeves gone, it's even more obvious just how thin Maka is, all sharp bones and wiry muscles. Wherever she's been for the past few years, it hasn't been kind and there's been more fighting than food.
But she's still strong enough to casually carry a little girl on her back, and she helps Sachiko get situated without complaint.
NP, Health first!
Her focus shifted as the terrain grew more steep, and she was more worried about falling down the inclines than conversing with the equally quiet members of the party. It might be difficult for Maka, but the girl seemed pretty tough, if she couldn't manage to piggyback someone up steep inclines in the path with as hot as it was getting, she'd put Sachiko down, she'd bet. So instead she moved past Batter to take the front of the line and get a look at their surroundings (and also catch her breath some. She did pass a glance towards Batter as she did, however, offering only the minimum of questions. It was too hot to talk blarh.) "Managing okay..?"
I1 - Beginning to Bug Me 1/2
Aside from the humidity around all of them, Sachiko might as well be a coldpack on Maka's back-- at the very least, helping with the conditions around them. She eventually bugs her to get down, and onward they continue. She now feels like she can fly again, but obviously, in front of everyone, she won't.
Then it appears. The Ovosoid. As big as a small child, huh? Once Sachiko recognizes the wriggling mass in its belly, telltale of insect pregnancy (what? Did you think the maggots in Tenjin appeared from nowhere?), it sees her. And it zooms towards her, perhaps seeking out the easiest target.
It stops mid air. Wings not even beating. Sachiko holding up her arm.
2/2
... She didn't think... to pretend to cry for help. She simply wouldn't have in any other situation, so she didn't. Sachiko is only a great actor as far as horror movies go, not survivalist movies.
But it seems more are being drawn out by the sound of her arrival.
Roll initiative, everyone.no subject
And then the telltale sign of a battle begins and the Batter is moving forward. However--
...however, Sachiko gets there first. The creature slams into the tree, splattering it like the bug it was. The sound reminded him of the Postal Office and the sound of stamps thudding against paper like a clock ticking over and over, a beat to a very old drum. There was very little left.
She could defend herself. That was good. But he was expecting a reaction. A cry for help. The children here so far were self-sufficient, or at least the ones the Batter had met, but they were not like him.
They were not like...them.
But there's more of those creatures coming and he couldn't focus on figuring out what Sachiko was right now. Raising his bat and scanning the area, the Batter speaks once.
"Get ready."
Here they come.
no subject
That's good, that combined with Sachiko's abilities means that Maka doesn't need to worry about the little girl in this upcoming fight. She spins her staff, readying for the approaching wave of insects. She'll crack as many exoskeletons as she needs to to fight these creatures off.

The vile THINGS that came buzzing out first being dealt with with -mass- prejudice got a surprised stare. That... was not a spell she recognized, but boy was it effective. It didnt' strike her as particularly off about Sachiko not calling for help or shrieking or anything - but once the rest of the flying nasty things came onto the scene, she didn't spent much more time thinking about it.
Battery got a brief nod, and Terra glanced over to Maka just as briefly before turning back to the flying creatures - she didn't want to give them a chance to even get close to her, her hand sweeping through the air, flames springing to her fingertips and palm, then jumping from her hands to engulf each of the Ovoids that tried coming near, letting them explode in flaming balls of ..fire. Gross.

Sachiko felt her persona start to ebb and flake like a temporary tattoo. Taking her pair of scissors, she stabs the thing and brings it up to face level, observing it through the sunlight. She recognizes that kind of mouth-- What do you think maggots are, and why are there so many in Tenjin as the cleanup crew? She smiles despite herself, before grabbing both handles of the scissors and ripping the blade wide open, tearing the egg apart.
"Flesh eaters? Probably... It'd be a random act of kindness to kill them all, but we're not here to do that."
She just wants to continue.

