January Intro: It Grips Me

INTRO LOG: JANUARY
Who: New arrivals, and you!
What: New souls arrive to the archipelago of LifeAftr
When: January 5th and onward
Where: All over Ensō
Warnings: Mark as needed!

Shores of Ensō: The Sun's a Harsh Reminder Why
As dawn arrives - and with it, new adventurers to Ensō's shores. It appears the Storyteller is not about to allow a repeat of last month. The ever watchful pages that have guarded the shorelines the month prior now begin to move closer inland, circling the landscape in closing, careful arcs. To the particularly astute, their purpose may quickly become clear. Anything foreign to Ensō's natural ecosystem will be met initially with wary hovering, ruffled pages flocking to nearby trees and wheeling overhead. Now and again, a particularly brave little page will swoop down to tap against the top of an unsuspecting entity.

Foreign entities, in this instance, just so happen to include...well, all of you. These partially sentient notes can be found flitting across the entirety of Ensō and the neighboring housing islets, intent on surveying every little nook and cranny of the tropical landscape. While they may little more than a vague irritant, their attitude towards a person they’re surveying can absolutely get worse, depending on the response they receive.
Though responses may vary (and creativity, encouraged), the pages are looking for indications of anything that is not only out of the ordinary, but also that which is acting suspicious. Unfortunately, they're not quite experienced in determining what does and does not count as a genuine threat, and thus they might very well interpret even the smallest signs of surprise, anxiety, and (justified) irritation as signs of hostility.

Unfortunately, their response to this is likely to be just as unpleasant as it is abrupt. Those of you who protest a little too vigorously may find yourselves abruptly doused with a viscous black ink - a marker to return and inspect you again in future. Where more aggressive behavior is…noted, you may very well find yourself swept up in a tornado of angry paperwork, only to be abruptly (and not at all comfortably) deposited at the Storyteller's temple. A very weary Storyteller will do their best to apologize as they slowly smooth out the kinks in this new security system.

But surely you agree, dear adventurer, that this sort of security system is indeed necessary.

Ensō, Inland: Who Knows Where Our Limits Lie
Unsuspecting adventurers aren't the only creatures the pages seem intent on harassing, it seems. Across Ensō, the activity of the native fauna will become much more apparent as creatures are driven from their usual haunts by invading paper. From the smallest of snaplings to herds of cariborn, it will take some time for the wildlife to settle down as many disturbed creatures will find themselves displaced miles away from their natural homes, seemingly at random. Unfortunately, this also includes the creatures most would prefer not to have on the move.
For the unappraised, Ensō happens to play host to a particularly horrifying brand of wildlife known only as the fustercluck: a large swath of appropriated limbs with katamari-like qualities, if katamaris were more well known for digesting the majority of their victims and using what little remained (usually the hands and feet) to propel themselves towards their next meal.

Despite Ensō being home to two such creatures, very little has been discovered about them, aside from how unfortunately indestructible they seem to be. Magic, guns, bombs - name your poison, and a fustercluck will most certainly be impervious to it, including poison itself. Should you be unlucky enough to wander into the path of a fustercluck, your best option is to run - or lend the fustercluck a hand.

And another hand. And your entire body, since you offered so nicely.

The fusterclucks have a more directed path than most creatures - they can be found moving up and down the rows of G and H until January 10th, when they appear to settle down...unless they're diverted elsewhere first.

All new arrivals will awake with knapsacks, their names stitched to the front. The contents of said knapsacks can all be found in your acceptance notices!

As a final note to those who participated in the Test Drive Meme, bear in mind that those threads, if all parties involved would like, can be game canon in the form of dream-like memories involving a place very much like this one, though the layout is considerably different.

Feeling a tad adrift? Make sure to check the Locations Page, which has details regarding the starting areas and a handy map for those who feel better with a bird's eye view!

Both! Though I think it may be a little less helpful for humans in particular...I know it cannot help with your types of illness.

[He seems uncomfortable for a second, but pushes past it. We don't need to dwell on that now.]

But I have seen it work on injuries for nearly any species! Is healing yourself and healing someone else so different, for your type of magic? For us, it is only a matter of direction.
ideismo: (08. Give me time; I will be clear)

[personal profile] ideismo 2019-01-14 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[...Ah. Don't worry, he can read a room and he isn't going to ask.]

I wouldn't say it's completely different, but it does require different incantations and knowledge for it to work properly. That, and perhaps an innate talent for it that I don't happen to have.

[It doesn't sound like it bothers him any, it is what it is. Some people are just good at that stuff, some people aren't, some people manage to heal for a pathetic amount but damn if they don't keep trying it anyway.]
timaeus_testified: (Well)

[personal profile] timaeus_testified 2019-01-14 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
[This is pretty much the most normal thing he's dealt with since he got here. He goes with it. There's not much else he can do and as odd as the troll being cooler than the present temp is, he has bigger worries.

He lets himself be lead, while his mind races with all that he's seen and what vague dream-like recollections he has.

Where the hell is Dave and Terezi?]

[personal profile] ratsinadaze 2019-01-14 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oof, thanks.

