[ In retrospect, Maine realizes that he should've picked up on that. Wash used past tense: "she was"; "she knew." But Maine didn't notice. And now it seems he's kicked a sore spot.

The big Freelancer doesn't apologize in so many words. But he shifts his weight and grunts a wordless, "My bad." Acknowledging the error as his. Then, aloud: ]