Fire and weapons and shear determination. It was hard to beat a combination that never stopped working.
The Batter gives his bat a hard flick - although to Sachiko or anyone else that could see his monstrous form it looks like his claws are covered in grime - before slowly shifting out of feel of battle.
Purification complete.
He looks over at everyone else to see what state they were in. He has healing skills but the Batter will have to be directly asked for them to be used. Otherwise he's ready to get going.
body horror party aw yeah
She was distracted, and while that didn't hamper her ability to beat the bugs to death with her staff, it did lower her defenses. She rolls up her jeans to inspect her leg, looking to see if there's any sign of the sting. There, on her left shin right above the top of her boots, a red mark. It throbs, burning in a way that makes her concerned about poison.
But it's not poison, it's... it's... fuck it's raised and throbbing and there's something under her skin it's under her skin and wriggling. For a second, Maka is frozen in panic, staring at the injury and remembering spreading vines instead. Then, she grabs in her pocket for her knife and slashes at the raised spot with frantic movements.
TRAUMA FOR EVERYONE
Batter was fine, Sachiko was fine. Maka was f.................not fine. Terra's blue eyes widen at the injury, "Oh no.. Maka." DUDE be careful with that slashing or you're gonna cripple yourself. Sachiko is probably closer, but Terra starts over towards Maka as well - once that injury was clear of gross infestations, she'll get ready to heal it up because magic is GOOD and not evil and she's just trying to help ;.;
TW FOR REALLY GROSS
Sachiko, with her scissors, was wearing a placid smile and keeping a calm voice. "Batter, clamp your hands over where the parasitic lump is on either side to prevent it from moving. I'll handle the rest."
When that's done, Sachiko takes a very nurse-like approach to the lump, even as it bleeds. "Shallow cuts like this are never deep enough to get the job done. We have to do something to keep this from getting infected, after."
Sachiko found it-- the head of the grub. Pinching it into place, she digs one half of her scissors in the other side of the parasite, and opens the wound just a bit. She withdraws the scissors, this time putting both in and stretching it over the grub. Snip, snip, snip, snip! In that small incision, Sachiko was dissecting it within her skin, knowing a full gash could kill her here, as far away as they were from the mana pools. "Just beneath the epidermis, no veins in the way... perfect." It had stopped wriggling by now, obviously dead, aside from the terrible pain the Meister must be in. Never you fear. In one solid motion, Sachiko shoves the remains of the parasite out through her small gouge, and goes back once with her scissors to get its head.
"Ah~ ah! You've been like a perfect patient. But the infection can surely kill you if these things are highly bacterial, so you must let one of these two use their healing magic. Ƴᗝᑌ ᗰᎥǤᕼ丅 ᗪᎥᗴ Ꭵᖴ ᑎᗝ丅."
What happened to her voice there, at the end? Oh well-- Batter, Terra, take it away.

Enough more on edge that when Terra tries to cast a healing spell, Maka reacts instinctively. Her soul flares, bright and angel-winged to anyone with a sixth sense and sparking with her anti-magic wavelength. To Terra, it might feel like a burst of static electricity, not enough to harm the esper but enough to sting as Maka cancels out the magic with the innate power of her soul. Casting Cure isn't going to work on this one.
no subject
She raised her hands, the gentle energy gathering and then wafting over to go over Maka's injury and -- "??-" She snaps her hands back to her chest in surprise at the stinging sensation of the magic being cancelled, and her reassuring expression changes to one of confusion, "Wha... why?" Why won't Maka let her heal her..?
no subject
Yet another thing to talk to the Storyteller about.
But when Terra moves in to heal Maka and fails, the Batter figures something was up. Either those creatures disabled Terra's magic, something else was doing it or Maka herself was responsible. Either way, they were being held up.
The Batter removed one hand from her leg, perhaps because he didn't really need to keep it there anymore. Looking at his face isn't going to clue anyone in as he pulls out a pure white ticket with the word 'Luck' stamped on it in black. Slapping it against the girl's leg, it begins to take effect almost immediately.
If Maka wants to cancel this, she'd better make it quick. Otherwise it will heal her. Luck Tickets were created to be used in combat after all.

Not that it matters. Sachiko doesn't sleep, but she has to be the voice of reason in agreement with all of theirs. She hands something to Maka's good arm whether or not Batter's healing goes well or not. It's a bag of mixed nuts, one of her boons in her knapsack when she arrived. She doesn't say anything about them but insinuates that she eats. Protein is important and Sachiko was much less picky where she got hers.
"Isn't that better? We still have a long ways to go, so let's keep it up!"