[Gobbet would normally bristle at someone just grabbing her like that, but honestly she can recognize when she's in no position to argue, and the temple floor is not exactly comfortable anyway. She brushes some of the dirt and ink from her front and briefly pats her pockets to confirm that her rats are there and breathing. Neither of them seem to be in the mood to come out after that ride, but Yasha might notice the squirming beneath the fabric as they check themselves over for damage.]

Yeah, I'm getting that impression. [Her lip curls as one of them flutters past on it's way to harass someone else.] What are these things, anyway?
ratsinadaze: (Default)

[personal profile] ratsinadaze 2019-01-14 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.

[For what it's worth, if she knew, she might apologize. Might. Even Gobbet can recognize when she's overreacted and even if she won't necessarily feel bad, she might own up to it. Especially if she simply doesn't remember the circumstances that lead up to it.

Her attention briefly turns to the sky, where pages flutter on a non-existent breeze, then back to Tim.]

You look like you've been here a while. [Got that 'God I'm tired of being stuck on a bizzaro island' vibe going for him.] People come and go like that a lot?
ratsinadaze: (Default)

[personal profile] ratsinadaze 2019-01-14 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Anything dry and absorbent is fair game.

[Gobbet takes the hand she's offered and drags herself to her feet. She looks pretty tired of this whole island adventure already, to be honest. A brief pocket check confirms her rats survived the fall, but they don't seem to want to come out after that wild ride. Really, who could blame them? Still, the squirming fabric might be a bit weird if Barry notices that.

She picks a black tank top off the top of the pile to try and work the ink off her face. This way she can keep it and the stains won't be so obvious.]

This place always this annoying?
lightlessfuture: (embedded in a song, both kind and cruel) (både vänlig och grym)

[personal profile] lightlessfuture 2019-01-14 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
They're more than smart enough to recognise the change in demeanor and link it to what they've just displayed. Rather than respond in kind, they tuck the weapon away in one smooth motion, sheathing it into its proper place on their back with the ease of long practice.

[Weapon is necessary to protect self.]

Whether they like them or not is left unanswered. What does it mean to like their weapon, anyway? They themselves are a weapon, in some ways, and the nail is an extension of them. Cutting into the world around them, shaping it differently. That's all it is.

[Sorry

For discomfort.]
flower_of_innocence: (tune pt 2)

[personal profile] flower_of_innocence 2019-01-14 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, of course...you've got your hands full today, don't you?

[She imagines new arrivals must be draining for them, in some ways, even without having to manage a brand new security system. Which. She's eyeing incredulously at the moment. So much paper. She wonders how many times Ren has tried to catch them to draw on them...]

postictal: (hundred yard stare)

[personal profile] postictal 2019-01-14 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda, yeah.

[An answer to both questions. He scratches at the scruff that's begun to accumulate at the lower part of his face. He keeps forgetting to shave. It's hard to stay on top of a thing like that when everything else is...]

[It's a low priority, is all.]

Over a year, now. Sometimes you see familiar faces coming and going.
flower_of_innocence: (nodnod)

[personal profile] flower_of_innocence 2019-01-14 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Usually, yes.

[She nods confidently. Lillie has yet to hear of something taking place on Mu that all involved parties didn't remember, so they must be true enough.]

They're not proper dreams, really...they take place on an island called "Mu". It's a bit like a world in between the one you came from and this one, I think.
ladytakamaki: (skin to skin)

[personal profile] ladytakamaki 2019-01-14 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you got it! On both accounts. You can use them to recharge things, too. Cool, right?

[ she momentarily glances at his arm. ] Actually, I have a friend who uses it for the same reason. Not sure how to use it to recharge stuff, but...maybe just dunk it in?
sideswitch: (acxa 12)

[personal profile] sideswitch 2019-01-14 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ her grip is tighter, considering this is alfor. acxa feels like this is truly the least she can do for everything she's done, for her contributions in lotor's conquest which ultimately hurt alfor's people. she still hasn't said a word about what the future holds for him, and she doesn't think she's really the one who should break it to him. especially since princess allura's here.

so all she can do is this. she brings them behind a tree, out of its path. she's silent for a moment, waiting for it to slither past them...and it seems to stay in that one particular area of the island. duly noted.

she turns to alfor, gun still at her side in case it decides to ambush them again. acxa isn't good with greetings, so she just nods at him. her normally hardened expression softens into something remorseful mixed with relief.
]

It's good to see you again, Alfor.
sideswitch: (acxa 6)

[personal profile] sideswitch 2019-01-14 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ sorry, yasha. if it helps, acxa's got a bunch of streaks on her face, and she looks kind of silly. at least the other woman doesn't seem too upset about it. ]

I must have aggravated it. [ even if she hadn't meant to. she's just not too good with being touched, mostly. ] It was my natural reaction to ward it off, and it seemed to have interpreted that as a threat.
journalname: (🔱 an old friend)

[personal profile] journalname 2019-01-14 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Asgore nods.]

