[ A more inquisitive person might prod at those gaps in the narrative. Might notice them, period. C.T. could probably rip Wash's story to pieces in an instant. But Maine? Maine's never been big on digging for the why.

He knows who he is. He knows his purpose. For Maine, that's enough.

So he accepts the information at face value. Trusts that Wash is telling him the truth. And when he hums a wordless—

"Downgrade."

— he sounds about as sympathetic as he gets.

The A.I. may be an invisible part of their team that Maine has never even spoken to, but he's still important. Still someone Maine knows he needs to protect. And the Freelancer can't think of a bigger downgrade than being reduced to a simulation trooper. ]
