I suspect most people have been using the river, although that has its' own share of problems- I once did some unintentional fishing there by trying to wash my shirt and pulling a rather unfortunate little creature out along with it. A decent dinner, at least, but it meant I had to wash that shirt out all over again.

Mmm, casual gardening I've done for quite a while- after all, it's always nice to have some fresh ingredients on hand to do my baking with, not to mention a good way to save money. More serious efforts like this, though, they're new to me. There's rather a large difference between growing your own food by choice and growing it because you need to, it seems. Still, one adapts as one must.