Everyone has their gifts. I have never known of a monster who could master all types of magic. But golly - we do not use incantations at all. How do you discover how to use those?
wanderingdoctorfaust: A mugshot of Faust, showing his 'head' and his suit. (faust_mug)

[personal profile] wanderingdoctorfaust 2019-01-14 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Immediately, Faust's guilt usurps his discomfort as Knight's weapon is sheathed. Children are allowed to have interests and shouldn't be shamed for them, even if they can sometimes be a bit dangerous. He really shouldn't be associating human values with this small creature, anyway. It may very well have a good reason to need a weapon.

[I understand. It is no trouble, really.]

He moves his own blade away, out of sight but not out of mind. There's a moment of awkward 'silence' before:

[So! Shall we get going, Knight?]

He hopes his apologetic feelings are properly communicated with the nuances in his signing.
maxout: (014)

[personal profile] maxout 2019-01-15 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
...

[He actually seems to think that over for a bit. But, really, it's not as if talking about it will matter much. Might as well distract himself.

So he crosses his arms, which in this case is a good sign that he's probably not... immediately going to blast anything again.]

Yeah, some crazy goddamn robot kidnapped a whole bunch of us from different universes and shoved us into his little "study", which it turns out was really just an excuse to get us to kill each other. Then the damn thing tried to just kill all of us when we decided not to play.

And that was before the whole building exploded.

[Because of course it did. What mad scientist hideout doesn't have a self destruct option?]
counterblows: (϶ my starlight)

[personal profile] counterblows 2019-01-15 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
[All right. This is better, if marginally. He's not in any danger of blowing anything up at the moment, which Wash is going to tentatively consider a win.]

You've probably figured out that you're somewhere a little bit like that. People from different worlds all piled together.

[Trying for some...validation here. This is very not his area.]

How long were you there, would you say?
alchemisted: (Default)

[personal profile] alchemisted 2019-01-15 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Then, no sadly I'm entirely without explosives.

[The truest tragedy, honestly.] I've arrived without my Lion, and my bayard is distinctly non-combustible.

[So no dice. The lion might've been able to do some damage. But that's not an option.]
alchemisted: (14)

[personal profile] alchemisted 2019-01-15 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
[He won't even comment on the feathers, because if his little girl has decided that this is fashion, who is he to judge anyway? No one that's who.

Besides, he's distracted. It's another of those moments where he finds himself startled by the woman that she's become, how much she's accomplished. He exhales a laugh, nodding.]

Though for your sake, I hope not too alike. [He knows himself. And he thinks Allura is likely brighter.

His expression sobers though, growing serious and he nods.]
I would like to find the edge of what I can do here before I find myself reaching for something beyond what I'm able when I'm in need of it.
alchemisted: (23)

[personal profile] alchemisted 2019-01-15 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Alfor glances back once they're safely tucked away, looking at the monstrosity before settling himself down, out of sigh. But listening. Their only option will be to run, if it comes to it. He doesn't like the idea. The creature should be stopped.

But for now, he offers another smile.]
Likewise. It seems we both woke up from that dream before.

...only to find this nightmare. From what I've heard, they're exceedingly dangerous. And thus far unstoppable.

[Thus far.]
counterblows: (϶ or a fortune for your disaster)

[personal profile] counterblows 2019-01-15 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
You too, then.

[The words are muttered in distinctly puzzled undertone. It's possible he doesn't intend for the words to be heard, but he says them loudly enough:]

How many of you people are there?
alchemisted: (19)

[personal profile] alchemisted 2019-01-15 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Alfor breathes a quiet, sheepish laugh.] I see you've met my daughter and her friends.

[He shakes his head.] Back home... there are five Lions, and each chooses a Paladin. But it would seem this place has a fondness for pulling in mostly my successors. I've met four of them here.
counterblows: (϶ heart beating tonight)

[personal profile] counterblows 2019-01-15 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
[He's heard...kind of? About the Lions, and the bayards, and the tech that Lance refers to as Altean. He's not as lost as he could be, basically.]

Your successors. [He finally registers "my daughter," and stares. Given the similarity between him and Allura - ]

[He doesn't mean to sound as startled as he does when he says it, to his credit.]

How - old are you?
alchemisted: (34)

[personal profile] alchemisted 2019-01-15 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Actually Alfor appreciates the surprise of it, honestly. It's plain in the grin that stretches its way across his features.]

Not quite old enough for my child to be fully grown, if that's the question. Allura is my daughter, but in my own time she's still a little girl, more concerned with picking juniberries than piloting. Whatever brought us to this place seems to have taken me from a time many decaphoebs before the others.

[Too many. He doesn't mention the millennia between him and Allura because that still makes his head (and his heart) hurt considering it.]
counterblows: (϶ of the ivy league)

[personal profile] counterblows 2019-01-15 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Many...sorry. I'm not familiar with that term - decaphoebs?

[Presumably it's equivalent to a lot of time.]

So you're from...way earlier than them. [That is some stunning amounts of temporal displacement, right there. That's not just a few hiccups and inconsistencies, separations by months or weeks. That sounds like it's liable to something closer to years.]
