[There's something familiar in this - his sense of utter serenity as the world threatens to come apart beneath their feet. It's not quite apathy. It's not quite the barrier that he couldn't breach and, for a long time, had no inclination to. It's not the plain inability to care because everything that would allow him to has since been locked somewhere inaccessible to him.]