A sound soul dwells in a sound mind and a sound body. She takes a deep breath, closes her eyes for a moment and centers her soul. Then she rolls down her jeans and nods. Let's go. Let's go and let's not think about that again.
no subject
.. at least Batter's trick worked, but Terra gave Maka a confused look all the same, before she straightened, folding her hands in front of her again. "At least... it will be a little cooler when the sun goes down." She hopes. Maybe. But that's the only thing she says for a long while, deeply disturbed by the rejection and turning her attention to keeping an eye out for enemies instead as she followed after the group.
I3 1/2
It's not hard to get a fire started, though they only debatably need one in this weather. Sachiko takes the folded blanket out of her bag and passes it to Maka or Terra, whoever seems to need it more to sleep comfortably. She casts a side glance to the Batter, puts her hands on her hips, and bravely announces.
"Berries have juice in them! Finding some should keep us hydrated. I'll be right back! I think I know what to look for!"
And off into the forest she goes.
CW: animal cruelty, snakes that were made up for this game [whited out text to select]
She's gone for a long time. Snakes don't have a lot of blood in their body, and the more she kills, the more hide and seek she has to play. But eventually, she has a thick bouquet of grasstails and a perfectly red dress.
She'll let it dry, come back, cutting the snakes open and cooking them with a stick.
"We can't turn down any meat at all, I think."
no subject
"We can't."
He knew the human body could last without food longer then it could water, which is something they have covered right now. Provided the heat doesn't demolish their supply, that is. But one does need food eventually and you can't live off of plants forever.
So snakes. Better then nothing.
no subject
But then Sachiko comes back with food, and she has Maka's full attention. The girl doesn't make a move towards the snakes, but she's watching Sachiko's movements with a hungry interest.
no subject
When Sachiko returns with snakemeat, Terra glances up, staring at her first blankly. Was her dress always THAT red..? "..thank you." Tough little girl... violent little girl too, and that was unsettling.
Actually, with the exception of Maka, both of the people she was partying with were unsettling sumbiches. Maka wasn't unsettling, unless you counted her odd distrust. But she wasn't going to get any decent amount of sleep, which is why she offers first, "... I can take first watch." She didn't think any of them wanted to take the chance of things sneaking up on them in the night.
no subject
"We learned this for Girl Scouts..." Sachiko stuck her tongue out in disgust. "About surviving in the wild. Snakes definitely aren't recommended, but this one is non venemous. I uh... can tell."
She's been bit, but seems okay.
She passes a snake to everyone and holds it over the fire. It burns away the grass right away, leaving the exposed scales to burn off and a tender strip of flesh to remain on the stick-- but too long and it'd fall apart in the fire, or taste charred and burned. Once she's got the balance right (there's plenty to make mistakes with), she eats a couple of them. Very vegetation-y, but not a bad aftertaste. Good with butter, if they had any.
After she finishes, she goes to get her blanket and sprawls it out far away from a tree, on a nice patch of grass. She doesn't take up much room underneath it, so two more can follow.
"If the next place we go is even worse, get your sleep in, 'kay?" She mocked a yawn and rolled over. A seven year old would be tired, right?
no subject
It takes a bit for him to find the balance between tasty and burnt to all hell, but find it he does. Still the Batter doesn't have to eat much - despite his size to the two who could see his other form - so he won't go through too many. Once that's done, the Batter will find a patch of dirt that's a little farther away from the fire. The heat was enough to keep him warm throughout the night and he had long sleeves. He should be fine. And the dirt was always comfortable.
"I will go next." The Batter didn't sleep as much as he probably should so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise to see him awake later in the evening. Just wake him up if you get sleepy Terra. Otherwise good-night.
no subject
She isn't going to share space with anyone else, for their own safety. If she has a nightmare anyone sleeping near her might wind up hurt, so she finds somewhere where she can have her own space.
After the Batter speaks, Maka holds up three fingers. She'll take whatever of the night is left after Terra and the Batter finish their shifts.
