Ruins Mingle Log!
Who: Newt Geiszler
ohnehalfte and EVERYONE
What: So a bunch of people headed up towards the ruins, so they've got to all run into each other and start to congregate, right???
When: Evening of the mingle log and onwardish.
Where: The Ruins
Warnings: Um...same as the mingle log?

The beach curves up a gentle slope until it meets forest, some manner of building visible through the trees. Further exploration of this area will reveal a dilapidated building of sorts; the architecture is indiscernible to even the most skilled eye. Despite looking as if it has seen better days, there are areas that offer some form of shelter...and who knows what else. Just because it appears uninhabited doesn’t mean you won’t wind up pleasantly, or unpleasantly, surprised.
[ooc: Hey y'all! I thought this might be a good place to start getting larger groups of characters together to do some exploring, settling down, banding together and figuring out rations, etc. Feel free to throw up any threads of your own for specific things like exploration groups, a gathering in the entrance hall, whatever strikes your fancy or that you think your character would organize. Have a party!
Edit: Additionally, there is now an OOC Post for those that want to handwave their character signing up for ruin exploration]

[That's a completely reassuring thing to hear from someone who seems to be taking on some authority around here.]
Are you throwing any volunteer into this sort of mission, or are you going to vet people to make sure you're sending in people who can handle themselves?

APOLOGIES FOR HOW LATE THIS IS
"How these places work"? What's that supposed to mean?
[He speaks with the tone of a man with experience of odd situations like this. But his logic, no matter how potentially morally grey it is, is sound. Shepard lets out a huff of breath.]
That's certainly a point.
[However it further solidifies that this man doesn't have a solid plan so her services certainly are needed.]
All right. Has any reconnaissance been done on these ruins or are we going in blind?
DON'T EVEN WORRY ABT IT BB
Pretty much going in blind at this point. I've checked out this main entrance area, but that's about.
[and as for those earlier questions...Newt rubs at the back of his neck] And as for what "how these places work" means, it means I've been through this pulled-to-another-world-without-consent schtick before.
u r so good 2 me
She doesn't look satisfied with that answer but it's expected. It's not like she has the entire might of the Alliance military at her back that could send out some scouts first before sending her and others in to investigate. Though perhaps that is more of an optimistic thought of her people than they quite rightly deserve due to their track record.]
Well. I suppose there's nothing to it other than making sure something of value is found and that everyone going in comes back in one piece.
[Shepard, personally, has an amazing track record in that department. Uh. Other than the aforementioned fact in that first bit of narration but that was a bit of a fluke and out of her hands. Really.
She looks at Newt incredulously.]
Ok, hold up. I've had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this might be a different plane of existence entirely. But you're telling me that this has happened to you before?
[And she thought her luck was bad...]
my turn to be super late lol
it's all good! time is meaningless and we're all here for a good time
[Wow Shepard, that's so kind and sympathetic of you to say...]
Has there been any similarities between the places you've been taken to? Any pattern that could help establish why this has happened to you so often?
no subject
though, so at least I know I'm not the only target.
As for similarities, though...they all have some sort of person or person that calls themselves some sort of ruler or all-power being. They usually try and provide some measure of care, but usually not much, in exchange for taking whatever they want, be that feeding off our emotions or using us in experimentation and torture. [he says, casually, folding his arms over his chest] You can't leave, because whoever it is that's keeping you there, they don't want you to leave, so you need to try and figure out why they're keeping you there and how. There's also always some kind of what I call "death rule." [he makes air quotes with his fingers] If you die, it's not permanent, though how long you stay dead varies.
One way or another, the basis is that you've been dragged here by whoever it is and they want you here for some reason without asking your opinion or giving you a by-your-leave, because honestly they don't care. You're nothing but either a food source or some sort of creature for experimentation. You have to keep an eye out and take care of yourself because they're sure not going to do it, and they'll happily squash you like a bug if you piss them off.
[he says, like he hasn't mouthed off to multiple of these beings oops]
no subject
That death rule though...]
And here I thought being brought back from the dead was a rare thing to happen.
[To Shepard's knowledge, only two people in history have ever successfully pulled that off, and one of them is technically debatable. The other is currently pretty sure she's dead again anyway.]
It sounds like you've got a firm grasp of all of this then. Do you have any plans to investigate this place further to try and find out what is happening in this new death trap?
no subject
[at that question, though, Newt folds his arms over his chest, considering] At this point, the only plan I've got is to figure out who here is willing to explore this place and, depending on how many people volunteer, split up into groups to check the place. Unfortunately, as far as I know, we don't have any sort of other communication network, so we're stuck with this sort of 'hope everyone's in the same place and shout a lot' kinda thing.
no subject
Oof. Sorry to hear that you've died that much. I know that sort of thing isn't pleasant. It's too bad we won't know which is which in probability until someone kicks it.
[It's too much of a risk to test so Shepard plans on making sure everyone stays alive for as long as humanely possible.]
We're going old school here. Playing telephone only we don't have any cans to talk through. I wish I had some of my tech from back home; that omni-tool would be real useful right now...
[So would her armor or weapons but the lack of communication between these groups is the greater danger right now.]
no subject
I mean, I've got some of my tools from the last place I was, though whatever dumped us here took all my spare generator parts. [he looks particularly displeased about that] And my tech's been spotty at best. I'm hoping some of it will come back after it dries out some more, but...yeah. The lack of tech and ability to communicate here sucks a lot.
no subject
It leaves us vulnerable. We won't know if half the people on this island are in danger until we're in the danger ourselves.
[God, that generator would have been amazing.]
If we don't find any more technology, eventually we'll have to set up some kind of communication system though it probably will have to be more primitive than what either of us are used to.
[It sounds like he's got technology that is at least in the same family of the stuff she's used to.]
no subject
no subject
I agree. It does. But it's doable.
[She looks around to the greater ruins around the two of them and then back to Newt.]
I should go. When we get more solid groups for exploration I'll be there.
